VM 20 > 30 meg upgrade

Indeed I have electrical tape on mine, however it needs moving as the lights still flash through the vents. I'd rather not cover them up! ;)

Why nearly all electronic makers think super bright flashy LEDs are a good thing, especially on something that is generally designed to be turned on 24/7 is beyond me...

Depending on the lights, though, it can look cool :p

My GS108 switch and WNDR3700 sitting flat next to each other looks damn cool :D

Just need to spray the 108 black at some point.

Come on now, the lights aren't that bright! My PC case power LED is brighter and doesn't intrude in my room under darkness as much as to cause me sleep issues let alone when watching a movie or something :p

Well after a week with the superhub, I've ended up having to change my network setup to get some of my things working again :(

I've found that forwarding port's just appears to be broken with this setup.

Previously I had Tomato setup with remote configuration so that I could log into the router from work and use the wake on lan feature to wake up a PC and then remote desktop to it. I had a DNS forwarder setup on my domain name that pointed to the routers WAN ip addy so I had a nice simple web address to remember rather than an ip address.

With the DMZ trick I can't access the config page of the second router while outside the LAN, I also couldn't access my Subsonic music streaming service that again uses the DNS forwarder on my domain (this also uses a specific port).

So now I'm basically using the Superhub as my main modem and router with the few ports I need open so I can use use 90% of the things I used previously. Annoyingly I still can't access the config page of Tomato remotely even though it's connected as a simple switch now which means still no WoL. I was hoping that I could simply forward a port to it's IP and access it that way as if I was on the LAN but that doesn't work :( I may as well just take the WRT54GL out of the network completely as it literally has no use currently which is a shame as it's so much better than the Superhub even if it only has 100mb LAN ports and 54G wireless

Roll on the proper modem only patch!

Oh and as has allready been stated, I also phoned VM to see if I could get one of the modems that was good for upto 100meg but they just flat out refused and said I'm only allowed a Superhub unless I downgraded back to 20meg and they'd reactivate my old modem.

Hmmm, I use dyndns for dns forwarding and have no issues RDPing in and accessing the router/lan machines. The hub isn't filtering anything if the dmz has been set up right and all hub features disabled so it's just acting as a modem so everything should be exactly as before?

I disabled everything on the superhub originally, upnp, firewall etc and just used the DMZ to pass through everything to the WRT54GL. I also added a rule to always give Tomato the same IP based on it's Mac addy. I then updated my DNS forwarder with the new WAN ip that the superhub gets but I couldn't connect to the remote config page of the tomato router, my subsonic music streaming service or remote desktop.

As an example: going to http://some.ip.here:5476 would usually go to the tomato remote config page. the DNS forwarder would just replace the some.ip.here bit and become link.mywebpage.com (http://link.mywebpage.com:5476)

With the superhub in place and the DMZ setup, both the above links sent me to a 404 webpage (this is using the new wan IP the superhub gets and also after updating the DNS forwarder with the new IP)

I read it as you have to pay £30 activation fee to upgrade now, but if they make any plans to uplift users to 30mb automatically, then it will be free of charge.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but VM are releasing a superhub firmware update in May that will allow it to be used in conjunction with your own router (they call it bridge mode):

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5...erhub-Firmware-Update-Bridge-Mode/td-p/341483.

Granted there is a workaround anyway, but some might be encouraged that they won't always have to use it.

Well that is good news, just hope it is early May as that is still some way off!

Hi guys,
Called up today and I've got a free upgrade to 30Mb. VM said it will be on its way. How long will it take to turn up? Next day? Also, is it something that the customer can setup because the woman said an engineer would have to come out :S

Mine took one week. Most regions are self install but not all. Not sure as to the reason, it's literally a case of unscrewing the cable from the old modem and screwing it back into the new one. Difficulty of installation will not be the reason for them not allowing a self install, though the engineer visit should be free anyway.

I've just set it up, websites are definitely noticeably snappier. Very happy so far, just need to get it to play with my WRT54GL now.

Edit: just trying to set up port forwarding and it only lets you forward a given port to one local IP .
