What are the 30 year old plus gamers playing?

As a huge Souls games fan, 2 of the series eluded me. Bloodbourne and Sekiro. The former because of old tech, waiting for a refresh of the title. The latter I just didn't click with.

Well, the weekend just gone I spent every waking minute with Sekiro and it might just be up there with the original dark souls experience for me. It's a bloody masterpiece!!

For anyone who previously dabbled but got put off, 2 things. Don't care about dieing, the dragon rot really isn't a problem and you can ignore it for the most part (it only effects side quest progression).

Secondly, the first half of the game is challenging, but it's not because the game is unfair. It's because you don't have all your unlocks. About half way into my current playthrough it just clicked. And now I can't put it down.

Here is a little checklist I've been using as a rough guide for my first completion as well which is vague enough that it's not intrusive or hand holding.

@TNA

@agnes I've been telling people on these forums what a fantastic game it is. I even gave up on it the first time I tried to play it as it was just way too hard. I played 2hrs and gave up.

Months later I was determined to give it another go and at least get my moneys worth out of it so started playing it again. In the end it took me 160hrs and is one of my all time best games.

160 hours!! :eek::cry::eek:

On a whim, I installed Wartales from Game Pass last week. Saw it had decent reviews, but didn't know much about it. Tried it out, found it confusing and directionless, and I was pretty sure I'd messed up my first hour or so with it, so gave up.

At a loose end on Friday evening waiting up to pick up our eldest, gave it another go to fill some time and restarted. I somehow managed to put in 8 more hours since then and am pretty hooked now.

Sekiro is a brilliant game, so much depth to it. The game play mechanics are actually quite simply, but until you realise this the game feels like an exercise in frustration. Loads of replay value too, different endings, multiple dialogue lines etc. I really hope Fromsoftware announce a sequel soon.

Currently replaying The Order : 1886

Still looks pretty good considering it's age, entertaining at times but a little sluggish and too many quick time events for my liking. Will see it to the end.

Back to Baulder gate enhanced, I always forget how utterly tedious the starting of this game is. Gone for the classic, fighter, thief, mage, cleric roll all human and evil in alignment and will slaughter any non humans that stray into my evil genocidal path of rage including woman, basically going to roll play being a member of the Taliban because I can and the Guardian can lump it :)

Baldurs gate 3 had it since launch but don't get much gaming time, loving it still and I can see myself doing a few runs of this game with different classes and decisions.

I'm mostly playing Minecraft at the moment, weirdly there is nothing more entertaining to me than chilling on the sofa with my Ally mining and finding interesting caves then tidying up the path ways to the mine and making everything look nice.

@TNA

It's not as large as Elden Ring, but the bosses are much harder (and the mobs in general). So takes around the same time to complete. Also took me around 160hrs to do Elden Ring.

It's an absolute masterpiece. Elden Ring is fantastic too, but I think Sekiro is better because it's more focused on what it is. Elden Ring has too many options and easy ways out.

If Elden Ring is a 9/10 Sekiro is a 10/10.

160h is hella long, it won't take you anywhere near that probably. My Steam says 67h for 100% completion and that's including some faffing about with translations from Japanese. I did savescum the last ending so I technically did 3 playthroughs but running through the game in NG+ is quick anyways.

Elden Ring, yeah, that can take a while depending how much you explore and considering the size of the map and the amount of secrets, options and builds.

Yeah, I am just full of admiration for the dedication of sticking with it for 160 hours. There must have been some real roadblocks on the way! I think I would have given up before then.

My playthrough was around 40 hours, although I never did go back and fight the optional demon boss in the end, and I only have 67% achievements completion. Probably a cue to dust the game off for another go sometime in the new year...

Which do you think is the better game? I don't enjoy Dark Souls games, but happy with souls like when done right.

If I'm honest, I couldn't put it down till I got absolutely everything done, I was absolutely addicted to it at the time:P

I felt the same way right up to the end, but Isshin just broke something in me. :)

Took so many tries and I was actually kind of mentally exhausted when I finally cheesed my way past him. Left it installed for ages meaning to go back to it, but just never did.

I kept screwing up the jump-on-head/mikiri counter cues, then failed to read the spear timings and every run just sprialled out of control on phase two or three. Ended up getting so flustered I even died to Genchiro on some runs. Usually taking a break and coming back helps with these boss walls, but I just kept messing this one up time after time. Until I just cheesed it and face-tanked with the rice balls and damage reduction consumables.

I still rate Sekiro a bit higher because of the combat, Bloodborne as well as a whole, but Elden Ring is still damn good.

It is like Souls but a lot more flexible and the entire landmass and level design is great. When you get into Stormveil, the first legacy-style location, you begin to realise the sheer scale of it. A multi-level castle with unlockable shortcuts, secrets and optional bosses weaved seamlessly into the rest of the world. There are locations of this scale that are completely optional as well. Mind-boggling on such a dated and unoptimised engine. Generally, you have a lot more choice here. Struggling with a boss? Just ride into the horizon, discover stuff, go back or completely change the order of progressing through the game if you so wish:p

The game has some flaws and missteps and I think it should've been smaller and more focused but it's still absolutely worth trying.

Also, I think you'd enjoy Dark Souls more if you stuck with it a bit longer but it's my least fav series of theirs as well. Took a while to click because of the slower combat. DS3 is still worth a playthrough and so is DeS Remake on the PS5.

From haven't made a bad game yet IMO, just games that might not appeal to everyone for various reasons, be it difficulty or gameplay choices etc. Armored Core 6 is great as well and a must for mech and fast-paced combat lovers.

I was a Sekiro nut at the time, finished the entire game practically without prosthetics, then Demon Bell in NG+ cycles:D

Isshin took me around eight tries but I have slightly above average reflexes and pattern reading + some fighting games experience and I can't say that doesn't help:p

The optional Owl Father ruined me for an hour or more of constant trying, though. It's a hard game. Genichiro initially took like 20-30 as well.
