Weekend Football Thread *spoilers*

:D I just read that Phil Thompson was having another go at Arsenal on Saturday and in maybe his best and utterly delusion rant yet, his main point was that Arsenal (yes, Arsenal) only have 2 world class players. Lovely. Apparently Arshavin is 'good' though which is quite nice I guess

Edit - http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,26691,16426_5769725,00.html his reaction to the Arshavin goal is pretty much the same as mine :D

Really depends on your definition of world class, most people seem to base it around whether players would get into a World XI team and if that's the case he's probably right.

Well when Fabregas cant always get into the Spanish starting XI - didnt he get a sub appearance in recent Euro final - (and to me he is probably Arsenal''s top player), that World XI team cant possibly include all the world class players around at any one time , even if you bother including subs for the world team

Well.....if Fabregas can't get into the Spain team it's normally because Xavi/Iniesta/Alonso are in the team, which by default means he can't be 'World Class' because he can't even get into his National side.

If he was 'World Class' he would be in there over Alonso Shirley?

I do think Arsenal have a few more than 2 with Sagna, Clichy (ok he wasn't great last year, but overall there aren't many better) Gallas and Arshavin along with Fabregas and RvP who he quoted. The reason I posted it was that I found it funny that he accused Arsenal of relying on 2 players, especially when one of them was missing yesterday and the team was still OK

He started the final, he plays most games. It's no longer Fabregas on the bench automatically, Xavi/Iniesta/Fabregas get rotated now for Spain, one of the 3 is usually injured/rested anyway. Anyway, world class means amongst the top 5 or so players in the world imo, Fabregas (especially recently) has been up there

Alonso is a holding midfielder, Cesc is an attacking midfielder, can't see why he'd replace Alonso personally, it'd ruin the balance of the whole midfield

It would also mean that Liverpool fans would think they have 3 world Class players, yet the are only above Birmingham on GD...

Didn't someone on here say Liverpool had sold the best Midfielder in the World in Alsono?!

no one else think that frgie made a mistake playing 1 man up front at HOME in a must win match at villa? and then opting for an emergency 3 up front out of panic?

whats the point in playing it out to the wings constantly when you only have rooney up front. im no premiership manager but when you only have 1x player in the box who scores probably less than 10% of his goals via headers, then a gameplan based around 3 incompetant wingers seems a bit of a faux par to mee.

anyone know why rooney takes corners? most of the time he doesnt beat the first man (or man on the near post)... given that we are one of the richest clubs in the world you would have thought that we could buy someone in to take corners and cross the ball?

For the record, I don't mind if he thinks Arsenal only have 2 good players, just the irony in the statement is the bit that amused me, with him talking about Arsenal and Liverpool and making that accusation against Arsenal, not Liverpool. Arsenal are more of a team than a set of induviduals, Arsenal can't afford to buy world class stars usually

I picked Alonso as the weaker of the 3 midfielders I named, you know as well as I do he hasn't got a chance of replacing Xavi or Iniesta at the moment.

Hence why he's probably not classed as World Class by some people.

You can see how the conversation would go........."Fabregas, he's World Class, excellent player"

"Yeah but he can't even get into the Spain starting 11 so how can he be classed as World Class"

You can see their point really.

Really don't know what has happened to Liverpool this season. Complete mess at the moment, unsure of where we will finish the league this year, I will be very surprised if we make the top four this year.

It's almost like being back in the 90's. :(

I can see why people would use that argument, sure. To them I'd say watch him :) Make up your mind from what he can do on a field, not that Spain have got a copious amount of phenomenal midfielders!

I also think we'll see at the World Cup that Fabregas isn't second choice anymore, he was sub/started a few of the early Euro 2008 games and he was that good when he did make his cameo appearances that by the final he was in the starting line-up, pretty sure that hasn't changed. You have to make space for players like him

He's not picked for Spain, because the manager tends to go for players who play in spain, or together, maybe not without justification in some circumstances. Alonso barely played over Senna, partially Senna getting older but all of a sudden Alonso is a first team starter since moving back there.

THe Euro's what 80-90% of the goals were scored with Fabregas on the pitch, he had more assists than anyone on the team, Iniesta or Xavi considering a good 1/3-1/2 less time on the pitch. He I think scored the same as one of them and one less than the other one. Spain were a massively better side with him on the pitch and the only reason he was quiet in the final was he was double man marked, Xavi wasn't, goes to show who the other side thought was the biggest threat and most important to shut out of the game.

If Fabregas moved to ANY Spanish side he'd be the first name on the teamsheet, thats just what the Spanish national team is like. Also suggests to me that Fabregas/Xavi was more effective than Iniesta/Xavi, considering the latter pair has played together hundreds of times together they should have a perfect partnership, yet Fabregas/Xavi is always more effective.

Starting to get a little irritated by how vocal Theo seems to get in the press, just like Adebayor. He's turning into this arrogant little git who everytime the team wins he goes out and talks about how great the team, and he is and this time how beating a top 8 teams means we're in with a shout at the title again. Its a long shot but this ridiculous swing, lose, we're out win one game again and everythings fixed, the next loss hits the team harder as they've convinced themselves they were going to win easily.

Also found the "don't worry, I'll be fit for liverpool" type talk from Theo before the game was laughable, he's convinced himself he's fantastic and unmissable it seems.
