Warhammer 40k book recommendations

Most of their stuff is £20+

Complete *******

They'll stop mass paperback or try to enforce high prices at some point soon is my guess.

Just saw some reviews on Betrayer completely hammering it as well, not massively keen now and the criticisms sound something like what I would say :p

Edit: they will say ******* anything to get your money!

"Whilst mass market paperbacks are mostly disappearing from shelves..."

Are they **** you lying ********! God they make my blood boil!

It's good to see that GW **** off other people just as much as they **** me off :p

You can order Angel Exterminatus and Betrayer from Amazon for £9 each instead of £13 that BL are charging. I'm about to order them as I cannot wait any longer because I'm an impatient git.

Any 40k books worth reading? I think I'm going to get Eisenhorn and Ravenor series. Anything else?

Read the thread... many of the recommendations are already inside and it will only take you 10 or 15 mins to read it and get an idea. Saves us having to retype things. :)

Currently reading through the Grey Knight trilogy, and it's failry poorly written. Ben Counter is a pretty crummy author.

I have just ordered Angel Exterminatus and Betrayer. I'm not entirely happy at paying over £18 for two paperbacks although I did read, they have a flap on the inside cover which extends out so you can see the full artwork on the cover.....

Eisenhorn and Ravenor next and then Gaunt's Ghosts

Been doing that since the start, GW books are nowhere near worth the silly prices they charge.

Indeed.

If they were high quality I wouldn't mind but its generally just Bolter porn with continuity errors and average plotting.

You get the odd good one but they are few and far between.

There are only 3-4 good authors in the entire line-up, that's why. :(

I know everyone circle jerks over Abnett but he's been shown to be a one trick pony with his constant million against one but surprising victory storylines. I can't recall off the top of my head any other storyline from him :p

Dembski seems quite good but time will tell.

The rest are complete gash who drop the odd decent moment per 500 pages. I mean the characters are so wooden you could use them as kindling :(

Yes, but he writes them so well, that's the difference! I would rather read a book with a mediocre storyline by Abnett, who paints a picture vividly with excellent prose, than a convoluted storyline written by some literary muppet like Ben Counter or Gav Thorpe, who for every half-decent book write an absolute Turkey to go with it.

I have honestly enjoyed every Abnett book I have read, even the average ones.

Other good authors I really enjoyed what I read from are:

  • James Swallow
  • Aaron Dembski‑Bowden

But overall it's a shame there are some really rotten apples in the series as a whole.

Pretty harsh stuff on the BL site. 6 months for the 'Legacy Edition'.

Not going to bite and go for the overpriced/clumsy 'trade paper back' either. I have a normal paperback collection to maintain and they take up more than enough space as it is. :D

Guess I'll have to wait for Angel Exterminatus and Betrayer. :(

So today I got Betrayer delivered, even though I cancelled the order a while back.

Do I need to read Angel Exterminatus first? Or can I just dive into Betrayer?

Finished Betrayer, what a book that was! I've always found the World Eaters kind of boring but Dembski Bowden has done wonders with Angron and in particular Kharn.

Jonesiani, it doesn't really matter as there is nothing in common but series order would be Angel Exterminatus first.

Based on recommendations in this thread, went and grabbed the Gaunts ghost series ( Dan Abnett fan from comics)...bloody hell they were good reads...;-)
