What film did you watch last night?

When Evil Lurks - 7.5/10

I didn't like this quite as much as Terrified but it was still good. A bit too much Argentinian men shouting at each other for me :D I also couldn't shake the image of the lead guy being Roy Keane when he had a beard and that slightly shook my immersion lol. Agreed with Nitefly about frustratingly dumb decisions though, interesting theory about the men ignoring women though.

American Pie (1999)

I'm probably too old and too late to the party for this. Which is probably why I didn't find it particularly funny. Having said that, I don't think an age appropriate me would've enjoyed it much more either.

I was 19 when it came out. An all-time classic coming of age comedy for me. Still find it hilarious now

American Pie is definitely an 'of its time' movie. It's firmly entrenched in 90's culture. They're funny because I grew up with them, I'm not sure I'd like them as much without the memories and nostalgia.

lol that’s exactly what my wife said: it’s Roy Keane :D

Cube (on Amazon Prime)

The budget sci-fi ‘classic’. People wake up in a strange maze of cubes and try to figure out what is going on / how to escape.

I’m not certain if this was ever shown on Channel 5 back in the day, but this has “9pm Channel 5 film” written all over it :D

It’s alright. Great premise, fun characters in principle but holy moly the overacting as it progresses…! It’s also a bit strange how the practical ‘cube interior’ look pretty good / stylised, even today, but then there is some awful use of ‘digital shaky cam’ later on.

Probably much better if you haven’t seen it before and don’t know the ending. If you can forgive the hammy acting then it’s pretty fun. And you have to respect what it achieves considering the low budget.

Cube is a favourite of mine, seen it quite a few times. There's 2 follow on films in the series, Cube 2 : Hypercube and Cube Zero (which is a prequel).

They don't particularly improve in quality, just advance the story a little. I've always kept an eye out to see if more where getting made. Saying which, I've just noticed a Japanese remake of Cube was released in '21.

Cube Zero and Hypercube are crap lol, but oddly I quite enjoyed them.

Ha yes I saw - I did wonder whether that would end up being one the latest ‘OOooOoo it’s Asian and therefore it’s so much better’ films… but the one review from Wiki says this…

"The movie is so repetitive and sluggish, and the characters so insufferable, that being stuck in the deadly cube might seem preferable to watching it."

:o

Apparently Lionsgate are producing a remake… so let’s see how that goes!

As for the sequel / prequel, I do remember them being pretty terrible… although this character from Cube Zero was amusing:

I liked the original Cube from the late 90s. Hypercube was kinda the Apple iPod / iPhone version, all bright and colourful :D

Cube Zero however, gave me a recurring nightmare for 5 months with respect to the scene near the start of the film where that guy dissolves / breaks apart in acid. I think that was a bit too much for a 15-rated film and I was 29 when I saw it.

Le Mans (1971)

There's literally no story here at all. No one speaks a word of dialogue until about 40 minutes in and that was just and exchange of greetings. After that it's just car footage and an occasional, but brief, exchanges between a few of the characters.

The car footage is pretty good and some of the best quality of an actual Le Mans race from the 70's. Even that's not enough to satisfy the racing fan in me and you'd be much better off watching Ford v Ferrari from 2019.

Joker 2 4/10 below average

I enjoyed the performances and didn't even mind the singing. If the film was made to deliberately upset the audience then OK, it worked. It could be argued the score should be higher because the film did exactly what is was supposed to do.

So, in a way, congrats to the director, I didn't like it.

Small things like these - Cillian Murphy is excellent in this film based around the Magdalene laundries in Ireland. Trauma, morality etc the works. Very heavy and very slow but good.

Paddington in Peru - not as good as the first 2 but was ok overall.

Grave of the Fireflies (on Netflix)

Animated film from Studio Ghibli about two young children in Japan dealing with life in WW2.

My first time seeing this. Yup, it lives up to its reputation as being a heartbreaker. Very sad.

I loved the animation - such detailed backgrounds against (comparatively) very minimalistic characters.

Well worth a watch… although, uh, maybe not at a party.

9/10
