What do you think of supreme commander?

why dont you get an opteron 165 and decent cooling then. should be about £130 for duel core and 2.8ghz

I can't change the cooling much as I have a shuttle. Also, it is really hard to find a dual core socket 939 Opteron.

I think a lot of people will agree with me, you're shuttle already comes with processor cooling as decent as a lot of good aftermarket solutions. heatpipe leading to heatsink at back of case with a large fan blowing heat directly out back, am i correct?

I have googled and had a look on ebay, as well as finding out which batches are good at overclocking. As I said, they aren't that plentyfull when compared to other options. I found one great possibility, only it was a known bad overclocker. Yes, the cooling in shuttles is top of the line, but it needs to be, because the temperature inside the case is higher than normal. I have 2 HDD's on top of each other, with a DVD-Writer right on top of them, all inches away from the CPU.

I'm not saying that it's impossible, just not going to result in a huge performance boost unless I can overclock a lot. There is no doubt about it, the game loves a fast CPU, and essentially paying ~£150 is quite a bit, unless I can find some benchmarks of how it would make the game playable when things get heavy.

Having said all that, I might be wrong, I might be able to get an Opty cheap, overclock it shed loads and SupComm love me. :) There is just a lot of ifs.

I know what they are like, The heat from the cpu is almost all shot straight out the back of the case though, its not the CPU temps that are worrying inside a shuttle, so overclocking isnt TOO bad in them. I had a 3500 newcastle on a high overclock inside my sn95g5, it fried the motherboard after a few years though, might have been the 2xsata drives, soundcard, dvd-rw and x800xtpe that pushde the power supply overboard though - not the heat :)

Not sure how much difference a 4000+ or something would make though..

My 4000 @ 3.1 is doing s pretty decent job of it - can play a 3 player game online without lag and 2 players vs 2 AI (hosted by me) isn't a problem either ...

Main difference is i'm running it at 1600 x 1200 - if i tried 1024 x 768 it'd prolly run very nicely as i can get by with medium settings at my monitors native res.

I'm stuck on 939 too unfortunately - might think about nabbing a dual core 939 in the summer - assuming any still exist :p

Does anyone have any benchmarks of Supreme Commander on Quad core Intel systems?

This is interesting cos this is indeed the 1st game designed for VISTA and DX10 with PS 4.0 patch is due soon to enable even higher quality graphics detail to the units/maps... but yeah it does support Quad core I just wondered if it did make the difference in the end.....

If any game can I think supreme commanders taxing as it is ! its gotta be good off a DX10 patch/card with Vista and quad core !

I have been playing, if you can call it that, at 1920x1200 with spec below, havent bothered a benchmark yet, game is so poor anyway, Cant wait to see my DX10 "DOTS" moving through the enemy base, lol

Company of heroes is also due a DX10 patch in the coming weeks, Infact the last patch upto 1.5 added a menu option for DX10 Shaders although this remains greyed out for now until patch 1.6 is released soon

Those dots.... belive me felt and saw the same nonesense.... I got sick and tired of zooming in and out and controlling dots on the screen... and then tried skirmish and upgraded the techs and saw the giant mammoth units appearing and thought ok..... the graphics look sorta amazing lol

When u start teching and upgrading.... the interaction and gameplay changes... I think this could be one fun game but like others hinted its boring in the early parts of single player.... gets more fun the more u play and enjoy it....

Skirmish sorta gives full one action/fun as well as online.

I still belive however CnC3 will own it but will find out in 3 3 days time cos westwood keep it simple and fun and to RTS basics heck they created Commander and Conquer need not say more ;)

Total Annihilation came out at roughly the same time as the original C&C and was overshadowed by it due to the media, whereas TA was relatively unknown (I found out by it by luck, and thank god I did), but IMO comparing the originals TA was far superior to C&C (scale, unit variety etc), so i dont have such a blind faith in C&C, Im not saying C&C was rubbish, but just I think it has a lot of red tinted glasses view, due to its popularity at the time.

