Weekend Football Thread 31-2 *spoilers*

If you're refering to the Zamora 'penalty appeal' then it's simple. He didn't do anything. Zamora's control was ****, the ball got away from him and Carra used his body to get inbetween Zamora and the goal (no pulling etc). Zamora only dropped to the ground once the ball rolled through to Reina.

The 2nd one he certainly does have a little pull at Zamora but Zamora's also pulling at Carra with both hands too. The ref's always going to give it the strikers way in that position and with Zamora running straight at goal (unlike Owen :p) it was going to be a red card. Degen's was a joke though; Dempsey's reaction got him sent off. At first you'd have thought Degen done him but the only contact is a slight knock with his trailing leg.

edit: just something i want to make clear regarding the penalty appeal. Carra wasn't playing the ball but that's something that happens plenty of times in every game and fouls just aren't given for them. Until that changes then what Carra done was good defending.

Watching the highlights Insua was at fault for 2 of their goals and could've done far more for their second. Awful positioning is costing him and us big time.

I know what you mean, I think Insua was side on for one goal (a little damned if you do (if he moves at the wrong time could be construed as hand ball- seem to recall ball being at shoulder /top of the arm height) and damned if you dont

On the other hand if I recall correctly there where a nymber of away players standing around not doing much close by but not close enough

Defend as a team as well as attack as a team, not just one or two guys

Pre-Fiorentina he'd been near flawless, he had a shocker there and has since struggled a bit. Saying that, his only real problem is his positioning as you say but that's something to be expected from a young defender. Hopefully with Aurelio back (as 'back' as he'll ever be anyway), it'll provide him with a bit more competition and enable us to give him a bit of a break.

He's such a great player going forward and he'll no doubt get better with time and experience at defending but how much longer can we keep playing him while he makes the same schoolboy errors week in week out.

Changed my mind about the Carragher tackle. The first he just out muscled Zamora but the second he pulled him back to get along aside him.

We've had little choice so far this season; Aurelio's only just came back from injury and it seems, picked up the virus at the weekend (with Insua playing vs Arsenal, I'm sure Aurelio would have played vs Fulham).

As above, hopefully with Aurelio back he can have a rest. I've still got little doubt that he'll be our regular LB for years to come.

Liverpool really are in trouble big time. I wonder what potential investers are thinking too? I bet it's putting them right off, which will only make things worse. :(

Just read that the majority of the players that were out injured at the weekend will probably miss the trip to Lyon as well. Only Aquilani, Agger and Aurelio have a chance of making the squad and Aquilani's nowhere near match fit so he probably wouldn't start anyway :(

So out of the CL we go and with it our funding for buying more players. :/

Oh dear.

Although one thing that really annoys me is the fact that Utd had a very poor start to the season and weren't they down to like 8th at one point? And they still won the league, just goes to show anything can happen, but the press seem to forget that.

Would be a serious financial blow to the club and one that would no doubt weaken the Americans position futher. Might force them to sell sooner rather than later.

Any prize money we got would just be used to pay off their debts anyway so we wouldn't lose out on any players.

Well apparently Villa is going to be available in Jan? Perhaps Liverpool could sell everyone except Gerrard, Torres and Reina and just play them 4, sure it would be an improvement :p

lol :p

The rumour was that Liverpool want Mata is it, instead of Silva or Villa, largely because he's bang on form(in all of a few games) in on 10k a week the club are desparately trying to get him to sign a contract but his manager(maybe his dad) is saying he's worth far more than they are offering and so seems to want bigger offers elsewhere.

Though thats what happened to a degree with Babel, they got a mecenary who went for the biggest paycheck he could find and look at the effort he puts in now.

I can't imagine in any way that the owners will fund another big name player for Benitez, and frankly can you really see Liverpool being the only club going in for a Villa or Silva and them choosing a highly likely out of champs league, heavily struggling to maintain title ambitions Liverpool for significantly less cash then can get in Spain or Italy due to tax reasons.

Utd likely have a heck of a lot of cash, Chelsea have deep pockets, City have massively deep pockets, Utd could do with both a left winger(silva or Mata) and a striker in Villa, they can offer more money, offer higher wages, offer continued champs league football and a far higher probability right now of champs league football next year.

Considering the only talk about Liverpool in the press is the pressure the amount of losses and the likelyhood of Benitez going, Liverpool fans are kidding themselves if you think any top name will choose Liverpool over any other top 4 team in the big 3 leagues.

I really don't think Benitez will go anywhere, it will cripple Liverpool if they have to pay him off.

But at the same time he is a **** manager so he has to go or nothing will change.

I presume you mean last season - this season we have started better than usual (althuogh we lost the 2nd game), I know last season we were pretty low after a few games - not sure we were as low as 8th though (and obviously if it was last season we had Ronaldo injured for a few games at the start which was mainly why we were so low)

The squad quality is the major difference , 1st team to first team is nigh on identical now, and with the potential question mark of Gerrard being out for a bit longer (another two weeks are some rumours?) and Man City coming up after the int break, it might not get much better for you (also clubs around you having played less games)

It will be a real battle for CL spots (let alone getting out of the CL group in top two places) for next season, certainly possible but just like the CL group, could be reliant more on other results going in your faour as much as your own

See its funny, even though I'm completely behind them at the moment, I just can't see Arsenal winning anything this year, despite the hype. It's like I've grown used to it, after our start two years ago. Despite how well we do, it's like I can't take any challenge of ours seriously. I guess its just the pessimist in me.

Exactly the same as me...id love to see Arsenal win something this season but i just cant see it...sure we have some awesome attacking players but our defence is leaky at the best of times and the more worrying thing is that we tend to lose our concentration...we almost did it again on sat against the spurs...we had a 5 min lapse which allowed the spurs to almost get back into the game but thankfully we saw them off.

Wenger did say at the AGM meeting that he expects Arsenal to win something this yr...i dont know if that was a smart thing to say...maybe he sees something that we dont...who knows but i really do hope Arsenal come away with some silverware this yr...preferably the Prem title and CL title thank you very much...

As for Drogba once a cheater always a cheater...he seems to love diving and falling down at the slightest of contact...if he would stay on his feet a bit more then id give him credit...but saying that hes good very good at getting the goals needed.

And finally mucho lollage at the biggest quitter in football ie Redknapp...what a bitter little man he is...sure Spurs gifted the 2nd goal but i think we could have scored at least 5 goals if our finishing was better...the other 2 goals were made by some hard work by Arsenal....all that crap they talked about in the papers has left them with some pretty big pies on their faces:p:D
