What film did you watch last night?

Fury - 5/10

I thought the first half of this was excellent especially the sounds, I actually remember thinking blimey this could be right up there with my all time favourite war films like Saving Private Ryan if it continues in the same manner. Then we get to the final stand off scene and wow, that was just abysmal! The whole thing just descended into mindless hollywood sillyness - realism, logic and just about everything else went out the window. I don't think I've ever seen a film of such contrasting halves before, very disappointed.

2001 A Space Odyssey - 9/10

Immense, I was a bit worried that watching it on the big screen would highlight dodgy 60s special effects. It didn't, other than perhaps the sequence when he travels to the alien's world.

Sound and music were fantastic.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

The Book of Life - 9/10

Took my daughter to see it, and frankly I enjoyed it probably more than her.

The story and animation are some of the best and engaging i've seen as I was expecting
something similar to the Nut Job which was awful.

Would definitely watch again, a wonderful movie.

Calvary - 10/10

Full marks, all day long. Brendan Gleeson is probably my favourite actor and he just bloody shines in this. Funny and moving, this is a cracking thriller. Also, I think I'd watch the test card if Kelly Reilly was in it, and a suprising turn from Chris O'Dowd too. Quality.

The Shining.

Seen it a few times before, but it never disappoints. Very good film. Nicholson is fantastic in this.

It's one of the rare films which I prefer to the book.

Talking of which, I watched The American, after reading the book, the story differs, however still keeps true to the book for the most part. Whilst the film received mixed reviews, its quite slow, nevertheless, I personally thought it was excellent - 8/10.

It's a good film, and where critics often use the word "slow", I often find the word "thoughtful" seems to fit better. Things happen, just you get a chance to think about them and consider what's going on. You get a chance to understand and enjoy the characters and their motivations. We need more films like that.

Left Behind - 2/10 - Dreadful, there is absolutely nothing that can save this film, apart from the many "down the t-shirt" shots of the blonde daughter, hence the 2 points. Even Christians, who I'm assuming the film is mainly meant for, have been queueing up to ridicule this Rapture tale.

Speaking as a Christian I can tell you that the Left Behind books are based on a particular interpretation of the book of Revelations, which is weird enough as it is. It's very sketchy ground from a biblical perspective, so yeah, I'm not surprised the majority of Christians aren't too impressed with it.

Starred Up
Based on what a few said earlier I saw this the other night and thought it was brilliant. Top performances all round and nice to see a cool but violent British film once again.

Horns
Really was not expecting much from it as it's Radcliffe. Can't get the Harry Potter image out of my mind to take him seriously! But this film changed all that.

Surprisingly well played by both lead characters and very violent when it needs to be with lots of adult humour and imagery. Not seen a film like this before either, I can't think of another to compare it against so in that regard I have to commend it for trying something somewhat differently.

I think that new Adam Sandler flick will be heading a similar direction with trying something different but the flipping producers have shown most/all of the plot in the trailer that came out recently which is a sucky move. Thankfully the Horns trailer didn't reveal too much and I was pleasantly surprised.

We managed to get out to see The Imitation Game this afternoon while the mother in law took our kids to see Paddington. Success all round - we enjoyed TIG, good story, well told, good acting from Cumberbatch and the ever yummy Keira, and a good supporting cast in there as well; our kids and mother in law loved Paddington, sounded like lots of fun slapstick comedy.

Pacific Rim

Acting: Terrible
Script: Terrible
Storyline: Not bad actually, I really liked some of the concepts.
SFX: Lovely! Looks gorgeous in 1080p.

Can't believe how quickly the first 2 Jaegers got wiped out though, haha.

6/10

Combination of long flights and evenings stuck in a Riyadh hotel - so a bit random.

Anyway watched:

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - not seen the first one but loved this!
Any Given Sunday - Don't like American Football but this film is excellent. Diaz, Foxx and Pacino are superb
The Marine 2 - awful. But did have some chick from Heartbreak High in it from years back. Lara Cox?
The Italian Job (the new one) - was OK. Charlize Theron looked good in it :)

I watched Ghost Shark for a laugh last night, and it was almost so bad it was good.
Almost.

It started off bad and got worse...

Calvary - 9/10

Will have to agree with all the positive feedback, what an excellent film and performance by Gleeson.

It managed to blend between the comedy of Father Ted and the drama of Shawshank Redemption so smoothly and stay a coherent story.

The only thing that annoys me about that film is the sword. They spend 10 - 15 mins battering the kaiju using their fists and getting nowhere. Then later they deploy the sword and take out 2-3 kaiju with ease.

WHY NOT USE THE SWORD IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!!! AHHHHHH
