What film did you watch last night?

Alice in Wonderland: wouldnt bother to be honest, not even Johnny Depp could save this garbage movie. 4/10

Astro Boy: Very good i thought, yes it was cheesily american and some of the voice choices were a bit confusing but the animation was top notch and the story was a good if not tried and tested formula. 7/10

Gone in 60 Seconds: An all time favourite, terribly overacted but terribly good, the star of the show was definately Eleanor. 8/10

Ice Age 3 with my sons, pretty standard animated kids fare, made better by Simon Pegg - 'I married a pineapple - an UGLY pineapple!' 3/5

Day Watch

I've been wanting to watch this for a long time. I thought they were part of a trilogy of films but a quick wikki read reveals they are 2 films of parts of the same novel (of which there are 4)

I didn't realise the director also made Wanted which explains a lot :) (although I thought Wanted was a bit pants)

7/10 Very good.

I personally prefer the original.

Moon - 2009

7/10

nice film, interesting idea...

but unrealistically played out...the computer should have been more sinister.. more like HAL...and not a friendly accomplice in it all...that made no sense to me. and like er...

plot hole:

if there WERE active signal jammers outside the base - how was the computer having a live conversation with earth?

I'm guessing he had access to the jamming station somehow. Which brings us to the original point of computer needing to be more sinister and more consistent in its agenda :p

I thought it played on people's expectations very well. We expect GERTY to be like HAL, but he isn't, he wants to help the clones.

The signal to Earth is "supposed" to be down. I suspect it's down just to stop Sam 5/6 from contacting Earth. Which he does later on in the film.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!

exactly - if you had a crazy scheme to take over the moon with clones and NEVER EVER allow them back to earth or contact with earth.. then why would you program it to help the clones without caveats?!

even robocop had said caveats built in to his logic...protect the people - arrest wrong doers but he couldnt touch OCP employees....

you would have thought that computer would have had a similar logic, help clones UNLESS it went against company directions...the robot shouldnt have let clone outside - clone should have had to fight his way out imo...

and i didnt like the little exhaust pipe on the crematorium that simply dropped the ashes of the clone right onto the floor next to the unit - in what world did that make sense when they had an entire floor below to hide the ashes?

and like...who went downstairs, undid the drawers - pulled out clone, took upstairs, and put into bed? the robot didnt look too handy in that manner (how would it get down to the lower deck in the first instance to take hold of the new body?).

and as for the videos on the computer of the crem doing its work...why was that recorded and saved? strange...

thing is, the GERTY is just a function of its programmer - so are we to glean that the programmer also wanted to help the clones in some way or at least allow the clones to help themselves?

yes the signal is 'supposed' to be down... they realise there is a circle of jammers...to send the message back to earth he has to drive beyond their perimeter...he later crashes the lunar harvester into the jammer to help bring the thing down just before he flies off..

sure the GERTY may have been able to negotiate the signal jammers and still send messages anyway but that doesnt tie up v neatly at all.

Thanks for the spoilers warning - oh wait ...

I watched The Descent : Part 2 - was pretty decent for a sequel, not quite as good as the first though, but it does pick up immediately after the end of the first which I liked.

Crossing Over. Two hours of wasted potential. In recent months I have watched few movies which have infuriated me more than this one.

Starts well but quickly descends into farce as a bunch of ethnic stereotypes lurch from one predictable crisis to another in a series of tangled story arcs. Harrison Ford does his best with what he's given, but to no avail.

I found myself despising most of the people I was supposed to empathise with because they had either gratuitously broken the law and/or were simply objectionable. Why should I feel sorry for the Bengali family who entered America illegally not because they were refugees (they weren't) but simply because they couldn't be bothered to go through the proper channels? They're just irritating ******. Sod 'em! How can I empathise with the Australian wannabe actress who cuts an illegal deal with an immigration officer, exchanging back door access for... er... back door access?

This could have been an excellent drama about the complex issues facing legal and illegal immigrants, but the scriptwriters were either too scared or too lazy to do the job properly. It's an intensely frustrating movie because you can see what it could have been, but it never actually gets there. Crossing Over currently sits at 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has been justifiably savaged. ("It's tired, preachy and about as thought-provoking as a Blackpool hen party howling We Are The World on karaoke").

Give this lemon a wide berth and watch Crash (2005) instead.

Green Zone.

Just got back, absolutley flawless.

Something is going to have to seriously impress me before the end of the year to remove that, film of tag.

The pace and direction is spot on, performances, location, screenplay... absolutley everthing screams 9/10.

This is the film patriot games allways could have been.

Well said. I am in total awe of Ganz. His depiction of Hitler is utterly believable. I have read that he spent four months studying Hitler's mannerisms and accent in order to achieve perfection in the role!

When the Russians finally arrived, they looked and sounded incredibly "foreign" to me (more so than they would normally, if that makes sense) and I struggled to understand why. I realised that it was because I had spent so much time immersed in the world of the Germans that I had begun to identify with them. Consequently, I found myself viewing the Russians through "German" eyes.

I don't know if anyone else had this experience, but it struck me as a testament to the brilliance of the cast, their acting, and the superb combination of direction and cinematography.

One of my favourite films. Bruno Ganz's performance as Hitler is the best acting I have ever seen. He's more Hitler than Hitler. Incredible film - The guy who plays Goebbels is great too.

Must admit, I had the same feelings as this. The fact that it's in German makes it all the more so too. You do almost feel sorry for them and feel their anxiety knowing that it's only a matter of weeks and eventually days and then hours until they are dead.

The Departed, absolutely incredible, second time round of watching it and I enjoyed it even more. Was a little sad to see the demise of Di Caprio :( But made for an entertaining sequence of deaths :D

9/10

-1 Because Scorsese gave Baldwin a serious role :p

Finally watched Twelve Monkeys (had it on DVD for a few weeks now) and really enjoyed it. Thought it had the right amount of "wackiness" in it and Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt were great imo.
