Weekend Football; 31st -1st - *SPOiLERS*

Ridiculous. Beckham WAS World Class. In the 1999 season there wasn't a player who could touch him. Watch any old United match from that era and you'll see just how many strings Beckham pulled. He created almost every goal for us.

Also, the topic of him always being slow was untrue as was his inability to beat people, he could, but as they say, a pass is quicker than a dribble, and there were no better passers in the game (arguably there still isn't).

Save your energy Nokkon, he was 9 years old when we did the treble which explains a lot. ;)

Just got back from the game; although we only won it right at the death, had it not have been for Alex (who was excellent) we'd have won at a canter, he made some cracking last ditch tackles and blocks. I thought Masch, Alonso and Gerrard were totally dominating the game where as Riera and Kuyt were shockingly poor. It's amazing how Chelsea are where they are considering how bad they are at the moment.

Haven't seen the red card again but at first thought it looked like a foul by Alonso.

Nice to see some real honesty there. Agree with everything, although I think Mascherano had a stinker.
Chelsea lack all form of self confidence, they have no quality out-wide and Essien is like 3 missing players. I would have given Alex Man of the Match but he was stupidly beaten by Torres for that header.

I also agree, it was, if anything a foul by Alonso (as I said above).

Beckham is a lot more reliable at freekicks than Roberto Carlos who somehow managed to live off his goal (in freekick terms - I'm not denying he was a good player) in Le Tournoi for about 10 years. I don't think I've ever seen a player waste as many freekicks as him.

Had my first trip to the Emirates yesterday, not a classic, just another day where dominating possession doesn't equate to points. Most people were baffled at Percy being on the bench for 70mins - I suppose with his injury reckon he does need protecting but when you're desperate for points sometimes you need to take risks. We can't afford to finish outside the top4.

Stadium seemed good, plenty of room inside and comfortable seats, didn't think the support was the greatest though, generally fairly quiet apart from the odd occasion. Different quadrant for the Sunderland match though so will see what it's like in there.

It didn't look anything but a draw until the sending off though.

Certainly seemed like that - I dont think anyone was gonna score and the red did change the result significantly

Saying that, I think this result was the best one for Utd - it keeps someone up their backside, rather than getting a little cavalier we have to continue pushing hard for every win with seemingly another team nearly out of it (losing to both Liverpool and Utd in a matter of weeks will probably dent the player's confidence enough for other bad results to creep in)

Utd and Liverpool will drop more points before May, I just dont think Rafa has the attacking options on the bench to be able to keep all three competitions alive (FA Cup I think will be the first to be squandered, maybe after trying to beat Everton), and it may well be found the squad is spread too thin even for just the CL and EPL

Try RvP :p. I somehow keep thinking of Carlos whenever RvP steps up to spank one in.

Lucky you for going to Ashburton Grove. :) I still have yet to go and am once again finding myself in the situation of attending away matches instead!

Former Wigan Athletic midfield man Wilson Palacios made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur against Bolton Wanderers yesterday but surely he was suspended and therefore ineligible to play.

Palacios picked up his 10th booking of the season in Wigan Athletics game at Eastlands on 17th January and thus instigating an automatic 2 match ban, if he had stayed at the Latics Palacios would have missed the Liverpool game last Wednesday and yesterdays visit to Aston Villa.

He left the Latics on the 21st of January for Spurs, still with a two game suspension hanging over him.

In the time since signing Palacios Spurs have played Burnley away in the Carling Cup, that wont count because Palacios is ineligible having featured for the Latics in that competition, then Spurs faced Manchester United in the FA cup again Palacios had already featured this time he actually played against Spurs.

The next game for Tottenham was the 3-1 home win against Stoke City on Tuesday 27th January and this was the first fixture that Wilson Palacios served part of his punishment the next game was yesterdays visit to the Reebok and by my reckoning that would have given Palacios his second game suspension, but he played?

Strange that a suspension could be overlooked by the Tottenham administration if there is a reason that he played I would love to hear it but I thought that the rules said 10 bookings two game suspension and those two games the player had to be eligible to play in also

That Lampard decision is truly awful. It should have been a free kick the other way.

Bosingwa deserves a decent suspension though.

its not a huge distinction but i think its worth mentioning. It was stupid without question and probably was a yellow card for pure stupidity. But theres two ways it could happen, he could simply stamp his foot right into him full force causing huge damage, or he could more like "put" his foot against the player and then once contact is made then "shove" the player. To be fair I think he did the later, one he didn't just use his hand to shove him out of bounds I have no clue, why he did it at all I don't know. But as is fairly clear from relative lack of reaction by the pool player it was no where near as violent/bad/nasty as it looked. Its a yellow for stupidity, as you might get for simply putting his hands on him and shoving him out, maybe a red to show him its not on but not worth a lengthy ban.

Had he flat out stamped/kicked out at the player it would be worth a 4-5 game ban because that would have been horrible, but you can really tell that didn't happen, if you stamp your studs into someones side/back then frankly, you don't just walk off as if you didn't notice it happen.

The Lampard thing was hilarious, didn't it happen last year sometime, or maybe early season, Kuyt maybe jumped across someone who had a relatively high leg, but that guy didn't touch Kuyt, and Kuyt with a higher foot caught the player in the side with studs, and the other guy got sent off and Kuyt rolled around on the floor pretending it was him that was caught.

hehe, then theres the Skrtel running jumping kicking his studs into Jo's back earlier this season which was much much MUCH worse than what Bosingwa did and caused an injury.

Liverpool are without a doubt the luckiest team around, first off the lampard decision was absolutely atrocious... Does nobody agree that most of liverpool goals are lucky deflections?

Also cannot wait till we get them to OT and bag the prize...

rich that coming from a manc

Chelsea are appealing the Lampard decision (obviously) and Bosingwa has apologised for his kick although that probably won't help him much.
I wonder if the people who are going to suspend Bosingwa retrospectively fancy doing the same to Gerrard, both of them should've been sent off so it's only fair that both get it if one does:)

FIFA in particular has been adamant that a red card in any football competition must result in the guilty player being suspended for at least the next game without the right to appeal.

I don't like how the FA have one rule for red cards, and Fifa have another.
I think Fifa being the governing body of football should sort out the appeal system.

(back to the Lampard thing)

Mike Riley might have made the wrong decision with Lampard, that alone doesn't bother me. What would annoy me is that Gerrard made a similar tackle and received no punishment.

Gerrard didnt do anything worth of a red.

Just watched the match again and can see why a foul was given against Lampard because he lunged in slightly but nothing more. Masch didn't have a stinker, he was in Lampard and Ballack's faces every time they got the ball and allowed Alonso to dictate the play for us. Can't blame Alex too much for the goal either, the movement by Torres was excellent.
Except going straight over the top of the ball?

Wasn't worthy of a red card though, a booking yes. Nothing can be done about it though as the ref saw it and only deemed it a free-kick :D

Both of which in the Previous 15 hours of football had resulted in red cards at other moments (Lampard in the same game [Lampard's wasn't as bad] and Delap against Man City).

Haven't see the Delap one but 2 wrongs don't make a right :p

Gerrard was high but he slid into the tackle rather than leave the ground and lunge nor did he make any contact with the player. He should have been booked.
