Watch Dogs - Ubisoft's Third Person Shooter

I think the towers (Radio towers from Far Cry 3) are similar, puzzle solving to get there, found them slightly more interesting but still quite dull.

There are actually map unlocking towers in this game?

Ubisoft, a company that has over 9000 employees and still uses the same crappy procedure across THREE different games?

How do they even justify that?

I just discovered that there are also glyphs hidden around the city that unlock secret audio logs!:D

You say it is hard, and I kind of agree, as especially in narrative-driven games you have to keep a tight rein on things or the structure of the game will be ruined, but this 'killed by game' mechanic is something I have only noticed creep in to games recently tbh, especially from Ubisoft and Naughty Dog. It was really AC3 then 4 that I began getting annoyed by it, then it even crept in to the Splinter Cell series, which had managed fine without it for long enough. Before this, I am struggling to think of many games that did it really.

For Watch Dogs as an example, I think the third mission, where you are taking a car somewhere and you are trying to evade the cops, if they spot you its game over...I don't understand why you don't get the chance to try and outrun them! And as for the Gang Hideout missions, it is particularly strange imo as they are optional sidequests, where it really doesn't matter in terms of story whether you kill him/fail or not, so there really is no reason to force a particular outcome.

Then let's take your example. My first hideout I tried to sneak in, got spotted and the boss made a run for it. He got away, mission failed. What would you rather happened then? Infinite time to catch him? It would just take all challenge out of the game  Games have always had victory and failure conditions.

They're pretty different in Watch Dogs, they're actually fairly challenging.

'challenging' is not the right word.

If you're talking about the towers you have to physically sneak up to, then they're just really basic puzzles that actually become slightly more time consuming that walking up a tower.

Well there's two types. The areas with enemies, which you have a range of ways to tackle but stealth is pretty tough. Then there are the puzzle ones, which vary in difficulty but are certainly more interesting than the 'climb this tower, click button ones in Far Cry 3 and AC games.

Well, they have swapped the 'climb this tower and press a button' with, press more buttons to unlock the doors so you can then climb up to the top and press a button.

The area's with enemies just require using the camera's to 'hack' in to things and occasionally the manipulation of guards.

I don't really think either are challenging, nor an improvement. It would be challenging if they forced you to use the meh combat system to fight them all :p.

.

I would rather the game just continued. You failed, and he got away. I would probably have it so that he would respawn in the same place in a few in-game days so that you could try and take him out again, I think that would be good, and not too unrealistic, but I would be equally OK with it just disappearing. None of these characters are going to ever turn up again. It doesn't matter what happens to them, you can kill them, knock them out, they can escape, it really doesn't matter. It is the one area of the game where the outcome doesn't matter, yet they seem to want to force an outcome that is essentially meaningless. In the main campaign of course, there will always be characters that you have to keep alive and whatever, but these side missions should basically be a clean slate.

What's wrong with the combat system? If anything that is the easiest option

So having the guy just respawn is fine but having you respawn is bad? What if I've got 1 hideout left to do and every time I fail it I have to wait 2 days for it to respawn. Can you imagine how annoying that would be?

If it just disappeared then it would mean there is some content (equipment/achievements) that can never be unlocked. That is not possible. Equally if any of this side mission stuff just disappeared if you failed then players would get through the content much quicker and complain there isn't enough to do in the game.

This is more like it. On a mission now to sneak in somewhere to interrogate someone, was spotted so I killed the guys who saw me, then after I had interrogated the guy, had the option to sneak back out or kill the rest of them.

This game is really brilliant in parts, but let down by others. I am still overall enjoying it though and don't regret buying it, but then I have been lucky with performance it seems.

I just find the combat very meh. The 'ranks' of guards too can be pretty tough especially given how accurate and quick they are. The convoy missions can be frustrating too.

I also found it pretty poor that enemies spawn on missions, but like, they spawn in a set place regardless of if you're stood there too :p.

It's tough if you try and tank bullets but the covers system is nice and easy to use and the tools at your disposal make it really fun. The convoy missions are tough, I haven't really found a good method for doing the ones where you need to incapacitate a target.

Haven't noticed enemies spawning on me yet, in fact I thought they'd done quite well with that.

Had them spawn in front of me as shooting at advancing enemies and spawn behind me, to the side of me.

The cover system is ok, but it's no better or worse than other similar systems to be honest.

Convoy missions are silly difficult. They need to change the routes depending on how you try and set up traps et cetera, have plenty of opportunity for bad ass moments of springing traps on them.

Just done one of the online missions where you are escaping from the cops and someone else is controlling the traffic lights and helicopter and stuff. Epic!

I still haven't got the hang of the cops in this though. Sometimes it takes me ages to lose them, sometimes a few seconds, and there doesn't seem to be much indication on how long they will look.

Best way to do convoy missions is to blow up the first car that the target isn't in and then go into focus and shoot the driver of the car with the target in it.

Well I found that the easiest after finishing them all.

This game doesn't deserve the 8/10 rating it got. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just a fun (in small doses), average game. It had the potential to be amazing and didn't deliver. I'm glad that I had a free key for it.
