What film did you watch last night?

Die Hard - 7.5/10
I've not seen it from start to finish in years. I forgot how good Bruce willies could be. It had character build up for the main and supporting roles unlike new movie.

Victoria and Abdul 6/10
I dont know how accurate it was but it kept me interested, one thing I kept thinking was nothing has really changed in past 100 + years.

I've just finished Annihilation, thought it was pretty good movie and now I really understand why people mentioned the bear.. Wow, didn't see that coming of the scenarios I played in my head.

I watched Ready Player One last night with daughter. A very enjoyable big screen movie. A decent enough cast and lots of action and great visuals. Plenty of laughs and pop culture references. I am sure there are probably some negatives to be found if I thought about it but I wasn't looking for flaws, just enjoying the the ride.

Thor: Ragnarok

I'm loathed to put any money Disney's way these days, what with the LA Times controversy and the whole 'you want our movies? You'll play them longer' mentality (as well as a host of other issues...). But my god, did I have a good time with this.

Maybe it's just the fact that Marvel flicks have been getting increasingly 'cookie cutter' these past few years and this felt like such a breath of fresh air. It's so unlike the previous 2 movies in almost every respect, both in terms of it's general design and overall tone. I'm a big fan of 'What We Do In The Shadows' and you can feel Taika Waititi's style bleed through in almost every scene.

It's still not quite as distinct as I feel these stand alone movies could be though. For all the talk of Hela being one of the 'great' Marvel villains, I thought she was shockingly bland. Cate Blanchetts performance itself is excellent (by god, does she look incredible in EVERYTHING she's in), but her character feels both uninspired and underwritten. I feel that the potential for a cool, solo Planet Hulk movie has been wasted somewhat, simply because there just wasn't enough of that particular story line here.

I sort of just wanted Asgard to be demolished sooner so we could stick with the more interesting setting and set of characters.

Overall though, I loved it to bits!

American Psycho - 7/10

The ending leaves you feeling a bit miffed and thankfully Reece Witherspoon doesn't appear enough to showcase her terrible acting but there are multiple scenes in this that just crack me up, the poses during the sex scene and the business card one are just too good.

Insidious: The Last Key 5/10
The franchise is going down hill.

1408 6/10
Stephen king seam to have a pattern in his writing, it was ok, but not my cup of tea. I like to know a bit more of whats happening and why.

Looking Glass (2018) 4/10

Angry sex scenes, peeping tom self gratification, lesbian domination sessions and a few booby shots.

Sounds great right?

Don't get me wrong, Nicholas Cage is pretty good in it, but the story wraps up far too quickly and leaves way too many unanswered questions. If this was the intention, it worked, but it sucked as well.

A nasty thriller with a very 8mm feel to it, but with zero pay off.

I am disappoint.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) - 5/10

A fun and entertaining if somewhat forgettable action film with a healthy dose of light hearted comedy.

The setting and special effects are good, although it takes far too long to get to the giant robot / alien fight scenes and they aren’t anywhere near as good as in the first film.

The plot is straightforward and the characters are likable, although mostly cliché and the dialogue and tone varies from far too serious to corny.

Gerald's Game - 4/10

That's just over 90 minutes of life I won't get back....and the ending added nothing, almost like they spliced another story into it. I can see the creepiness working as a novel (although this seems to be quite a divisive Stephen King piece), but on screen my interest wasn't held at all.

Tomb Raider

Meh. The game told a better origins story.

It was watchable, but I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone spend their time watching it.

Also, the CGI was as pants as it was in the trailers. Alicia Vikander was however very well suited to the new Lara, and I would watch a sequel if it were made.

Such a shame, I was hoping it was going to be good but I had a feeling this would be the case.

Star wars - last jedi
3/10
I think it looked well, but as with so much big budget films now, they don’t attempt to make things even remotely within their own history.

I still can’t forgive the first film having four or five habitable planets that all got wiped with one superweapon fired from systems away. Its just twaddle.
This one, bombers that in ‘space’ actually bomb from above, what the hell was anyone thinking. Massive opening scene and it just screamed of, wtf? This film clearly isn’t aimed at me, but I spent ages trying to work out who it was aimed at.
The comedy was awfully timed, and reaked of jarjar, even with mini jarjars at one stage.

I actually think this comes close to the worst ever Disney film. I am sure there are worse ones, but they are not springing to mind.

Started watching this the other night. Looks and sounds great in 4k HDR with atmos sound track but the opening scene with the bombers was a face palm time and those blatantly put in the film for merchandising ££££ little creatures on the jedi Island just put me right off watching the rest of the film. It had Disney's stamp all over it.

It didn't have Disney's stamp all over it.
It has the star wars stamp all over it.
With the except of a new hope, there was massive merchandising potential in every film that followed.
This one, bar those unfunny little slapsticks puffs, wasn't just as bad as some.
The film was terrible, conceptually.
The marketing potential in the prequels was considerably worse. I won't blame Disney for trying to get the billions back they paid goitre boy for the franchise, but making a mishmash of a film isn't so good.
That awful bomber scene, just conceptually atrocious. With minimal modification they could have made it actually make sense. I hate this about modern sci-fi films.
I don't care they use force, they make up rules around it etc, but the normal basic rubbish is utterly unforgivable.
