He's not talking about handling surely he's talking about how quick it is around a track. Surely its perfectly possible for a car with poor handling to be quicker around a track than another car with fantastic handling?

I mean that on similar power output cars (as we are talking about in this thread) 'handling', or should I say corner speed is what decides.

We are not talking about a 800hp straightline rocket versus a 100hp MX5

Corner speed and handling are different things, but I think this is what your trying to say by putting the 'handling' in quotes..

EVO magazine has an article on the greatest drivers cars this month:

ITR at 22nd, Elise S1 1.8 at 19th, Exige mk1 at 36th. The VX220 is down at 87th, S2000s dont even come in the top 100.

In the Top ten though they do have 2 FF cars. THe R26R(5th) and Clio Trophy(7th).

does it state their time around the evo track? surely that would be quite indicative too?

there snothing inherrantly wrong with FWD...there are just issues with putting too much power through the front wheels..

for instance say you had a 150 bhp car...if it was FWD it would have less transmission loss than if it was RWD, so it would have more available WHP.

given an exactly matching suspension setup in both cars and identical weight/stiffness the lap times around a track would surely be very similar?

Ergo, the difference between FWD and RWD is infact the way they are able to 'handle' power output increases...

Do touring cars use FF or FR? It's all about weight and balance which is why mid engined cars are inherintly good on a track - the clue is in the name, all of the weight is in the middle of the car! Also the R26R is designed for the track, it has scaffolding in it, uses semi slick tires, has plastic windows, no radio and huge bucket seats. They're probably rated as 'fun' in Evo because most people who buy the magazine couldn't drive an Elise to its real potential, let alone an Exige Cup or something like a Noble.

FWD is not fun if you have ANY driving skill whatsoever.

A Zonda F came top ;) Now last time I checked that wasnt an easy car to drive fast, neither was the Ferrari F50

Interesting that they put the ITR below the Clio Trophy, when in the Greated FWD cars they chose the ITR over the Trophy for the number 1 slot.

Ahahaha....Oh wait, you're being serious?

"When trying to define great handling, it is up to the individual whether it is present or not"

Steve Sutcliffe in this weeks Autocar. He goes on to say..

"Is a good steering system merely one that's accurate and allows you to place the car's inside front tyre precisely where you want to in a corner? If so, a Honda S2000 has good steering, which is patently and obviously not the case"

"Perhaps the best way to determine whether a car has great handling is to time it around a circuit and introduce some genuine objectivity to the debate. Except that this rarely works very well either. Just because one car is faster than another around a circuit doesn't mean it has better handling; it just means it's faster"

I take snippets but I think he sums it up well following this weeks 'Best Handling Car 2009' test.

1: Lotus Evora (By a mile!)
2: Aston V12 Vantage
3: 997 GT3 Mk2
4: GT-R
5= Audi R8 V10
5= Clio 200 Cup
7= Focus RS
7= Lambo Murci SV
9 Jaguar XFR
10 Porsche Panamera 4S
11 370Z

Handling is all about feel, said it loads of times and is a subjective thing in many ways. It seems Sutters is on the same page...

You Sir, are talking bum gravy.

im not doubting that a clio cup is a good handling car...but being really objective i dont see it being better than a Lotus Elise (or similar)...

in a similar way, the new focus is good at handling but top gear showed that the megane outdid it..?

Megane handles better than the Focus.

That would be why :p
