how do you get the x64 version? I've just gone through all microsoft's hoops, and the only links it's giving me is to the English, German and Japanese x86 version

*edit*
ignore this - i clicked the english x86 link, which then gave me the choice of x86 or x64.
Well done microsoft. Top notch.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change security settings

Creative's drivers are apparently dodgy.

Can't. Not DirectX 10, is it?

I'm using the lastest Vista x86 X-Fi and Forceware drivers. Everything else was done automatically.

Just installed the x64 Edition.

Have to say looks really nice. Been using it for about an hour now, and slowly making it look like Windows XP Home ;)

Had to install Firefox as IE 7 was pretty slow.

I know its beta but I finding it quite slow. Im using a 160Gb Maxtor Hard drive and find its disk swapping quite a bit. I left Windows XP Home on my raptor. Although the longer Im using Vista, the faster it seems to be getting.

Im sitting on the desktop with Firefox & Messenger open and its using 1139mb's of RAM. Although I think thats with everything turned on.

Well, I've downloaded the x86 version. It started to install then stopped saying there was something wrong with the system image (well, think thats what it said).
Is there some kind of media check facility on windows disks or did I just dream that?

I had the exactly the same as you. I left it downloading last night and burnt it this morning and got the same message. It means the CD is corrupt, Normally if its had problems during the download. :( Only way is to re-downloading it.

I don't understand how you lot have such massive amounts of Memory being used... Mine's using 513MB of RAM, with Trillian, Firefox, uTorrent, and WinAmp open... How do you lot have so much RAM in usage?

I've got 2GB of RAM, and Windows sees it as there, so yeah..?

:D

I'm posting this from Vista. Got home from school, burned to DVD, freed up space on main hard drive, shrunk partition, loaded Vista install, file copying was done in about 20 minutes, then I left it finishing the rest of the install while having my tea. The only questions I had to answer during the install were to do with location and keyboard layout.

Booted into the newly installed setup. Drivers. Downloaded the ATI Catalysts for Vista, Realtek Audio drivers for Vista and that was all I needed; it had detected and setup everything else perfectly. That's pretty much it so far, very painless and the OS itself is very nice. Considering the age of my rig that I'm running it on, I'm also pleasantly surprised with how well it runs (PC specs on link from sig).

That's about it for now. I'm going to try and see what programs do and don't run on it later, but I won't be doing any further experimentation after tonight - need to revise for exams this weekend.

A happy null :)

Got the 32 bit version running on my Shuttle on a spare partition and posting from it now. Only 512Mb so that might be why things feel a bit sluggish. All hardware detected otherwise.

For some reason I don't get the aero/glass transparencies. I have an Nvidia 6200 which is supposed to support all Vista features and I did download the new driver for Beta 2. Perhaps aero isn't supported yet ?

I will now try installing on my beefier PC and see if aero works on that and if 2GB helps out.

I haven't had the chance to install this yet (need to install another hard disk but I don't have any cables handy at the moment) but does the aero theme work? This is basically the main reason I want to give it a try. Will aero (in the final version) only work on DX10 cards? Or does it just need DX10 installed but is backwards compatible with DX9 cards?

Installed Vista fine although it kept throwing an error message when I tryed to install my ADSL internal modem (Sar Solwise). Another thing it couldn't install was my motherboard drivers an error popped up "Wrong Operating System". I am now back on Windows XP.

If anyone wants the DVD I'm in South Wales, Caerphilly. You're welcome to pick it up if you can't download it.

one way round a lot of problems (especially hardware) is to install vista in a virtual machine. vmware server and microsoft virtual server are both free now and offer a great way of testing vista. 2 obvious disadvantages -

no aero glass
no games

but all other apps should run fine in a virtual machine. try it and see. :)
