What film did you watch last night?

The Drop

5/10 thought it had a lot of potential but wasted a lot of it. The interactions of the characters felt very small scale and contrived.

Thunderball

This was one of my least favourite Connery films as a kid but watching it again in HD on ITV yesterday I really enjoyed it. Bond worked so much better in the 60s Cold War era.

7.5 / 10

The Blue Max - 7/10

Hannibal shows us what he got up to before joining the A-Team. This seemed to involve flying biplanes, getting mixed up with bad women and carrying an enormous chip on his shoulder.

I rather like this film and Peppard's aloof manner and cold eyes help this feeling along. Good action sequences too.

Hey, I enjoyed Battleship.
It was a lot better than I was expecting.
And this is from someone who hated each and every one of the Transformers movies.

Being a bit of a naval nerd it appealed and appalled in equal measure. The rest of it just made me wonder "Why!?" :D

I've never been able to watch any of the first three bond films from start to finish. :( I lose interest in Thunderball after thirty minutes or so.

Inbetweeners 2 - Two LOLs, and the rest was a smirk at best.
Mission: Impossible 3 - Always found the MI films entertaining, and this was no different. Still not as good as the first, but still always enjoyable.
Stand by me - A good solid film, and good to revisit.

Kung Fu Jungle
Donnie Yen in another city-kicker flick. This time the fight choreography is stunning, the sound effects too as were the cinematics. Excellent camera work from scene to scene and even though the story is the usual predictable affair, most people won't be watching this kind of film for the script but instead to watch people get their asses handed to them, which there is plenty of. 8/10.

Watch this last night and was really disappointed after someone earlier in the thread bigged it up. :(

Fighting was fairly average, very few good bits, some of the "killer" fights were very short and poor.

Its not a patch on other recent MA flicks, Raid/Raid 2 spring to mind.

7/10 at most.

It

Birdman

Superb direction and editing, as well as faultless performances from all of the lead cast, Michael Keaton and Edward Norton stood out for me.

As far as the plot went, although intriguing, occasionally funny and slightly delusional, I felt it lacked something, I felt there wasn't a force driving the film along, even if Keatons performance was brilliant. This could be down the the editing choice
all being shot in one continuous shot, bar a few very gente cuts
but then again the film wouldn't hold anywhere near the same level of intrigue, nor would the feeling of the crescendoing anxiety and panic from Keaton be conveyed with the same strength. This knocked one point off for me.

Overall I think it will certainly get nods (Oscars) for support role (Norton) and perhaps Keaton for leading, as well as for editing, oh, and I loved the score. I think Birdman certainly has a shot at being one of the best films of the year, as well as being an awards winner, but it didn't quite grip me as much as I wanted it to, not to say it didn't at all.

9/10

The Interview 8/10

Had to see what the hype was about.

If you like dick, poop and gay jokes then its actually quite funny. I found myself laughing along half in strange a strange confused shock and half immature state.

Kate Perry? lol so random......

You don't mess with the Zohan. It got referenced at NYE party so had to watch it again, I like the humour in it and though it is a stupid movie I still give it 7/10. If nothing else it has Emmanuelle Chriqui in it :D

I watched that the other day too. Seen it loads of times. I agree, the 1960's Bond movies are great. Some of the witty lines Connery says are still funny and don't sound dated. There was no better Bond, although Roger Moore was also exceptional. :)

Guys, if you like your medieval fix then I have to recommend a film that I have just watched on Netflix, and thoroughly liked:

Arn: The Knight Templar

It is truly epic, has excellent production values and imo a very authentic atmosphere (not necessarily in terms of historical accuracy, but it just feels like it should feel), and is one of the best films of it's kind that I have seen.
Mostly in Swedish with English subtitles, but parts are also in English where the action is outside of Sweden. Really, really enjoyed it.

I just read that not only is it a 135 minute film, but a 265 minute TV series too, so I may re-watch it with all the trimmings and extended bits to give more character background.

8/10.

Bit of a movie fest over the holidays;

The Babadook - 5/10....mother and child screaming into camera very annoying very quickly

Coherence - 6/10...interesting concept, not very entertaining though

You're next - 5/10...painfully predictable,

The guest - 7/10... good film, mish mash of loads of genres, great soundtrack

A walk amongst the tombstones - 4/10. Don't bother. Enough with these films Liam.

The judge - 6/10. Not a fan of RDJ, but film did strike a chord at times

The drop - 8/10 - Good film this, understated performance from Tom Hardy

Skeleton Twins - 5/10 - can barely remember what this about, twins with mid life crises. Meh

Match Point - 8/10 - Thought i would hate this, Rhys Meyers is rubbish in anything i've seen him in. But the story is good, and gets +1 for Scarlett

Inbetweeners 2 - 4/10 - Some comedy gold in here in a couple of scenes but a damp squib for the most part.

The Hunger Games (1st one) - 5/10

Mostly boring and nonsensical. For such a simple concept they sure did manage to cram in a boat load of plot holes.

A pretty poor film tbh. Sadly that makes it average these days, so 5/10 is about right :p