Saying that, some of the people from westwood split off and formed the people who programmed Star Wars: Empire at War, which was ok, but not amazing, so they may not be quite as omnipotent as a lot seem to believe. If C&C3 is good though, I will be quite fair, I just dont want to proceed to believe it'll be the best thing ever based on the C&C name.

i am looking forward to C&C too, but i am having a great time in SupCom. i had Generals and its on my shlf still but i dont think i ever went trough and completed it, and i certainly never wanted to paly it online. SupCom however i can see me playing online quite a bit once i am a little more savvy with the game. seeing a few experimental units striding towards your base is an awesome sight, and the important thing is that they arnt indestructable. they are stong and pack a punch but they cant last forever.

while the naval pathfinding leaves a little to be desired (ships spinning on their axis because there isnt enough room to move) the battles that can ensure from having your fleet engage the enemy are great. when your battleships start pounding the shoreline and attacking bombers while the rest of the fleet protects them from anything else. actual proper battles is something thats been needed, you really can build a couple of fleets to taclke the navy and provide AA support, send some bombers in to soften things up with theom AirSup to back them up and then have the troops a rolling in over the horizon to clean up. multi faceted complex engagements. perfect.

I wonder, what does everyone think of the soundtrack?

Its definitely in the same vein as TA and can be very moving at times but its less varied and powerful as the original, which is probably the best game soundtrack ever imho. Don't listen to much classical myself but the original soundtrack was immense, so much so it felt almost out of place when I first played the game.

There's one bit of music they got absolutely perfect. When it kicks in I start to feel as if I'm actually in a battle, an epic one. It's fantastic. Some of the other bits of music are good but I'd agree, it doesn't quite match TA. I always enjoyed the C&C music as well mind.

As for C&C, it has the storyline, Kane and EA graphical polish, that'll most likely be it. I'd like to see 1 innovative thing but somehow I doubt it. Either way I'll still buy it, and love it probably. But I can see me playing SC much longer.

By the looks of it, I'll be getting C&C3 anyway, but I have no idea if it is going to be all that great. I mean, the series is hit and miss for me. There were a few too many that were graphical updates but lacked the gameplay updates to go with it.

I loved CoH, that was a brilliant game, graphics and gameplay, but I think SupComm will turn out to be the best yet. Just give them some time to iron out the few bugs, and let the mods kick in.

I played the demo on demo release day and turned it off within minutes, it was just so choppy.
Yesterday I upped my CPU from 1.8 to 2.1GHz, and tuned my ram timings... even that relatively small change made the game become completely outstanding!

Playing the second demo mission I got to a point where there was a base to the east with several T2 defenses behind walls. I rolled my 180man army (assorted t1/t2 units) up to the gates and pulled back when half were dead and I hadn't made a dent.

Back up to 160, add in 25 bombers with 15 fighters to confuse anti-air, co-ordinated attack mode, CHARGE! The bombers took out half the T2 turrets before falling out of the sky, and the ground troops just steamrolled the rest :)

Next I built up some subs and sent them south, preparing for a beach assault... but it was 2am and I was schleepy.

There was some heavy slowdown with ~200 units in combat, but movement and general use was fine. Zooming around the battle by scrolling up then in at the cursor is fantastic, I love being able to zoom all the way up! And the dual screen map... *drool*.

And I havent even reached tech 3 yet! :O

I'll be buying ;)

Glad to see there is another person who likes the game.

The one thing I was wanting (and I found a mod that I think fixes this) is the ability to lower the max unit count to say 100, for those of us with rubbish CPU's :)

Well I will finally be able to install my copy tonight (been away all weekend :( ). But I have been playing the Beta for a few months now and let me tell you multiplayer/online rocks. I am pretty sure even if you new people to the game complete all of the single player missions you'll be astounded when you move to multiplayer/online lol. People have become awesomely good at this game and on many occasion I have just sat there thinking how in beep did he do that!!! A great function I like is the Replay feature, means you can go back and watch your game and find out why you just got owned lol. Well hope to see some of you new players online, and for those poo pooing the game I hope you havn't just played the single player cos the multiplayer/online part is awesome.

just been playing this game today for a bit. so far it seems ok. need a monster cpu for huge battles. but so far so good. the best part for me so far was unleashing a "test" nuke on a couple of friendly bots. unfortunately i under estimated the power and wiped out half my base. (if you remember red alert nukes, think slightly more devistating)

slow to the like of warhammer dc

are you crazy? Warhammer DC (if you're suggesting Dark Crusade) is probably one of the most fast paced RTS games you can buy (except Battle for Middle Earth II)
