Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

i just got 50mb from virgin does that mean they will upgrade me to 100mb if its in my area?

You will be upgraded to 120mbit when your scheduled area upgrade comes around :)

Just had my letter today confirming this. Thank you very much Mr Branson! Can't understand though why anyone would stay/acquire 100meg now given that this is inbound. Unless they can't wait.

I wonder how long after the upgrade it will take VM to put the prices right up....im paying £35 a month for 50mb as it is. :/

I think prices are too high as they are at the moment they should lower them down to get more customers to join.
Im sure a lot of the poorer people in this country cant afford to pay £35 a month and not even £18 for the 10meg connection.:(

Anyone had any signs of an upgrade yet?

I'm supposed to be getting upgraded in March/April and according to the double speeds site i will be one of the first to get the 30 > 60Mb upgrade.

Interestingly this morning i have been moved to yet another UBR.. so they must be up to something.

Provided the price hike keeps them trading in profit and funds network improvemenst I'm not overly bothered. We are in the unfortunate position, unlike some other countries whereby Virgin is a mish mosh of many old networks and has been operating at a loss for a long time.

With regards the speed increase, although I am overjoyed I wish they would increase upload speeds first. 5meg upload on the 50meg service is a complete joke!

Welshdragon I understand that some people may make use of >5Mb upload but the majority of customers simply don't need faster upload speeds (although the number of people uploading is steadily growing thanks to youtube, streaming video sites etc...). I think there should be an option available for those needing more upload speed, I just don't think VM should pay a huge expense to increase it for everyone for free.

I do understand where you are coming from but consider those that use peer to peer. Faster uplaods equals faster downloads in my mind. eg blizzard installer

Backing up a hdd to the cloud becomes much less painful and and actual reality

Playing games online would surely benefit all round?

I agree downloading is the priority but when you think about it surely better uploads has a beneficial impact on the downloads?

quote from vm:

Does everyone get their speed doubled?

All existing customers will get a broadband boost, and in most cases you’ll get double your current speed. 20Mb customers are getting their speeds tripled, while 100Mb are getting an increase to 120Mb – the fastest broadband widely available in the UK.

How are my speeds changing?

This table shows you what speed you’ll be getting. If you’re not sure which package you’re on, check your bill or log into My Virgin Media.

I knew it,Got a letter yesturday morning saying from April they are increasing the bill by £2.25 a month...

I know £2.25 isnt really breaking the bank,But its not just that...they have not even implemented the upgrade yet and they are already putting up the price so when its been implemented and we are all getting our "Free" upgrade...i bet it wont be long after they put it up again.

Im paying £35 a month as it is just for 50mb internet,I bet if i went to a competitor i could get a decent 24mb package and TV for maybe less.:(

Of course it wont be as fast connection,But really thinking...do i need anything more than 20-24mb unlimited?..thats already quite a decent speed.

Agreed, it is a little bit cheeky. I know they can do whatever they want in the terms of the contract, but it doesn't sit very well with me. We aren't getting the upgrade til next year!

i've had no letter yet saying about they are increasing the internet price.

maybe only people with just the internet will get this increase and people with internet/phone/tv won't get this increase?

the only letter i got is about the Call charges going up...

tbh everything is going up, not just VM prices.

I noticed the last couple of days that my upload speed has increased to 5Mbps :D Was uploading a YouTube vid I had done and noticed it was peaking at over 600KB/s and I was thinking "umm what? when did this happen?"

Of course, I also noticed my IP address had changed from a 91.x.x.x to 82.x.x.x. So maybe that's the indication?

Anyway, just waiting for the 100Mbps upgrade and then we're sweet :D Apparently I won't get mine til July but that's ok :)

Not sure about double it, last few weeks in my area, can't get more than a meg.

Over 10 years around here with ntl/virg, never a problem.... rural village.

Last few months in truth it's been on/off doing it... was thinking about upgrading and paying virgin some more... gone soft on the idea:/
