What film did you watch last night?

Yeah, only so many hours in a day!

I don't watch normal TV/Sky but have Prime and Netflix (giving Netflix up at the end of the month), hence why I might watch 6/10 and less movies a couple of times.

There's some great looking films/shows that have been out a couple of years now that I've never had the chance to watch yet e.g. the last couple of Star Wars, Dunkirk, Better Call Saul, GoT, to name just a few - as you can probably imagine, I am continually dodging spoilers! :p

Tomb Raider 2018 - 5/10

Wanted to like this more but the plot just didn't flow for me. Alicia Vikander didn't do anything wrong & I actually quite like her as a younger Lara Croft, & the arguments I've read online about her not having enough "up top" to play Lara Croft are just ridiculous, but the story just didn't do much for me & I preferred the first Tomb Raider film as it had a few good one liners thrown in along with plenty of action.
This one just seemed to amble along.

There is potential for the next one to be better now they have introduced the new Lara as such.

Thor: Ragnarok - I actually enjoyed it and the missus even more so.
There're more than enough super hero movies that take themselves far to seriously so to have something that's really quite light hearted and fun once in a while is quite refreshing.

Really enjoyed Annihilation last night. However if I had watched it with the GF I would probably have hated the experience of her whinging about it being slow, confusing and "arty". Glad I watched it though. Alex Garland is fast becoming a name I instantly associate with quality.

Tried watching Baby Driver the other night but ended up turning it off after 50 minutes. What are people finding so good about this film? Does it get better? I've just found it so bland and that's not something I usually find with stuff having Kevin Spacey in. It's very rare that I turn stuff off, so really struggling with this one. Last time I felt this way about a film was Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (the ONLY time I ever walked out the cinema).

Nope it doesn't get any better.

Watch drive if you haven't already, it is a much better film  BD is just a poor man's copy of it.

Tomb Raider (2018) - 7/10

A good adventure film let down by a weak plot which lacks originality.

The plot is serviceable with good characters, great acting and really good character development of the more human Lara Croft.

The action scenes are good, but the CGI is poor and overall, the film is missing the spark that makes it great.

Nowhere near as dark or violent as the game, and don’t bother going to watch it in 3D – apart from 1 scene, there isn’t any.

Tomb Raider 5/10 maybe 6/10

Reasonable action flick/intro to the character but how they absolutely wasted the talent of the actors in it, and the plot holes.

It felt like I was watching an FMV from a game at time* rather than an actual movie. it looked pretty and they got in most of her trademark moves but the story wasn't even as advanced as many video games.

It's a shame as I wanted to like it.

*From the era of games where you basically "played" cut scenes (Night Trap etc).[/B]

I could go all academic and bore, even alienate yet again more people in this thread.

Watch this to get you started....

This film is nuanced...and goes over the head of most people.

Edgar Wright is not just a director...He is a film fan...BD is genius.

None of what he's talking about in that video is particularly nuanced, nor is it likely to go over most people's heads.

It is a good film, not quite great. Some clever editing and original ideas made that film good, but it the story isn't anything spectacular.

Expand on clever editing?

Also tell me why its "not quite" great...

As for original ideas? What is original about it? I can see that the term "originality" would not be the focus of discourse in BD analysis...

As for story?

Its a typical fairy tale...In fact you can tick off each one of the Vladimir Propp character types...But one can do this on any movie...

So if we look at your response...There isn't a lot going on in terms of any key ideas you personally can manifest.

In fact your post is vacuous.

How ironic you should say that. You're a damn troll, so won't be wasting any more time on you...don't ask questions then bloody insult someone at the end. Grow up.

I’m not sure my post was insulting , just highlighting it had generic responses with very little depth and analysis.

Make a point
Provide evidence
Then explain

It’s called P.E.E , what we learnt at school :)

@easyrider

Cheers for the video, I've now watched it. It told me nothing that I hadn't noticed and appreciated in my first 50 minutes with the film. If that's all it's got that makes it great, then I'm afraid I'm not all that interested.

There's nothing "driving" the film forward for me so I think I'll just leave it for another day at some point in the future. It's very likely that I'll come back one day and say "yea, I made a mistake, that was a good film", but I have others that I want to watch and BD has so far failed to make an impression on me, and even alienated me as a viewer to the point I was bored and switched off.
