get yourself a 3rd party download manager that supports resume.... :p

i use net transport. handy for snaffling lots of stuff (this is a link to a slightly older freeware version. you have to pay for the current version :p).

Cheers for that, Installed now. ;)
I was having problems with Leechget, removed now tho.

All the links are now dead from the MS site, any mirrors anyone? :(

The memory manager has actually been improved - it uses all memory available. On a 512Mb RAM machine, it will use near as damn it all 512. On 2Gb, it will use nearly all 2Gb. This is the way Linux & other OS's all use memory.

Yes but that causes any games you play to go to the pagefile and kinda makes them unplayable, I tried loading up fear as a test and at about 75% loaded it just stopped and the hdd just constantly stayed on. I had to end the task.

Btw does anyone know how to stop that pop up which asks for confirmation on everything you do?

msconfig>tools tab>disable uap>reboot

you still get prompted lots for stuff but this does help make it a bit more usable.... :)

does anyone else download a 13.7mb corrupt iso when they click on the x64 download link, ive tried clearing my cache and refreshing the page but it still downloads the same file

Yep, the links from MS screw up for me too. Both say 14 Meg whether I download with the browser or a 3rd party app. (NTL user if it makes any difference).

I'm getting my ISO's from the FTP that JonRohan kindly set up :)

Well i started downloading Vista, got to 70% and suddenly realised i really couldn't bothered. My system is running perfectly on XP at the moment and i don't want to spend my entire Saturday messing around with partitions and dual boot's just for a prettier desktop. Its not like DX10 is out or Crysis/Halo 3/Flight Sim X.

i had a feeling it may of been NTL messing me about again any chance of a link to the ftp please? Email in trust if he doesnt want it posting on the forum

think iv given up now, tried downloading the 64bit one about 10 times now, does the full download then says the file is corrupt (using firefox download manager )

Think it would be a tight sqeeze on my poor 34gig raptor boot drive anyway, i would have to duel boot as I dont want to mess up my current system.

Good excuse to buy a bigger raptor though :D

anyone got any new current links for the 64bit ISO,

Yeah its pretty much useless atm, its much slower than xp, loads of software wont work on it, there are loads of driver problems and it uses stupid amounts of memory.

On the contrary, I've been using it for the last two weeks. I've noticed no real difference in speed between Vista and XP, all of the software I want/need to use works fine and all my hardware is supported.

Then again, I'm not a gamer.

No; for you this is the case... A lot of people are finding Vista to work well/better than XP. Remember also that it's still a beta and best used on a separate machine to your main rig if possible.

Energize if you don't like it then just uninstall it and wait for the final release. I don't think you quite understand the concept of beta software :p

The memory usage is a non issue. Free memory is wasted memory. There are two reasons for this in Vista, 1) the memory manager has been significantly improved for workstation usage 2) the "desktop compositor" component of the new graphical subsystems stores each and every window in graphics and system memory meaning no unnecessary repainting is required.

I never understood why people like to have free memory. Whats the point? Its like having a Ferrari and only ever going 30 mph.

If you manage to solve this I'd love to know how. I've had Beta2 for a week now through the MSDN account at work and I've tried everything I can to get either the 32 or 64 version to install on this machine.

I either get the message you have there or when it Copies the files and reboots I then get "DISK BOOT FAILURE - INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"...it shouldn't be the drive as it's a IDE (so not drivers) and it holds a XP build fine and has no corruption via scandisk.

I've tried three different DVD's, burnt at the slowest speed. I've even tried mounting the ISO with Daemon Tools but still have problems. I'm now re-downloading the ISO's just incase I've got a corrupt one (although I doubt it as the 32bit one I have installs fine on my Dell SX280 at work).

Just to see if there is a pattern, I'm using a ASUS A8NSLI Premium with a AMD64 San Diego 3700+

I am using the exact same motherboard & also installing it on a IDE drive, I have been reading around the web and a few other people also have the same problem, I now have the x64 version downloaded and will try that later today.

I found this on another website, but can't see in the BIOS any mention of Native/Compatibility mode

I recieved this message before. It wasnt the DVDs fault at all though. It
turned out that If you have a Motherboard with SATA + PATA drives, and you
have Native Mode selected in the BIOS (Not the compatibility mode) your
install will fail. How come, I couldnt tell you.
This is the case atleast for me with build 5308.

I perfectly understand the concept of a beta, I was agreeing with the other person that there wasnt really much point in using it at the moment. After all we are allowed an opinion of the operating system. Though its impossible to play games when windows is using 700mb of memory, free memory is fast memory.
