Virgin Media - great service but they really do test my patience at times. (renewal costs)

I'm currently paying £91 a month for 1gig, Maxit TV & talk weekends landline. I've not tried calling to cancel yet as there is no alternative in my area (LE11), cityfibre have dug up the pavements around my area but not all connected in yet.

Best speed BT/voda can do in my area is 29Mb down 10Mb up.

I don't use the landline and can get all the channels I need through digital aerial, it's just the broadband which Virgin know there is no other option in my area so refuse to discount.

It used to be £76 a month before the price rise and I was forced to take out one of their o2 sims also and I had to cancel my other contract with idmobile which was fortunately on a 1 month rolling contract.

Im on the same but used WhatsApp and phone call to hassle, I had options but not FTTP at the time which I think there is now.

I'm paying £66 with the 02 sim, I will be asking to cancel next time and try for the hard bargain as some people have got some great deals.

We're on a new customer deal with Virgin Media, with 1 gig for £39.99 a month.
I can't remember the term length, but I think it goes up to £60 after that period is up. At which point we'll see what's on offer with the retention team.
Previously on copper wire with Zen Internet, we could manage 3.5 meg, and we were paying £29, so it's been a nice upgrade for us.

I'm on an 18 month contract which ends next April so I guess if I call them today they still won't offer me any cheaper than £91.

Interestingly, the contract is in my wife's name and the direct debit in my name, what's to stop me cancelling my wife's contract and signing up as me?

In April you can do that without a penalty but check the link below or ask what the cancelation payment will be for the remaining 5 months as it still might be worth doing if you become a new customer and get a good deal.

I'm sucking up the extra payment at the moment and hopefully by next April there will be another provider offering 950Mb service in my area so there is some competition. I'm thinking VM know what providers are in my area and the speeds etc and can hold me to ransom over the high cost knowing there is no alternative.

Question here though, when VM installed my fibre cable, it goes up my front garden and around the back of the house into an upper bedroom (office), if I did switch providers to say, Vodafone, would they insist on putting the router in my front lounge? Also the ntlworld.com email address would die I guess after so many months so got to make sure all the email is diverted to another one.

They only offer the best deals
These were the offers i received in July and im fixed now until Dec 2024 on 500mb for £27. I strongly believe there is no pricing structure at all and they just make numbers up.

Surely there's a limit though - sounds like you pushed thme hard!

Maybe, but when money is involved im always happy to push them hard. I've encouraged a few friends to do the same and one dropped his bill from £106 to 63 a month and another form £120 and some change to £71 a month.

I went through Whatapp in August 22. The deal I got was Ultimate Volt package . 1g Broadband, movies, Sport, BT(TNT) and a second box for £28.37 for 18 months. I had to take an O2 contract which was £28 a month but I called them up and got them to reduce it. Thats the first decent deal I have had from Virgin in 20+ years. I think I'm out of it in February unfortunately

you'll get a call within 48-72 hours.... You can refuse first offer if you want and let them come back again - but for simplicity I was happy with first offer (nearly 50% discount on the full price) and happy to get it over and done for another 18 months!!
I got the call around 2 this afternoon. The fella got straight to the point. A little bit of chit chat about the price and he said he could offer me M250 and get rid of the useless landline because I've never actually owned one for £22. Done ... or so I thought. Then he said I will get a £22 credit for this month taking the November bill down to £6 or something like that. I will then start fresh from December on the new contract. I just agreed and said thanks very much!

I was on the call for 8 minutes. So that's me for another 18 months. I'll definitely be canceling next time ;)

Is there an alternative fibre provider in your area?

that was my problem - I don't have anything like M500 in the area, best I have is BT at 40mb etc - They knew that as well on both initial calls. They checked my postcode when I said I was leaving to BT/vodaphone etc

Don't Vodafone have those fancy box thingies now which do fairly well?

Yeah, I am curious about whether Virgin are more competitive on their retention offers in areas where there's a comparable alternative. Here it's 65mb or so or virgin, despite being a relatively densely populated area in a suburb of a major city.

Still, this thread prompted me to notice I was out of contract and send them a cancellation request on WhatsApp. Currently on £62 a month for 1GB. We'll see what happens.

In my case the VM cable was under the front garden and was originally in the front room but years ago I extended it into a back room downstairs. Our new Vodaphone comes overhead from telegraph poles, there was already a defunct BT copper cable from the pole to our house which they replaced with fibre. VM tried to put me off saying I'd have my garden dug up by open reach, LOL. that's only a problem if phones lines in your road are all underground though

The Open Reach installation engineer was in fact quite happy to run the line across the front and down the side of the house into the same room as my PC etc, The line can carry speed up to 950Mb
