weight issues, diet pills and a general get-it-off-your-chest-moment

forgot to add its not in the slightest bit hard to stick to my low carb diet and I dont get hungery or crave anything

however I dont count the carbs I jsut strictly dont eat any high carb food, if im hungery I will eat as much of my low carb snacks as I want regardless if it happens to add up to a load of carbs...

You don't count carbs but you count carbs?!

one thing I always think about...

Most diet advice seems to be geared at someone who wants to lose a bit of weight, maybe a few stone or whatever.

I always think that because I'm looking at more like losing half my own weight...maybe it needs to be more drastic than just "eating smaller portions" or "walking for 10mins every few days"....

I also wonder about how much belief to put in the idea that "some people are just meant to be big". Obviously not to the extent of my size but for example, I have size 14 feet and my handspan is just over 30cms....I mean, I'm going to look like a clown if I weighed 12 stone or something.

Its like anything you've got to start slowly for the best chance of sticking at it, obviously once you get into the swing of it and start seeing some weight loss and increase your fitness you can then start to increase the amount and intensity of your exercise and become stricter with what you eat.
When you hit a weight you feel happy with and are happy with the way you look then you can just start to maintain it, theres no one size fits all when it comes to weight.
At 5'8 and 16ish st at the moment I don't look absolutely huge whereas someone else at my height and weight may look absolutely massive its all down to the person :)

I dont take any notice of the 20g/40g(?) a day limit, however I dont but any high carb food..

ie I dont add up all my card to ensure they are under teh 20g, I just (without counting every card) avoid eating too many carbs...

I have no idea how many carbs I had yesterday or any other day (I just know it must be fairly low as I dont eat and processed / pre packaged meals or usual treats)

Losing weight is the same basic principle whether you're 20 stone overweight or 2 pounds overweight, calories in less then calories out.
And since walking about you're carrying excess mass your metabolic rate is higher than most people, that's why it's important not to just quickly remove a thousand calories or a meal.

And of course you think 12 stone would look weird, just have a look at what the bmi suggests you should weight at your height.

Rapid weight loss on the whole does not work.

The body with somebody slightly over weight/obese should aim to loose on average 2lbs per week. As you're probaly more obese (no offense intended) you can probaly loose more but shouldn't aim to.

A drastic cut in calories and diet change will slow your metabolism massively or even halt it all together resulting in a weight gain.

I really really really would dig out tom_e and Darkshadows threads, I can't stress this enough, as they are fantastic examples (backed up with proof) or what you can achieve. As opposed to having 40 people banging out every idea under the moon at you or someone 'claiming' to be a Doctor telling you to dose up on multivitamins.

It took you years to put the weight on so it'll take you a while for it to come off too.

I don't drink at all really...maybe twice so far this year?

Not sure I trust BMI completely...if you checked out a WWE wrestler or a professional rugby player, I bet some would be considered obese. Still I guess it's just a general guide more than anything

As said lifestyle change is in order here, there is no other excuses.

Be strict write down EVERYTHING you eat everyday for a month. Then have a look at it, you will know you have over eaten. Get out walking, cycling, anything that involves burning calories.

Sorry, I have no sympathy. It is your life, you control it. You don't want to be fat, do something about it.

Id go consider getting proffesional nutritionist advice, Id ditch the weight loss tablets at your weight you wont need them to lose fat.

Best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise, Can still eat loads and feel full and drop weight. I dropped from ~15stone to 11.5 in about 8 months this way (could do it a lot quicker with my knowledge now) and you should see even quicker results at a larger bodyweight.

Seriously. Take control. MONITOR your intake. Stop eating the portions you are. Don't rely on anyone to cook/feed you. It's your responsibility to watch what your eating. And it's as simple as limiting yourself to 1800 calories a day. You'll see weight noticably coming off over each week. You don't have to massively change your diet. Just monitor your calorie intake and start taking multi-vitamins. Goto Boots or wherever and buy a few packs. And also Magnesium, it helps break down and effectively use the vitamins you're intaking.

DONT STRUGGLE WITH A DRASTIC DIET CHANGE. Just limit the calories and take vitamins. I can end this by saying; I'm a doctor - and I can't tell my patients this information as it's against the guidelines. But when you're 20+ stone this will GREATLY improve your health and drop some weight.

