I also think it's a matter of existing players improving. Anderson and Carrick had a good partnership for a number of months before, we played well, kept possession and both of them played in sync. Now we have probably the most unsettled team we've had in a few years, no first 11 who are picked on a regular basis, no central midfield partnership playing game after game. No settled partnership up front. No regular right back. To be honest Carrick and Anderson who have both been pretty woeful this year in various games need to buck up their ideas.
Carrick has an excellent passing game and can intercept the ball from deep inside our own half but unfortunately will never just take the game to the opposition, he lacks that bite that the other top 4 have in Fabregas, Lampard and Gerrard. Chelsea and Liverpool also have a proper out and out defensive minded central midfielder, we don't. Hargreaves as much as I like him is basically banjaxed. Anderson has all the pace and skill and that vision to pick out a killer pass when he's in the right position but he's never in that right position as he plays too deep.
It's not a matter of Ferguson not having the money to spend, he does, I don't buy into the Glazers withholding it to pay off debt interest, I just seriously think there isn't a great deal of talent out there currently, and the ones that are haven't been discovered yet. Things will look better once we have Ferdinand back and fit, Brown getting match fitness back and playing at right back, Valencia and Nani settling on their respective wings and Rooney getting the support he should be getting and would be getting if we had a more attack minded central midfield.
