Virgin Media increasing broadband speeds by 20 - 200% starting February

Hello, I am looking forward to my upgrade to 69mbs :O, but I currently use a normal virgin media router, I looked up the model and found "The Hub (with stand fitted) – combined up to 20Mbps DOCSIS 2.0 wireless cable gateway" does that mean that I will need to buy a new superhub at some point or I wonder if virgin will send new ones out...

They've said people who need it will recieve free equipment.

Some people may need a new modem to make the most of the upgraded broadband speeds. If you're one of them we'll be in touch, so keep your eyes peeled for letters and emails from us.

You'll need a DOCSIS 3.0 Superhub.....which is a piece of ****.....get a decent router (I have an Asus) and put the Superhub into modem mode as soon as you get it....as a wireless router the superhub is really bad.

I have never understood, why people want such fast upload speeds? I very rarely need to upload data.

Example:
So that annoying flat mate can seed torrents (they seed for increased download speeds from the torrent), but because of the higher upload speeds, they can do it without hindering every body else's connection speed.

The main one that comes to my mind is uploading photographs and home movies to sites like Flickr and YouTube. Especially now with the prevalence of HD recording functionality being built into smartphones and compact cameras, the resulting file sizes are only ever going to increase.

I for one look forward to finally getting my 5mbps upload in April much more than the arrival of 100mbps in my area.

That's it for me. I tried to upload my full family pictures folder (202gb) up to V-Stuff and it estimated 43 days and then throttled me for using VMs own servers..

Even BT are capable of 15mb up in some areas..

Well he could continue to upload and utilise all of the available upload bandwidth, but he could cap it and still get comfortable download speeds which he wasn't able to get before. Also, I don't use torrents, but I remember reading something which said some torrent hosters (something like that) may limit the download speed of some peers if all they're doing is leeching.

VM work on a 10:1 speed scale now, so when they double the download speeds the upload speeds will double as well. Its already been confirmed.

That is good to hear! If only they'd hurry up with my upload upgrade!

Indeed, when you are downloading you should at least be seeding at a semi decent speed though, unless you plan to seed at a later date to a decent ratio. I don't really use torrents very much anymore because people who don't seed ruin it for the rest of us. Most of my bandwidth usage is thanks to Steam sales! lol :o

Ah, well I despise Torrents so upload doesn't really bother me.

I'm on VM 100mb service, no idea what the upload speed is, nor do I care to be honest. I don't upload enough to warrant needing faster.

I do upload photo's to the net, but as its a small file it takes seconds, even on just a 1mb upload service.

Nothing wrong with torrents, just the content they often supply. UKNova is about the only site I use these days for torrents.

But yes unless you are uploading large files like videos to You Tube or you do a lot of FTP work then upload isn't really worth worrying about above 1Mb.
