What film did you watch last night?

It just annoys me a little that women who aren't 10/10 20 year old stunners get written off as ugly that's all.

She's good in her role in shape of water, so it shouldn't really matter what she looks like anyway ;)

Perhaps back in her 20s, but she is the definition of butterface (as her body is VERY good for a 41 year old) :p

She's made to look that way in the film. Note how she starts off looking dowdy, but as the love affair progresses she becomes prettier and better lit/made up in the movie. And obviously on the red carpet she's glammed up some more just to show that she looks different in real life than from her acting roles. I guess she was chosen for the way she looks and the way she manages to act and convey feeling even though she doesn't get many lines at all. I imagine a lot of actors would run away screaming from a part where they can't use words to express themselves.

Can you imagine her part being played by a stunningly beautiful Hollywood actress? It probably wouldn't even make any sense in the context of the style of the movie and what the character is supposed to be.

This is also her from 2017:

Exactly, she's clearly not an ugly woman in that picture. She's made to look dowdy in the film for that role.

But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that ;)

It's all subjective, and I was basing it off of a multitude of google image results, not just the film.

She also looks very similar to someone who I used to work with.

Gents, it's quite clear that the way Sally was presented in Shape of Water - in her brutalism era janitor outfit complete with "I save myself for comrade Stalin and motherland" hair and make up - she was supposed to be asexual to you - you were not supposed to fancy her. That goes for you ladies too - you were not suppose to fancy that green Mr. Phelps. OK?

There wasn't meant to be any sexual attraction for you lot to pick up on in that movie, but who knew that you would hit on a green witch of Oz as long as she had a mop bucket on her head....

Wonder Woman 5/10 it’s was nicely made Gal Gadot was easy on the eye Chris Pine and David Thewlis stole the show. But it was just a bit meh, Wonder Woman was wrong about everything from start to finish and ignored Steve’s advice but that’s ok because she knows she’s right ?? I haven’t seen Justice League yet but it must be a right turkey if this is the best DC film.
I thought although the film was generally well made the fighting CGI wasn’t even up to Matrix standards. The modern films look their best when the largest proportion of practical effects are used and all of the Amazon fights broke the suspension of disbelief for me. What the over powered heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Thor etc need is balanced enemies. The latest Thor film seemed to manage this but Superman and Wonder Woman seem to miss the mark. Wow super powered person beats up conscripts with no feeling of risk... Yawn, then when the super battle turns up she goes from getting smashed to suddenly winning cos of the power of love. I had no emotional investment in the final battle of the hero, where as Steve gets all the real emotional heft. It wasn’t bad but the Misses and I were using our tablets by the end.

That's just what women do.

I think you are generous with 5, I watched it the other night too and thought it was dire, struggled to make it through, so boring.

The Last Jedi

Runined for me by Ray...hammy acting and I just don't believe her at all.

I don't rate her as an actress on any level

She was rubbish in Murder on the Orient Express too.

The film had some good moments...but it was pretty mediocre for me.Plus it was overlong.

6/10

I had the same issue with her. You just never felt she actually believed in what she was doing. Going through the motions.

She's basically got the part because she's pretty. She's not a good actress.

Agreed on the length too, was about half hour too long.

Mom and Dad (2018) - 3/10

An uncomfortable to watch horror film that has an interesting and unique style, but is very much style over substance.

The confused presentation adds to the desperate atmosphere, but overall, the film is too weird and neither the style or premise make up for the basic plot or simple characters.

Acting is hit and miss and it runs out of ideas before the welcome ending.

Lady Bird

A very poignant movie about adolescents, for someone my age Lady Bird (Ronan's character) would almost be how old I was back in 2002 when the movie was set. It brings back not only memories of the period, the music, the Iraq War but what really hits home is the script's little detail of family dynamics, I can see myself as Christine, the fights that she has with her mum I had very similar ones with my father. Wanting to go far away at University. Now years later appreciating where i am from. It totally captures the pain of being a teenager, the sense of finding out who you are.

It is an amazing first screenplay, it reminds me of Richard Linklater's work in a lot of ways.

Love it.

Enjoyed it more than The Shape of Water.

Which makes her all the more grating for me as I do not find her attractive and therefore got the part for no reason at all as far as I am concerned

Whether she's your cup of tea or not, there's no doubting she's an attractive girl.

Poor actress though and I doubt we will see her in too much more of significance.
