What did you do to your bike today?

I've undone the left side, a bit of WD40 5 min and it was like a knife through butter. With the right side, i broke 2 allen keys...

Are the allen key heads getting stripped or are you snapping the shaft of the key?

If the shaft, probably best to get a 1/2" allen/hex set and have a go at it with a breaker bar.

The heads are getting stripped and the thread inside the bolt head, I was using 1/2" allen key and I've stuck a metal pipe over that allen key to put more pressure on it. It doesn't matter, I'm not too fussed about them.

It may not matter to you but it annoys me immensely when things like that happen!

I'd be at it all night until I had it off :p

Go buy a halfords professional advanced branded Allen key, if it strips they swap it for you.

Tried spraying wd40 inside the other end where the bobbin screws into? The hole/thread goes through to the other side, you might do better with an Allen key socket and a ratchet, you'll get more purchase on it,worse comes to the worse you can drill it out and re tap the hole

looks far far better ic3;)

I wrapped my heel guards yesterday, tempted to do the swingarm now but with some glossy type

I did my undertank panels last year and my rear light surround with 3M Carbon wrap. Came out pretty well.

Sounds stupid but are you using the correct sized Allen? I had difficulty with one as the best fit that I had was an imperial size but then found a metric that fitted perfectly and it was fine.

You'll strip loads if its ever so slightly too small.

Had a nightmare replacing my swing arm bobbins last year. Left one came out fine but right one refused to budge. I used a blowtorch on it to heat it up and then carefully began to try and remove it. To begin with it seemed like it was turning and then 'SNAP'. :(

So I then tried to drill the little sod out and somehow managed to snap the drill bit whilst doing so. So now I had a rusty, seized bolt in there mixed with an HSS drill bit. Eventually got it out because a mate who is a wizard with stuff like this managed to drill it out from the other side and then we fitted a thing called a Timesert (Google it if you don't know what it is - amazing little things!) and this allowed us to fit my shiny new bobbins. Here's a pic of the snapped one:-

A little bit like a Helicoil which we use at work when tapping anything Ali that will be bolted up tight with a small thread (M4-M2.5)

Well done on getting it sorted though. Nothing worse than that screech/cracking noise of a drill bit breaking when it's inside something important lol

JP's reference to a 1/2" hex set did not mean an allen key, he means a proper bit set with a 1/2" square drive that you can put on the end of a breaker bar.

There is no way you would need to put a metal pipe on the end of a breaker bar for a small bolt (guessing it's probably only about a 6mm hex?) so are you actually using one of these? If so use a hex bit and breaker bar, you get a lot more control.

One tip is to tighten a seized fastener first which can help to break the corrosion bond, before attempting to undo it.

Just tried to fit my tomok mirrors, what a **** of a job that is, decided to do the right hand side first, old mirrors came off, new mirrors went on first time with no problems.

Moved to the left side and the thread inside has gone smooth causing the bolt to spin inside and not come out, 10 minutes of pulling and twisting and it came off, but at a price... new mirror won't bolt in now as there is no thread for it to bite down on, looks like i'll stick with the stock mirrors or get some bar ends...

Got a few pictures, needed WD40 just to get the old mirror back into it and tightened up.

Here you can see the thread inside is almost smooth.

and this is what it did to the bolt trying to get it out.

That sucks :( mirrors are normally one of the easier mods.

You could use a Timesert like Draeger mentioned above?

Other option is to just find a replacement mirror clamp bit (the part that clamps on to the handlebars and has the mirror hole). e.g.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorcycle-Handlebar-Mirror-Adapter-Holder/dp/B009Z7O2N0 you'd just need to find one with the correct thread size

Just pickup a second hand bar/mirror mount? Or get that one re tapped, slightly bigger bolt

I hope you put plenty grease on them putting them back together
