What are you saving up for?

started overpaying my mortgage as a way of saving (took out in 01) afew years after joining these forums ,paid off 2010 ish then saved frantically with a veiw to relocate from west yorkshire to cornwall ,did that 2014 .
all done on rubbish wages ,not sure what im saving for now (on under £8 hour) but maybe convert one of the outbuildings into holiday accomodation or put a woodframe house in garden with full residential permission like my neighbours have done

Overpaying the mortgage and saving for a car. The impending New York holiday has put a dent in both of them temporarily.

To be honest ive always been pretty good with money,I tend not waste money on silly things that i dont really need so have a decent saving.

Sadly its NOWHERE near the amount id like to have to actually get things moving with my life,For that i need a much better paid job. :(

I've been saving for my holiday to New Zealand in January, the exchange rate hasn't helped though, the £ is worth approx 20% less than it was last year so everything is going to be more expensive.

I am also saving towards the cost of emigrating to New Zealand next year, i did intend on selling all our belongings and starting fresh with more money, but decided against that idea, and instead will ship all our stuff over instead, as most things are much more expensive over there, LG 55B OLED tv - $7500 (£3100) as apposed to £2299 here.

So, saving for a deposit for a house instead when we move next October. We estimate we'll be travelling over with about £25k, plus my wife has $20k in her kiwi saver account, my in laws have also offered to help out towards a house too, so we're on a good start when we get there.

Two years ago, i was a hopeless saver, as soon as i had a bit of spare cash, i'd go and blow it straight away, but i changed, and i saw the benefit of saving £100 / week and how quickly it adds up, now i'm addicted to it :D

Saving like a maniac so my daughter can have a better life than I had. She's currently in line to inherit 2 houses and quite a bit of cash. Hopefully she doesn't decide to do me in to get hands on it quickly!!

Sadly my saving means I can't afford a new PC!!

This always confuses me slightly. I don't know your age or your daughters age. But I have friends who have parents who have done well for themselves. Who are blasé about life (not saying your daughter is) but they have the attitude that when there parents die they will be sorted right out. Probably true. Even I would have a rather nice inheritance from my parents.. But seeing as they had me at 24, if they lived to 80, I would be 56. Similar to all my mates.

It's a long time to wait for my friends to become financially well off. Why not do it yourself and retire before your parents pass?

Best of luck with your plan. Help family out whenever, I know I will, but don't get so hung up about what will be left when you go...

All of my saving money goes into shares, which hopefully mature into a little profit at the end.

How long have you been doing this for? Where did you start?

I'm currently saving up for my first house, but we did have to buy the missus a new car (we, being me) which has set us back slightly.

I'm currently on parental leave with no income so I'm not saving for anything at the moment. In fact, I'm dipping into my savings to pay the mortgage. :)

based on current rates savings are for chumps so I am spending everything on porn, hookers and crack, YOLO man................

I saved stuff then done a trip in Europe, S.Korea, Japan, Mountain biking in the French Alps, Thailand and Vietnam all within 6 months. Now to save for a house, spend more on bikes, or go on more holidays :)

I managed to save enough for a deposit on a house which I've had for 2 years. Spent most of my money doing around half of it up. Now have a 5 month old and will be crippled with £1k per month child care for the next few years.

Roll on tax free childcare hopefully.

Bought our first house recently, stretched ourselves to buy the biggest house we could. Recently redone the garden, and now saving for a shed.

Inside the house we have a small shopping list of 32inch TV for bedroom. 55inch 4K all singing all dancing TV for the living room and a wardrobe for 2nd bedroom. Hopefully have these by the new year.

Frustrating to go down to borderline zero savings on a monthly basis seeing as 6 months ago we had a house deposit, stamp duty, cash for furnishings and the garden..

However after dropping all that I am looking to treat myself to a monitor and gfx upgrade. I will need to spend more nights in on the PC to get the savings back up!

There will always be stuff to improve / update on the house and if not updating, any extra income (dividends) generally goes straight into over-payment as I plan to step up the ladder in the next 5 years or so. I have a healthy pot saved ready for settling various wedding payments in the next few months and the rest of it will probably just be sat there as I like to have a financial buffer "just in case". Currently just trying to balance out having fun / living life now whilst being sensible and thinking of the near future; kids, future house etc.

House.

Those box sets can be pretty expensive..

Currently a big chunk goes in to the wedding fund (getting married in 2018) so we are paying everything off for it so that will cover the next year and a half. After that it will be saving up like crazy for another 2 or possibly 3 years to get the deposit together to buy the house we currently live in, after that probably doing the house up and a PC upgrade.

Beyond that no idea :D

Saving for spending money for next holiday to Japan as its a lot cheaper to buy some things out there second hand (e.g. concert boxsets) and bring them back compared with just importing them new.

Other than that ... I need a new NAS (and disks)
