What did you do to your bike today?

Not the cheapest stuff but especially worth it. I keep missing out on the Aldi deal which is quite annoying

Edit: Had a dream last night me and my friend were riding around a few sweet roads in Wales. Now I really want my bike!

I'm having a tough problem though. Originally I had set myself a budget of £2750-£3000 for a bike at the very most. Now it's creeped up to about £3.5 though I've seen one recently I really like for £3750. Is that too much money for a first bike? Am I really that likely to destroy it?

The sensible side says just get a rubbish run around for a while but the other side of me just says get what I want and be happy. Bah!

I guess it depends how you would feel if you dropped it, or threw it down the road really.

If you don't think it will be a problem, then get the bike you desire. :)
For me personally, I love the SV's, and I can't ride a Ducati like I really would want on an A2 license anyway :p

My advice is, if you really want your bike, with the thought in mind that you could drop it/throw it, and you are still happy with getting it, then go for it :)

you just as likely to hit that gravel, oil or encounter the idiot pulling out on your first bike as you are on your 10th

that's true.

I know R&G crash protectors wont always protect everything but I expect I'm most likely to fall at low speeds if I ever do. Do they provide enough protection for at least the damage to be limited to hundreds rather than thousands?

Though I guess from Tom_E's experience they certainly helped.

Without them I'd be looking at a trashed tank, nose cone, possibly would have smacked the bars hard enough to twist something and my leg would have been well ground into the road.

Yes.

When I got knocked off my Hornet the crash bungs took the impact saving my tank, forks, front fender, etc. - basically the difference between a write-off and the insurance company repairing it.

They're not good for racing or high speed crashes as they can flip the bike at which point it really is screwed! But for low speed & drops (and maybe high speed if it doesn't hit a curb), they'll save your bike.

Not sure how much longer I can trust these Metzelers in the cold, minus degrees this morning and they felt horrible, and all week they have span up almost every journey, a few times big moments at motorway speeds, not fun...

Well it must be about time for you to have another go pro moment for us all to watch :p

That alone makes them worth their price. Never even thought about my leg before.

Glad to know they do their job. I can afford for it to limit the damage and avoid it being a write off, that was my main concern. Get a bike I've always wanted and within a few weeks make it into worthless junk.

I've heard of the high speed crashes with them. I doubt I'd go to a track day until I had a year or so of riding under my belt at which case by then I expect I would be feeling more confident to not worry having them on (which I still would)

Definitely puts me at ease a bit more. I still think 3.8k is on the high side for a first bike but I know for the right bike I would be very tempted.

Neither had I until I realised I hadn't even felt hitting the road this time compared to when I done exactly the same on my little YBR which landed full on my leg.

Only you can make the decision really. I had for the SV for 9 months and didnt drop or crash it.

Pretty sure there's a member that got a Hayabusa for their first bike and doesnt regret it in the slightest

My local Aldi didn't have the merino top in my size, so just got it off Amazon for £22 (Sub Sports). Better quality so worth the extra £6.

This. I've never dropped a bike. Only ever been knocked off, which you can't worry about else you won't enjoy it.

So many forums I read said your guaranteed to drop your bike which has given me this massive paranoia that I'm going to wreck whatever I sit on.

Every time I've dropped mine it's been on ice, so don't go out in crap conditions and you'll be fine :D

Sure I have had crashes, most of them unavaoidable, but just dropping it.... 10 years of riding last year and guess what I did.... the stupidest thing you can do, think the stand is down when its not... oh the shame, on camera too, no you cant see :p
