post edit: anyone know of a decent alternative to Daemon tools which just doesn't want to install?

Have you tried x64 version of Deamon tools? I've downloaded but yet to try it.

I've installed the X64 Creative drivers and can now see my card and all the options but still no sound.

Realplayer? why would you want it :p

Because there are quite a few files I need to view from time to time that are only available in that format - I don't have anything particular against the format either, for web streaming video it seems as good as anything and the player isn't any more intrusive than lots of others anymore. Perhaps there's some alternative that I could use, but given that Vista ran pretty sluggishly on this system (only 512MB RAM) I'm happier with XP.

Can i just install this as an upgrade over my XP Home install, or has it got to be a clean install?

Also, i don't have any DVD's so how do i go about installing vista?
:)

Tried downloading it yesterday evening, server was too busy and simply wouldn't give me the page with download info.

This morning it was much quieter (got up at 6:30 so I'm guessing most of the USA was still asleep - downloads would either have finished or not been started). Anyway the first few times it was still too busy but a few refreshes later I got the link. Was saturating my connection (2mbps) so I think the waiting for a slot was worth it.

I used DownThemAll (Firefox plugin) as my downloader, was working fine. However I've been at school all day since. Judging from the bandwidth graphs on my site it's all done and downloaded nicely, so should be trying it out this evening

How do people reckon it will run on my main rig:

P4 Prescott 3.0 (skt478)
512mB DDR
9800 Pro (128mb)
IC7 Max-3 (if it makes any difference with drive support)

Reckon I can run Aero? /Hopes...

Ok i'm about to install it but before I do I have a few questions about drivers.
I have a DFI Ultra-D motherboard, what drivers will I need to use?
Also I can't seem to find any vista drivers on the Linksys website for my USB network adaptor. I found drivers for my X1900XT & X-Fi but if these will work correctly is another matter.

Wish i saw this earlier, ms dl is too busy so I'm gettign through bittorent but I'm with pipex and the bittorent network is capped.

You should just need the beta NF4 drivers from the Nvidia site. Works absolutely fine on my Ultra-D.

Out of interest why did you go for x86 and not 64?

Simply because I thought there would be greater driver support for Vista x86.

I didn't want to try Vista x64, find it flakey and not know if it was down to Vista or lacks of drivers.

(if that makes sense)

finally got it running, dual booting with XP + x64 vista. seems really nice so far, very pretty indeed. going to go and hunt for some drivers now...this should be fun sigh...tried a couple of games from my XP partition, they all seem to work fine, WoW doesnt seem to want to let me chose any refresh rate other than 60hz though, but that might be to do with that im still using the windows nvidia drivers :)

I decided to just order one of their English DVD packs for about £13 inc. VAT. Had the same problem with the Windows XP beta release and decided it was quicker just to order the CD/DVD. :)

Dunno why you're all moaning about Creative cards - my X-Fi works fine with the drivers on the Creative site, 32bit.

anyone got a link to some working updated 64bit nvidia drivers? the ms ones work ok, but when i put the newer ones from the nvidia site on it wont let me use 1024x768 @ 32bit colour, only lets me chose 16bit, which is crap because the glass theme only works in 32bit mode  audigy 2 is no worky, the drivers from creative didnt seem to do anything except make vista take x3 as long to start...
