What film did you watch last night?

Wołyń / Volhynia / Hatred (2016) - 7/10

A brutal and honest take on the persecution and hatred a village endured between its neighbours because of deep rooted evils.

The film lacks a cohesive story and has some rough editing between scenes, but does manage to cover a lot of content in its time span, and shows a good balance of the politics and cultures involved.

Strong acting with shocking and powerful imagery towards the end, but without knowing the history, can be confusing at times.

Finally !

Good eh? It gets better the longer it goes.

What is amazing is you almost think it is a documentary, the performances are that good, and how you believe they are the same characters despite them clearly, physically not.

It really does...Such a well told story and the performances and cinematography really drew me in :)

Moonlight probably deserves Best Picture, it has better performances, more original story, screen play than La La Land, I still think La La Land will win due to it is a subject every hollywood person can relate to.

Girl On A Train.

From the off you conceive it to be slow, coming towards the end of the film you'll be glad of that if your wanting to know how why when what.

Not a film for everybody, virtually no dramatic scenes, more of a show and play with emotional strings being pulled by the musical score. If you're a fan of the lead actress, you might owe it some of your time if you want to see an extremely good acting performance.

Not great because of it's one note tone. Better than average for good cinematography, and a good performance from ms Blunt. 7 should be seen as a good score.

Haven't watched it yet, but the whole premise sounds Hitchcockian. Like a modern day Rear Window. Yes? No?

A Cure For Wellness (2017) - 3/10

Starts off well in setting and atmosphere, but the slow and piecemeal pace through the weak plot really brings the film down.

Some great cinematography and scenes that will make you shudder, but it’s not scary, very rarely shocking and the slow reveal of the mystery isn’t worth the wait.

The acting's good, but the roles are very traditional.

Fences

Directed by and starring Denzel Washington, Fences is a film about a working class father raising his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life. No CGI, no car chases, no explosions, just a good story.

Like watching a play apparently...on my to watch list.

Watched it also, too long, could have been 90 minutes long instead 2 hours 20 minutes. Was a good story though.

Passengers

What the hell happened at about the halfway point, they ran out of ideas? Money? Never seen a movie go off the rails so fast, it was decent til then mind.

3/5

Sorry, I wouldn't know having not seen Rear Window. Maybe from what little I know of Hitchcocks work, you could draw the premise. Throughout I was looking for reasons, Blunts performance revealed nothing. Wasn't till the end perhaps in the manner your thinking, that those were sown up.

I'll look up Rear Window on your recommend.

Teenage mutant ninja turtles.

Actually enjoyed it!

6-7/10

2nd one is even better!!!

Patriot Day - Mark Wahlberg put in a really good shift. Story of the Boston Marathon Bombing. A bit over dramatised but thoroughly enjoyed it. I won't say anymore but probably one of the better documentary driven movies I have seen in recent times. 8/10

We watched X-Men Days of Future Past again the other day, in readiness for watching Apocalypse, which had come in the post from LOVEFiLM. Days... is comfortably superior. Apocalypse is endless bang crash green screen, and the key superpower seems to be the ability to deliver those lines with a straight face, although notable mention for Psylocke who was granted the ability to wear the fan service male gaze costume even if she didn't do much else.

Plot wise, a major problem is that there is no real jeopardy from Apocalypse, because you know that Jean Grey could take him to pieces at any moment, and then lol and behold she does. That also draws attention to the fact that all these films fundamentally revolve around a character getting too powerful and wanting to reshape the world their way, and while this time Jean gets to save the world, a few films back it was her turn to destroy it.
