Hello mate,

How strange, mines been using 800mb once booted up :S which version are you using? 32bit or 64bit?

Michael

32bit

Still stumped. I've got Aero Glass on and all, full eye candy.

Dunno why you're all moaning about Creative cards - my X-Fi works fine with the drivers on the Creative site, 32bit.

Because we cant get our creative cards to work just like 90% of people?

It's things like transparent window titles, flip-3D (Windows key+Tab) and a few other effects.
Just tried that, pretty cool :). Though it looks like the Window edges could do with some antialiasing here.

I installed Steam earlier. Rather than redownloading all my game cache files of course I tried to copy them from the Steam install on my XP partition. However I faced a very odd problem. Navigating to the SteamApps folder, the contents showed up as completely empty and file size reported as empty. Odd. I decided to see if this was happening in XP (was almost sure it wouldn't be since I hadn't done anything to the partition or folder). This was the first time I booted back into XP so was apprehensive, fearing I would have the problem that other's described with it messing XP up. No such problem :D It was still working perfectly. Vista shows up to XP as drive G, while XP shows up to Vista as drive D. Nice.

Once in XP my suspicion was confirmed, the gcfs were still there. Rather than messing around trying to fix it in Vista I just copied the files over to Vista's Steam install from in XP. Rebooted back into Vista, signed on to Steam, loaded up HL2 and started playing, everything worked perfectly. Performace wise, the framerates I was getting were pretty much identical to in XP.

However, one thing of interest, is that as many people have already noticed, it does use a lot of memory:

(Click for full size)

As you can see that was with HL2 still open and minimised though so considering that it's not too bad added with the fact I only have 512mB of RAM.

edit - realised that XP isn't that far behind when in similar situations, but there you go a screeny anyway :p

:)

Another thing I've noticed. The sound panel is pretty different:

Instead of giving the old style sliders for each channel/input, it just gives you sliders controlling the level from each app you have open, though I had more than HL2 + WMP open so it knows which ones use sound and which don't.

Right I'll shut up now before I annoy someone with random postings, it's just, well... it's all shiny and new :o

Anyone managed to get MSN Messenger working on x64?

It installs for me (using latest version downloaded from the website) with no problems and then when I click "Sign In", it just won't and times out with an error code saying that theres a problem with my internet connection or the service is down.

I can sign in using web messenger fine, and when I test my connection it says it can connect to the messenger servers ok. Any ideas as its annoying the hell out of me!?

Are you using windows live messenger? Aka msn messenger 8 beta?

Trying to install Vista x64 but it doesn't seem to like my multiple SATA drives or the Sil3114 RAID controller on the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. I've got 2 x 74gb Raptors in RAID 0 and 2 x 160gb WD in a second RAID 0. My plan was to leave XP on drive 1 (the 2 raptors) and install on drive 2 (the 2 WD)

I get to the bit where I need to add my sata drivers from floppy and it just will not see either drive :( I've tried the latest XP/2000/2003 64-bit drivers from Asus and Sil with no luck.

I think I might try breaking up the RAID to see if it will even see individual drives, if not I might just give up till some better drivers come out. Unless some of you very clever people on here can suggest anything :)

Nah, just the regular messenger (v 7.5). Just to say as well that I'm using Windows Firewall and MSN Messenger is unblocked, NOD32 as antivirus and my router is a Netgear DG834G (if that is of any consequence).

You probably have to use msn 8 beta for windows vista. Since its the new style of msn programs and had been renamed to windows live.

Has anyone tried running any of the built-in games? When I open Solitaire or Minesweeper, the playing area is just solid black

Ive tried playing some of my normal games, complete failure, then again with windows using all my ram I don't expect any better.

one way round a lot of problems (especially hardware) is to install vista in a virtual machine. vmware server and microsoft virtual server are both free now and offer a great way of testing vista. 2 obvious disadvantages -

no aero glass
no games

but all other apps should run fine in a virtual machine. try it and see. :)

How much memory have you allocated to your Vista VM?

Ok, tried it and still the same with Messenger Live...just will not log in.

Here's the error box that pops up. Has anyone got any version of MSN messenger working on x64? Or can someone try please! :)

Well left it downloading yesterday morning before I went bed, and after I got in from work burnt it and installed it on my other drive.

First impressions are good so far. The installation went without a hitch and the drivers installed OK, (apart from my printer which I didn't think would be supported anyway). It didn't find the audio drivers for my Creative SB Live! at first, but when I opened up the Windows update window they were listed in there. So I installed these with no problems and sound works fine after restarting.

Will probably try some games later today, but so far so good. :D

Well this is my third download attempt of vista, wish me luck its currently at 98% ;) Cheers for the link to the ftp mate, if this fails I shall hop onboard :)

My 2nd download attempt... and I'm on 576k :( so it's painful.

Thanks to the guy who provided FTP download, I would host it on my server if I was able to, but I don't think I'll be able to >.<

Hopefully I'll be playing on it tommorow - I might make a video or something for everyone who can't install it/download it :)

Well, I've downloaded the x86 version. It started to install then stopped saying there was something wrong with the system image (well, think thats what it said).

Just had another go and it was fine this time :D I like the option to install Sata drivers from a USB pen or CD means there really is no need for a floppy drive anymore.
