I watched Shutter Island, I really liked it and although i worked out the ending and all that really wasn't the whole point of it i didn't think. Great film.
Night before i watched Casino - love that film! Oh and at the weekend i watched The Ghost and The Invention of Lying which i thought were both nice films
Based on a true story, it's a tale of alien abduction in a small-town of Arizona in 1975. The movie itself felt almost 'Hallmarky' for its duration but had flashes of real interest and brilliance. The movie's climax for example, is certainly worth the wait and almost feels out of place considering the feel from the rest of the film, but then, maybe the producers decided to save all their budget for the 'big' moment.
It's one of those films you would never really think of watching unless it happened to be on television during one of those drawn-out bank-holidays or you otherwise stumbled upon it but you'll be happy that you did.
If you don't like anything to do with sci-fi or indeed, the X-Files (as an example), then this film probably isn't for you.
Seen more than a few lately that I haven't reported back on.
After Hours - Not sure what it is about this film but I like it. A Martin Scorsese film that you probably haven't heard of before about a man who gets more than he bargained for after a day at work.. nothing special really but for some reason I like it!
Shutter Island - Another Scorsese film but much more recent. Not bad but nothing ground breaking I realised what was going on 1/2 the way through, not sure why it is rated more than the 5.5/10 that I give it.
Pans Labyrinth - Quite a good film and I would say worth a watch. My only criticism is that I wish they would have concentrated more on the fantasy storyline as I didn't really think that the real life stuff that was going on around contributed much to the story line of the girl IMO and could have been done better. Still a good film. 7/10
[Rec] - Annoyed me 98% through out the film. The Spanish tart that stars in this film is too annoying for words - She yaps all the way through the film like an annoying small dog. I don't speak Spanish nor do I have anything against the language; but she is just annoying. I think my main problem are the actors and the way that many life or death situations occur yet the cameraman only bothers to help out on a couple of occasions. He is more interested filming than saving the bacon of those around him and even himself. These factors make the film unbelievable for me and it takes away the horror that the film is supposed to present to the viewer. I would go as far to say that Blair Witch is more of a horror and better made. The only time the film got interesting was towards the end when a jumpy scene finally happened and when the tart is flat on the floor and she shows some cleavage. 3/10
Some decent brainless fun and Travolta was pretty good. 6/10
The Hitcher
Extremely far fetched but managed to remain mildly entertaining. 5/10
EDIT:
Land of The Dead - Directors Cut (HD-DVD)
This is where Romero should've stopped with the dead series to be honest. With this one he went against a grain by using some established actors who are known to the general public and this seems to have other studio influences in it.
One major gripe I have with this one is the actual zombies. I personally really don't like how far he took the whole "evolution of zombie" concept with this one and just how much intelligence he has given them. He does that to a point where very little is left of the original idea and in the end even gives them compassion of sorts, which goes totally against what a zombie suppose to stand for. Another problem I have with them is their actual look. Most of the zombies and effect in this one look sort of "rubbery" and almost "cartoonish" in some places making it hard for me to take this seriously. Having watched this in HD this time just makes that problem worse.
Of course one Romero thing that remains here and that's his message and here's plenty of messages about the current wars, capitalism, greed, etc. There are the lines such, "it's not a battle, it's a massacre" or "we don't deal with terrorists" or the Nazi Germany like appearance of security guard uniforms. The scene with burning money also says it all along with other little touches. The score I'd give this one is 6/10 but that's only because I'm a fan.
I was originally put off the movie because of the low budget blair witch production, however after being told it was very scary I gave in and watched it. I wish I'd kept to my original thoughts and avoided it, predictable and not at all scary... I'm wondering now if 2/10 is too high...
