A Hijacking (2012)

The cargo ship MV Rozen is heading for harbor when it is hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. Amongst the men on board are the ship's cook Mikkel and the engineer Jan, who along with the rest of the seamen are taken hostage in a cynical game of life and death. With the demand for a ransom of millions of dollars a psychological drama unfolds between the CEO of the shipping company and the Somali pirates.

Fantastic tense drama based on actual real life hijacking, some subtitling in parts obviously due to it being a Danish cargo boat but don't let that put you off.
Excellent film which I highly recommend :-)

Highly recommended 8.6/10

Star Trek Into Darkness 9/10

Haven't watched any of the older films (apart from the last movie) or tv series, but I do enjoy these newer ones. Obviously tailored for people like me who haven't seen the other ones.

I think the opposite given the large number of nods (from the Khan rehash to the tribbles) to old star trek movies/tv series. The problem is there were too many and given the parallel world everything is new scenario they just didn't work.

Still a good enough film but thought it would be better

6.5/10

Star trek into darkness.

Relies too heavily on the original, not sure if it was meant to be.a homage or just inability to change things and stamp their own authority upon it.
I am not as big a fan of the original as most people, as Khans wrath was always justified and if Kirk wasn't a carefree sod, he would have chcked in on them from time to time and the original wouldn't have happened.

Anyway, as an action movie it was fine, most of the references were fine, just unneeded.
Karl urban is a great McCoy, Pegg is a great Scotty. I like Kirk, I don't see the point in the loveydovey stuff with uhura, but nm.

Hmm 6/10

Watched Now You See Me, good popcorn movie, kept me entertained enough 6/10.

Had a film night last night and watched Primer & Fair Game that I had recorded.

Primer. What was going on? I got completely lost at times but really enjoyed it as it was making me think.

Fair Game - Fair enough I think. The tin-foil-hat brigade probeb;y liked it better than I did but it was okay.

If it follows true trek fashion the next one should be epic, then the 4th not so much, 5th... epic, you get the picture :D

Really? In "true trek fashion" the next one (the third reboot) should be terrible and the fourth epic. That is pattern for the original films. Nemesis (ep 10) side-stepped "the curse" as it was an even number and very poor.

'Into Darkness' is either #2 as a reboot or #12 in the series. Either way, the next one is looking dodgy. :D

The Haunting (1963)

Rather hard for me to put a number to this one because I don't usually watch old/B&W films, but I think 8/10 sounds right. I enjoyed it more than I expected to, it had a real tense, creepy atmosphere without relying on the clichéd scare tactics that modern horror movies resort to all too quickly. In fact, I often found myself looking in the background of shots, at mirrors, statues etc for anything that moved or was out of place, and there was nothing like that. Quite refreshing.

Loved the dialogue too, it felt like each word and sentence had been crafted to serve a purpose rather than just being dialogue for the sake of the characters talking, as so many modern films again seem to do. The dialogue was actually the reason I watched it in the first place, having heard it sampled in this ambient track by Biosphere (starts about 6 mins in, if you're interested):

In any case, it's certainly made me a lot more appreciative of older films and I won't be so quick to dismiss them now. Just need to find others that I may enjoy.
