Warhammer 40k book recommendations

Saying it's well established is like saying Darth Vader being Luke's father is well established...it's still a spoiler to someone who hasn't seen Star Wars.

I never thought I'd have to explain spoiler, it's not even opinion, it's a fact.

Ah I suppose that's nice.

I was always a nosey **** :p I didn't know why Magnus turned nor the fine details about Alpharius but the rest I knew :p

Usually I'm the same but from out of nowhere I've found some willpower and refusing to read up although it is getting more and more tempting as I have realised in the past few months that this series is going to drag on until the 31st Millennium!

It always turns into squeaky bum time when a primarch faces another primarch or when a main 'goody' character fights a 'baddy' character :p

Sigh, your comprehension skills seem to be a tad lacking, but read these two posts...

Yep, it's the backbone of the WH40K universe, the 'lore' has been around for over 20 years hasn't it? It was always referenced in the old 40K novels.

It's not a spoiler.

Here's a good one, the Heresy era takes place in the 30th Millenium. 10000 years later you have what is considered the present timeline. Just about everyone from the heresy period is dead.

Even that is well established.'

Every event is pre-established they are just tickling the details, in a very long drawn out way :p

I hope that once you mull these details over in your head a light bulb will suddenly flicker into life.

This is a general Warhammer 40k book thread, NOT a Horus Heresy only thread, and as such I don't think your lack of basic understanding of the lore foundation that the Emperor is dead and exists as a corpse on the Golden Throne should ruin everyones elses ability to discuss the universe in all the other myriad of books that exist (which far outnumber the Horus heresy by the way). It is assumed by Games Workshop and the writers that if you are reading the HH series you already have a basic understanding of the lore... if you don't or refuse to read up on that foundation lore for the next 2 or 3 years that the Horus Heresy books will inevitably drag on for that is not my fault, but you are completely ruining your enjoyment of the books and universe by doing so, as the lore and a greater understanding of the universe only server to enrich and highlight the awesomeness of it, as any fan will tell you.

If you want a completely lore-free thread so that you can stay blinkered, then please feel start your own pure Horus Heresy thread where you and a few others can ignore the common knowledge lore and pretend that it doesn't exist. :)

Just finished Pariah.

It's a good read, if a little over-descriptive in places. Would definitely recommend reading the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies first though. Was fun trying to pick out old characters from physical descriptions alone :D.

No its like saying Darth Vader is Lukes Father to someone who has watched Episodes 4 5 and 6 and is watching episodes 1 2 or 3 in a thread dedicated to Star Wars as a whole.

I couldn't have phrased it better, you win the internets for today.

Want to read this but can't/wont part with the money for a hardback, hopefully paperback wont be too long! :)

Are Eisenhorn + Ravenor featured much in Pariah? Can spoiler tag the reply if you want.

Also, has anyone got/read Angel Exterminatus? Looking at the ebook price which is £12, just wondering what makes it more expensive compared to other ebooks?
-Ah, apparently it contains illustrations...

I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Abnett had a lot of work to do with this one, setting up a new point of view character (back to first person perspective for this trilogy). I mentioned the over-description, it's like he sometimes gets lost in describing a room or a place. Abnett is a pretty descriptive writer but he does go a bit overboard in places this time.

Eisenhorn and Ravenor don't feature much in this book, though they do turn up (I mistook Eisenhorn for Harlon Nayl before Bequin sees his leg braces). They seem to be dead set against each other at this point, whether that will change later in the trilogy though is anybody's guess.

Just finished Shadows of Treachery.

Few bits of **** in it but overall it was really good. Especially enjoyed Prince of Crows, Sevatar was a great character.

First short story collection I have enjoyed :)

I'm now up to "Straight Silver" in the Gaunts Ghosts series, the last couple aren't as exciting as the first couple but still a good read. Also becoming very fond of the words: "Feth" and "Gak" as swearie replacements at work too, hah.

Finished Brotherhood of the Storm yesterday.

I thought it was well written, and actually got me interested in a chapter I had no previous interest in.

There are a couple of lines which you may instantly pick up on and think 'now THAT'S interesting....'

My girlfriend bought me the first 3 GG omnibus's. now there's a bloody lot of reading there.

Stick with it. I found it not at the same standard around that point in the series, but then it picks up again in the next few books.

I'm about a third of the way through "Salvations Reach" at the moment.

Well, in the last few weeks i've been completely demolishing the Gaunts Ghosts servies and am now reading "Only In Death". There have been a couple of books that seem like fillers, but on the whole it's been a great read with some very memorable characters. :)

Suprising good, isn't it! I didn't really get on with the first couple of books, but quickly got sucked in to this little nook of 40k. Necropolis is a belter of a war story and Sabbat Martyr and Only in Death are pretty compelling tales too.

I would like to reread the first omnibus and see if I can get in to it, second time around, but my copy is currently stuck in storage.
