Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 29-31

Currently I reckon SAF needs to just play a settled 11, in 2007 when we had Saha and Rooney up is when I reckon we played our best football in recent year and almost out of neccessity we played the same players each game.

Now without Ronaldo and with our injuries we should play this:

VDS/Foster
Brown-Rio-Vidic-Evra
Val-Fletcher-?-Nani
Rooney-Berbatov

CM rotated between Carrick, Scholes and Giggs.

Do you think Rooney would work as an attacking midfielder to link the play? Something like this.

VDS
Brown - Rio - Vidic - Evra
Hargo/Carrick
Valencia - Rooney - Nani
Berbatov - Owen

Admittedly that's quite attacking, but you could move Hargo/Carrick in alongside Rooney with the instruction to play DM and as long as Valencia/Nani track back to help the full backs I don't see the issue.

It's just that Rooney seems to create as least as many as he scores these days, so maybe consider a position where he can pull the strings?

Why would you want to do that?

At the minute he is joint highest scorer in the prem, why would you move him into midfield?

Mabye Liverpool should move Torres into DM and Spurs play Defoe in goal, Rooney is a striker, he has always been a striker, he always will be a striker, now whether he plays best as a withdraw striker or right up top is debatable.

Don't be silly now. I'm not talking about putting him back in defence, i'm talking more about the way Cantona used to play, in between the midfield and strikers where he could roam the park and create chances as well as score them.

Face it, it's not like we have a good, decent central attacking midfielder is it?

You have the money to buy one. A Fergie failing if you ask me.

I agree with that, by why would you move our ONLY decent striker into midfield?

Just.................why?

It's not really midfield. Cantona played in the same position - would you call him a midfielder?

His faith in Scholes and Giggs is admirable. But both of them should have quit before this happened, now not only will they be remembered for the good times, but the period after as well where they outstayed their welcome.

You would get more agreement if you arranged that formation with Rooney playing as a supporting striker, hanging back behind Berb and Owen and ahead of Valencia and Nani.

EDIT: So a diamond 4-4-2 with Rooney just that little more advanced.

Berbatov would actually be ideal in the position. Or at least going on how he linked up with Keane at Spurs, he would be.

1stly there is the question of whether we actually do (yes we generated a lot of cash over the summer, but whether the remaining £60m is available or not is another matter)

The bigger question is who is actually available and would they really want to move to Manchester

Maybe Silva is available from Athletico, which isnt certain by any means, even though he is better on the wing he has been successful in the central role also, more than likely cost majority of the remaining money also - of the big names available he is really the only player of class available , and not entirely sure he wants a move at all let alone to the EPL

Van Der Vaart?

He would, and that's pretty much what I meant, looking back at my post now, the forums removed all my formatting. :(

It's something all the other of the big four have that we don't. Chelsea - Lampard. Liverpool - Gerrard. Arsenal - Fabregas. Hell, before Alonso left you could argue that Liverpool had two.

I'm talking about those midfielders who can unlock an opposition defence from nothing, create a chance from nowhere. Scholes and Keane used to do it admirably, alas one has left and the other is nothing like the player he used to be. :(

I totally agree with you that is EXACTLY what we need - but who is available and do we really have the money for them (and would they really want to come to Manchester)?

edit - although its a bit of a moot point as its highly unlikely we would buy anyone anyway even if there was time to organise it

edit

so this is being proposed:

---------- VDS ---------------

Brown ---- Rio -----Vidic-----Evra

---------OH / Carrick/ Fletcher-----
Valencia ---------------------Nani
-------------Rooney--------------
----------Berba-----------------
-------------Owen-----

It would be interesting to see it tried but of course Owen isnt young enough to start every game (even if his fitness is 100%) , Giggs isnt good enough up front, Kiko and Welbeck arent experienced enough I would have thought (and its leaving Giggs / Scholes / Fletcher and Carrick fighting over one place every match)

There isn't really time. Plus you're right, I don't know who would be available or would come to Manchester.

I'll have to give it some thought tbh. :p

From looking, I can find players who I think would suit but i'm not sure they would be anywhere near available.

Only possibles I can see - Van der Vaart, already mentioned, or maybe Ribery?

There's also Robben, although he's more of a winger?

Age old problem - Man Utd have the right manager, have the success ......but its Manchester lol

Thought Robben was actually sold recently (or was in talks about wages at the very least)?

Do we want Real's cast offs lol - VdV was only good enough for impact sub role and he is being proposed as 1st XI at Man Utd, you also think he could cope with speed of the EPL (which was my initial concern, maybe unjustifiied)
