What film did you watch last night?

Hacksaw Ridge

Glad I caught it while it was still at the cinema.

I thought it was good. It had a bit of everything with more drama than I expected. It's not in the same league as The Thin Red Line or Saving Private Ryan however. It also didn't hit the emotional highs of those films. Andrew Garfield did well but I would have preferred a lesser known actor in his role. Also the action whilst excellent did feel a bit CG and video game cut scene in places.

I must admit I expected more based on Mel Gibson's past directorial efforts.

7/10

Also watched it, don't believe the story though. Being chased by 7 guys shooting, not taking a bullet and not shooting back, bs IMO.

That did seem like 'historical licence'. I don't know much about the history of the story, whether it was based on anecdotes shortly after the battle, or extrapolated from the interviews shown at the end in their later years.

I thought this film was absolutely fantastic. If someone goes to watch it to see something similar to the two films mentioned above then I can see why it may be a bit disappointing.

For me, it was simply the morality in the film that astounded me. I read an article recently that said that Gisbon had to actually tone down the script to the actual account to make it more believable!

The religious aspect aside, it was, to me, a story of being true to your convictions, no matter the cost.

8.5/10

John Wick

To be honest I avoided this as I'm not the biggest Keanu fan but I was pleasantly surprised.

One doesn’t watch a film like this for the riveting storyline or intricate dialogue but what it did deliver was a simple storyline of revenge, almost too simple, but it worked.

Disbelief clearly suspended, it was a fun film with a couple of (obvious) twists, albeit small ones, but for me the casting was fantastic with the likes of Lance Reddick (Bosch, The Wire, Fringe) which really added to the film.

Jack Reacher 1 & 2

I’m sure most have watched these films so far and no doubt have been reviewed to death on here but these are some of the best films I’ve seen in a while.

Always suspect of anything Tom Cruise, this is arguably the best franchise he has been in to date.

I prefer the first film but both are very entertaining.

Man Down - thought I'd hate it as I'm not Shia's biggest fan but it was a decent stab at it's intended storyline (without giving anything away), very powerful ending even though I'd pretty much guessed what was going on from a quarter of the way in :p definitely worth a watch 6/10

The Thing 2011 6/10

The Thing 1982 8/10

It goes without saying John Carpenters version is much better, but at least the 2011 film wasn't a needless remake, so there's that going for it.

Moana.
I agree with Easyrider's 9/10, it's a really enjoyable film.
Not only does it have angry Mad Max / Pirate coconut people, but it's also the first time I've seen somebody steal a boat through the medium of song :D.

Moana

Brilliant 9/10

Moana - was expecting it to be fantastic with all the praise and good reviews but fell short of expectation. It was a little hollow in the storyline and the music was so so :(

Still enjoyed it but can't help feel disappointed. It may have been the theme for me. 7/10

Surprised Easyrider liked it so much, tbh.

Having watched Finding Dora with my daughter the night before that was devoid of any charm , and a mismatched storyline...I was surprised just how charming Moana was. Some genuinely great animation moments and I really rooted for the central character. Some great laugh out loud moments too.

It's not perfect but damn good fun with some excellent characterisation