Sorry if slightly off-topic, but I'm intrigued by your suggestion of taking vitamins. This is so because I put myself on a higher calorie diet whilst at uni to try and gain weight, but at the same time I wanted to stay healthy, keep my immune system strong etc. So what I did was to spreadsheet my intake against the RDAs (using nutrition data website) and ensure I was getting everything in close to the right quantities. What I noticed was that although I was having nearly 600 calories extra per day on average, my weight has begun to decrease. Perhaps a tiny bit lost to excersise such as walking burning it off, mabye some being lost due to this house being quite cold, more calories coming from protein than is usual, but nothing which can account for what I'm seeing. Could the vitamins I'm consuming from my diet actually be somehow responsible?

I was 20stone now im 17 after 4 months of weight watchers, it works!

Stop drinking and snacking and the pounds are falling off, I can even have bad days and still lose every week I think its improved my metabolism, im so pleased im 6ft5 and 17 stone want to get to about 16 so gonna keep on WW

If he is used to 3000+kcal a day then a drop to 1800 is bad.
Needs to be a progressive drop so that the body gets used to it and accepts it better.

Wow. Surely as a doctor you know to get l the facts first, maybe you should read all of the ops posts here :p

According to his profile, he's only 20. So not a Doctor then :p

I'm afraid the only way you're going to lose weight is will power and perseverance.

You can do all the fad diets you like, pop all the pills you like, go to all the clubs you like, but if you're not dedicated it's not going to work. Also, try to stay positive, any negativity can be like 2 steps back.

It's hard work to achieve a goal, but very easy to undo all your hard work, so stick it out. :)

Diet - your diet is the hardest and most important thing to get right, you need a diet that contains all the vitamins and minerals you need but at the same time less calories than you actually need to force your body into burning body fat. I've found the best way to do this is to have a regular routine of meals and try to eat as much fresh fruit/veg/nuts/meat as possible by cooking your own dinners. Cut out pre-made food, it may be the same mass as fresh food but it'll contain lots of additives and more calories. If you're wanting to loose weight fast speaking to a nutritionist will be the quickest way, other wise doing it your self you'll loose time with trial and error in finding your best diet.

Water - drink lots of water, it helps keep you regular and an easy way to cut out calories compared to tea/coffee/fruit/fizzy drinks

Exercise - Do as much as possible, start off slowly as the first week will be a killer if your body isn't used to it. This tends to put a lot of people off. Once your body gets over the initially shock you should be able to start weekly routines to control what you're doing to increase/decrease when needs be to optimise your progress. I'd hit the cardio pretty hard to increase your stamina, if you do weights having more muscle increases the amount of calories you burn but muscle growth with be under your body fat, so bulky up would make you look fatter. Again if you're wanting fast results I'd pop down your local gym and ask them to personalise you a gym routine.

Sleep - have a regular sleep pattern, you'll feel better and will help your body recover quicker. I find if I'm tired I tend to feel more hungry.

Due to your size hitting your ideal weight is going to take a long time, so all these changes need to made so they're part of your life style and not just a diet/fad that you can turn on and off. The key thing you need to do is make everything routine, once you have achieved this say going to the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be automatic and you'll think nothing of it. If you don't you'll give your self choices which will ultimately cause you to lapse.

Think of the extra calories you burnt getting of one stop earlier!

Anyway, just eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly, it's as simple as that!

I really really wish people wouldn't say that, if it WAS as easy as that, then no one would be fat, theres so many reasons people get fat and can't lose weight.

For one thing things are produced in fatty cells, hormones, hormones that make it harder to lose weight.

Someone whose 20 stone will have higher levels of certain hormones making it harder to lose weight than someone who is say 12 stone , etc, etc. Nothing in life is "that" easy, and the worst thing you can preach to people is that its easy, because it only depresses those trying to lose weight further. When people make false claims, and people trying to lose weight can't forfill those claims.

8.5 lbs in 5 days? Well that isn't dangerous.

Anyone who knew pretty much anything about losing weight would know that weight loss in the first week or two will FAR EXCEED that of at any other point. Its call water weight, its completely safe, it happens with most "diets".

If you want to help, help, if you want to post sarcastic comments and inaccurate statements, you could pick another thread.

Sorry, is there a better forum? Any mods can move?

My current diet (weekday)....
Breakfast - Never
Lunch - generally a cheese sandwich or a caesar wrap
Dinner - Usually something like cottage pie, chicken breast with "healthy" oven chips and veg or pasta in out-of-jar sauce
Liquids - a mix of flavoured bottle water or watered-down cordial....maybe a can of coke if I'm feeling it

Thats not massively far away from what i used to eat at 25st. Even with around an hours walking a day I lost nothing.

The whole eat less, exercise more thing isnt always as simple as people proclaim.
