Watch Dogs - Ubisoft's Third Person Shooter

Which game is it similar to?

I assume he is alluding to Demon/Dark Souls with its invasion mechanic.

That I am... it's not exactly the same but the broad idea - "someone else playing their single player game can invade your single player game". Dark Souls and it's sequel have been doing really well lately so it's not surprising a dev with as few fresh ideas as Ubi decided to borrow from it... I guess it's a little bit less lazy than re-hashing your own stuff but only slightly

Gosh, drop in multiplayer? Well I'm glad everyone else knows that they can't 'copy' that. Can you imagine how few games we'd have if devs had your attitude? Co-op multiplayer? can't do that some else thought of that. Team deathmatch? Nope been done already, shucks A mechanic that lets you pick up items that an enemy drops on death? Damn

I think you know that isn't what I was saying, just that it's a similar enough mechanic to think that they may have put it in because it was in another game that did well...

Of course good ideas get re-used, but to follow your over the top knee-jerk reaction to what I said - can you imagine what games would be like if all the major devs just copied the same old safe mechanics time and time again with very little innovation or refinement? (Don't worry you don't need to imagine it, just look all around you)

Well after finally getting it to run smooth and stutter free, maxed out (except high not ultra textures), using my 37 fps "vsync 2" locked method described earlier, I've just played this game for about 3 hours.....

....and I think it's bloody great! I'm loving the atmosphere, and of all the open world games I've played, which is most of them, I think this feels the most alive, realistic and genuine. I've only seen a very small part of the city but the sense of scale, and that all important feel of potential and excitement to see and uncover more, is there.

I also think the graphics, after a spot of SweetFX tweaking for the daytime levels to slightly deepen shadows, contrast, colour and sharpness, are really nice. Almost on a par with GTA4 running Icenhancer's 2.1 enb mod I would say, which if you haven't used, is bloody amazing (v3.0 is out soon too).

Very much looking forward to some patches, hopefully soon, so I can run this at a fully vsync locked 60fps, hopefully with ultra textures and no stutter and unleash the proper power of my Ti's.

If Ubisoft can't pull a fix out of the bag to allow ultra texture use, what do we think the chances are some kindly geek can compress all the ultra textures via some clever prog, similar to one I've used in Skyrim before?

The game modes are entirely different in concept and execution, you suggesting it was 'copied' is frankly stupid. Every single top game builds on previous games in some way. Without it gaming simply couldn't exist. Ubisoft just appears to be the current 'pc gamer hate target' I guess at least people have briefly moved on from EA.

I must say that when I saw that you could be invaded it made me think the same. Playing a single player game and having someone randomly connect to it to wreak havoc is a pretty new concept in gaming (at least from an implemented as a game feature standpoint) as I can't think of any bar DS that does it (you could argue that playing a game like minecraft is single player and someone could randomly connect and grief you but that's not the same thing, though it could be where the idea originally came from).

what did you do to alleviate your stuttering issues if u dont mind me asking?

I'm bored sat in the queue for wildstar I found his post for you.

Right, spent the last 2 days messing around with this game. Until some patches and/ or driver fixes are issued, this is the ONLY way I can get a really smooth, stutter free gaming experience in WD...

(Note - I'm on Nvidia so may not apply for AMD users)

1. Overclock your monitor to 75hz if you can

2. Set "vsync 2" option in the game menu (half refresh rate). I know, but bear with me!....

3. Don't run SLI. It does work, but has the potential to introduce occasional stutter vs using just one card, and the scaling is not currently that beneficial

4. Textures at high. (Ultra not viable on *any* cards even 6GB Titans according to many reports)

5. AA no higher than Temporal SMAA. Again, *seems* to be all about the Vram, though even at high textures I can't run MSAA, just a stuttering mess if do. And, monitoring my Vram usage by testing in certain part of the game over and over with textures on high and MSAA on, it's only at about 2880, well under the 3GB capacity of my card(s), so I don't think it is just a Vram problem.

6. All other settings to the max

7. Window mode - fullscreen (important).

On my system (See sig) gaming at 2560 x 1080 ultra wide, and using just one card, I get a rock solid 37 fps with absolutely no stutter at all.

The extra 7 fps by overclocking my monitor achieves a vsynced (vital for smoothness in this game) 37 fps, which in game actually feels really smooth. V similar/ slightly better to a good PS4 'locked' 30fps gaming feel, like Killzone for example, on a decent TV.

Without overclocking my monitor, only a locked 30 fps can be achieved obviously, but this does feel pretty bad. I know 37 fps isn't a giant leap from 30, but it is noticeably better in game.

There is the unfortunate side effect of more motion blur of course, but you can make yourself feel better and 'pretend' you have motion blur set to on in the game options, or actually enable it if you like that kind of thing ;)

Should also add I'm now running sweetFX too. Only using moderate lumasharpen at the moment, which helps to very subtly 'improve' the look of certain textures ever so slightly, and partly makes up for not using ultra textures. Not got past the first night section yet of the game as not played properly yet (due to all this fannying around), so will no doubt experiment with other settings for the slightly washed out daytime appearance many complain about.

I have a pretty strong sytem, especially GPU wise (SLI 780Ti) so I know it sucks balls to not be able to achieve at least 60fps, but whilst the game is in its current state, this really is the only way I can play it. The variable frame rate spikes and stutter with any other settings just make it unplayable for me unless I do the above.

Not at all bud. See post #1672 earlier (link below) EDIT - or see DAVE's post above :-)

The crux of stutter and this game is all about Vram AND Vsync.

In a nutshell I'm running my monitor overclocked to 75Hz and then running "Vsync 2" in the game settings that is essentially half my refresh rate. So I get a rock solid 37fps vsync'd game, which feels surprisingly smooth.

With my rig I should be able to run 60, which I can a lot of the time, but there are frequent dips into the 40's which creates a juddery feel to the game on top of the slight stutters that are apparent. By locking to 37 fps it negates this issue. 37 fps is not ideal, but it's the best experience I've found at this moment in time.

The weapon toggle bug is starting to drive me insane, trying to holster my weapon to avoid panic and all of a sudden i open fire on the crowd in front of me.

2 questions

1. does this game have controller remapping option?

2. put the bugs to one side has they will get fixed in future patchs, is this game worth buying, at £44.99 for the deluxe version plus Season Pass for £16.99, total £60.98?

I tried V-Sync 2 (30fps) and it was truly awful. The stutter was pretty much gone but it just felt sluggish. I also got this weird drunken mouse effect.

Dropping shadows from Ultra to High did help a bit. I am currently running with V-Sync turned off which actually seems pretty good...

Getting terrible results with my 780ti SC. Max settings 2x TXAA and I am getting frames dropping down to 5 in some areas. I am also getting a lot of objects showing through other things. A lot of road markings, fences and leaves on the ground show through everything and has made the game virtually unplayable.

Here is what I mean

Is the Season Pass worth getting at the mo or is it pretty much wait and see what other DLC is anounced first?

i'd say it's worth it.

The Season Pass includes:
New single-player campaign – Puts you in the role of T-Bone, eccentric hacker and ally to Aiden Pearce

Conspiracy! – a new Digital Trip which sets you on the hunt for cyborgs

The Untouchables Pack – Go oldschool with some classic Chicago mobster film gear including a 1920s mobster outfit and a M1 SMG

Additional single-player missions, outfits and weapons

One week early access to all Watch Dogs DLC
