What did you do to your bike today?

Anyone else had a claim outstanding when they took out an insurance policy on a Bike? I did when I took mine out in may this year, was told (after asking) that when the policy gets settled there should be a reduction in premium. The insurer now isn't playing ball after the claim was settled as a non fault and I got paid out. 'You'll have to wait till renewal time' meaning am paying £80 a month for insurance when pre accident quotes in 2014 were nearer £35/month (whatever that works out at a year). Thinking of trying the ombudsman for advice or cancelling the policy and taking out a new one with someone else. I'll have to pay a penalty of some kind I expect and will lose 6 months no claims but the savings will outweigh both of those. They are checking their phone records to see what was said, apparently. What's the chances the tapes were snarled up that day...?

Edit: just checked the thread title. Oh well today my insurer more or less told me to sod off, but I can take this to a new thread if required...

Surely it's just the same as any other change in circumstance? Make a complaint and if you get no where tell them you're going to contact the ombudsman, the threat may be enough to get them to remove finger from backside as they get a penalty every time something is raised against them IIRC.

I believe the open claim would have been classed as a fault claim until it was resolved, and also your NCD for that year won't have increased at time of renewal, as it was non fault you should have gotten the extra year.

So there could be 2 lots of increase of premium they should be taking off - one for the extra years NCD and one for having an extra non fault claim rather than a fault claim.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah the previous insurer initially only gave 7 years but amended to 8 after I got back in touch (more running around...), now this. Will wait to see what they come back with but I think the Ombudsman is worth a shot.

I have to say through the whole process only the Solicitor (White Dalton) has acted with any competence and more than that, they've been superb. the insurance company and the broker have both been shambolic. At one stage I was calling the number and for the contact I'd been given and being repeatedly put on hold. Somewhere in my records I wrote down the duration of the phone calls and its embarrassing that I was desperate enough to be on hold that long, but they (insurer and broker) as mentioned have both been crap.

Left work at 6 this morning, everyone in the car park scraping ice of their windscreens, felt quite smug jumping on my bike and riding straight off, gingerly mind.

Really enjoyed ride home as all I've been doing of late is commuting on soaking wet roads, until I turned into my road.. Nice patch of black ice hidden by a shadow from a tree/street lamp. Lost the front end, stubbed my left toe as my foot went down, then the front re-gripped and the bike twitched throwing my right leg off the peg... To say I got of lightly is an understatement :o

She keeps telling me to take the car to work, the stubborn biker inside me refuses :D

Ooooh, 5p-50p time!!

It was pretty cold this morning, didn't have time to put on my muffs so had to do the old 'hands on the engine' trick at some lights near work :D

Merino wool base layer under my kevlar jeans are brilliant, not cold at all after 40 mins in 3 degrees.

What's 5-50p time mean?

Just an update for anyone who caught what I mentioned about my insurance woes. Today I called the broker, told them my outstanding claim had been settled as a non fault and NCB restored (which had been dropped from 8 years to 3). When I took the policy out I made clear and was advised that when the NCB was restored they would look at the premium again.

Well initially the broker said the premium would stay the same, no refund, but that next years renewal would reflect the updated NCB. Not happy with that, so I told them I would refer to the Ombudsman and/or cancel the policy. 'Rather than do that let me check on the tapes what was said to you when you took the policy out before we go down that road'.

So 16.55 they call me back (bit longer than the 'ring you in an hour' at 11.45...) and tell me that the insurer will refund £70. That's it. So my premium of £800 or so quid (pre accident quotes were around £350 ish) will drop to £730 ish. Cobblers to that! Told them I refused the refund and to put the offer in writing so I can forward it to the ombudsman, which they refused to do. Put me on hold, came back with an extra £30 (£100 total refund) as a 'good will'.

Well I wasn't feeling the good will at that point as I was sat in a restaurant trying to keep the kids sat down, so I refused that. 'Put your offer in writing in an email.' 'No we won't do that. Do you accept the offer?'

'NO!'

So it's been an eventful day, whilst the bike sits under a cover in the garage, blissfully unaware. My accident saga continues, and here I was thinking things were all sorted out.

My options now are:

1) Contact Ombudsman, presumably keep paying premiums then hope for a refund
2) Cancel the policy and take out a new one, and never use the tosspots at *not named yet till sorted out* again. That'll be another to add to the blacklist.
3) Just keep paying and grit my teeth, with one eye flickering, as the rage builds inside at the robbing nature of insurance companies. Quick to take your money and hand out promises, slow to deliver, despite whatever lies they tell you on the adverts.

I would have taken their offer of £100 (in cash refund)and come renewal time gone with another company

Fair enough, but I'll probably save more by cancelling the policy and going somewhere else, with 5 more payments left. All I'd have lost is 1 years no claims, which doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things seeing as 5 years amounted to around 12% off according to the Broker. I just think they are taking the ****.

cancel it then if you want to,make sure they don't hit you with any cancellation fees

it depends what works out cheaper,1 extra year ncb or cancelling before next instalment

EDIT: id still ask them for £100 cheque/cash refund then cancel it

Will find out in the morning when I ring them. It's more the principle of the thing. When I took out the policy told that when NCB was restored it would be applied and premium adjusted, then told (today) that would not be the case. Threatened ombudsman/cancel and a few hours later offered £70. Refused. Then £100. Refused. Feels very much like I was mis-sold in the first place if they never had any intentions of honouring what was said, and I would have gone to another broker/insurer as they were all around £780 mark with the inflated premiums from the pending claim. In the grand scheme of things £100 won't make much difference (the payout was over £8k and still sat in the bank) but I'm more bothered about the principle of the thing and being lied to.

I'm 99% sure it's almost identical to this - this is on a Shoei NXR (RF1200).

Curved mount on the side of the chinbar, then a normal base, a few 'normal' arms and a 90 degree arm. Easy :D

I woke up this morning with the intention of taking my bike, then when I looked outside and it was frozen and 2'c, I thought **** that and jumped in the car :p

Not ridden my bike since October :( bloody rainy and cold English weather. Im a bit of a fair weather rider however ;)
