What film did you watch last night?

A Wrinkle In Time (2018) - 2/10

Visually very colourful and sometimes awe-inspiring, but definitely a case of style over substance.

With a weak plot that descends into nonsensical tripe and some bizarre character choices, the film ends up being too weird to be engaging, with things being weird just for the sake of it – the costumes are a prime example.

The moral messages and acting are ok, but otherwise, it’s a disaster.

Tomb Raider - definitely much better than some of the negative reviews made out. 100 times better than the Jolie version. Some good nostalgic moments if you like the game and a good enough plot point for this genre. Alicia Vikander was pretty good, I was a bit doubtful when she casted but she proved me wrong and got the job done. Much better than I expected. 7/10.

Pacific Rim Uprising - I had no expectations walking into the movie, surprisingly I thought this may have been better than the first one. The effects was great and it was an enjoyable action flick paying homage to the mecha genre. The kids was a bit a weak point I felt but it was enough to fill in the movie. There was a scene tributing to
Gundam
7/10.

Red Sparrow - probably Jennifer Lawerence most immersive role. Pretty slow start as it was a little try hard to build the background however the second half ramps up quite nicely. It wasn't what I expected but if you like spy and subterfuge then this movie should do the trick. Good cast with Joel Edgerton and Jeremy Irons. 7/10.

Pacific Rim Uprising: 7/10

It's about giant robots smashing things through the power of friendship. You can't grade it on any traditional metrics. I think it may just be better than the original

The Mummy (Tom Cruise) - 5/10

Started out well. Had some Uncharted vibes. I think it would have been better without the forced humour which I've noticed is more prevalent with newer Tom Cruise films (Mission Impossibles, Jack Reacher).

Black Panther - 6/10

Visually it was amazing. The film didn't flow for me though. There were large parts of the film where not much was going on. Probably one of my least favourite of the Marvel franchise. Roll on Infinity War!

Everest 5/10.
Looked good but dont know if i was supposed to care about Josh Brolin or Jason Clarke , in the end was rooting for the Russian guy.
Probably would have enjoyed it more if i had read 1 of the books about the expedition.

Remember watching a documentry about a guy who climbed Everst with no legs who was blamed for walking past a dying climber , dont know if this was based on that although i really enjoyed that.

Free Fire (2016)

Can't give a true rating of the movie as I gave up after about 45mins, it seemed to be going nowhere, surprised I managed 45minutes to be honest, from what I watched....lots of people shooting at each other, that was it, I think the movie was trying to be funny but it failed hugely. Based on what I watched I would give it a 1/10, It's very rare I give up on movies but this was just trash.
Wasn't just me then.

I rarely give up on a film, but this one was an exception.

I think it lasted about half an hour before I reached for the remote.
Have you seen Reservoir Dogs? It was a bit of a rehash of that I thought. Not as good, but I think it did the tension well and overall I found it enjoyable.

War Of the Worlds with Tom Cruise is on BBC1 at 10.30pm. I'm fairly sure I've not seen it before but a couple of reviews I've just read on here seem positive so I'm looking forward to it.

Ah, I have seen it before.

Baywatch (2016/17)

Wow what a confusing film, it just doesn’t know what it wants to be. It’s not funny enough to be a decent comedy and the infrequent comedy mixed in with the semi-serious drama, with the Rock playing it serious 90% of the time, just gives it a really odd tone. Not sure what they were trying to achieve.

3/10

Ah, I have seen it before.

You'll be begging for the Martians to disintegrate Dakota Fanning. Her screeching is why I can't watch this film.

Slowly but surely pickaxing my way through my Christmas blu ray collection now, this is one of the few remaining.

I liked it a lot! Pure 80/90s schlock. It's second act drags a wee bit and the last 30 minutes is perhaps a bit too jarring in it's absurdity. I think Mr Yuzna tried to go full 'Reanimtor', but forgot the great mix of tone that made that movie's last half feel so succinct.

Prosthetics and makeup where stunning though. Approaching Rob Bottin levels of gruesome on occasion! Can't give it much higher praise then that!
