What film did you watch last night?

The Fellowship of the Ring.

I've seen the trilogy before at the cinema when they first came out, but I don't think I've watched any completely all the way through since, because these days I find them a little too child-like in places. I got a fair way into the story but nope, not for me nowadays. Loved the films when they were originally released though.

I watched the whole extended trilogy, for the first time in probably nearly a decade, a couple of months ago. Still love 'em! :)

Already booked for the 1st day. My Odeon has just finished an upgrade to Lux Seating in all screens and Screen 1, which is showing A Quiet Place 2, is now an iSense screen with Dolby Atmos. Of course if it’s as quiet as the first film then Dolby Atmos won’t be that important.

Sadly you won't be watching this soon.

Real shame though, was actually gonna pay for a babysitter so my wife and I could go see it as first film was superb.

Onward (2020) - 7/10

A very traditional adventure quest which has a different setting but doesn’t really use it to best effect.

Not as funny as I was expecting, but its heart is definitely in the right place and the moral message and the story are superbly told.

The animation and voice acting are good, although there weren't any stand out moments, and there was a good mix of supporting characters.

I watched Balls of Fury - It is awful in the best possible way, Christopher Walken doing his best Walken. I highly recommend it for a turn your brain off comedy with some genuinely good dialogue.

Panda's dead!

Aladdin - pretty pointless (but money making) live action remake if the classic animation. Will Smith is no Robin Williams but gives it a go anyway. 3/5

Joker
6.5/10 on Phoenix performance alone.
I can see why Phoenix won an Oscar as it was a superb performance. Shame the film was a bit meh though.

Rise of Skywalker - 9/10

I liked the saga, some films were just disappointing but I enjoyed the universe it creates. This film was predictable, plot holes but I loved it. Fun throughout and lots of throwbacks. Looking forward to watching it again

Jumanji 2 - 7/10

Great family film, some laughs and the old guys in in the game characters were great.

The ending seemed a bit weak and drawn out though - he splatted a Jumanji berry on the main bad guys chest, i would have expected some CGI at that point, but all we got was a bit of sticky juice (oo-er!)

Maybe put the ending in spoilers? I've seen it, so I'm not sure how much it would bother me... but that is literally how they take down the bad guy, so...

The Rock splats the berry weakening the bad guy - i was hoping for maybe a CGI health meter, or CGI explosion/sprite effect when using the berry, it just fell a bit flat.

But Karen Gillan - nom nom nom

Karen is gorgeous!

phew! Thought you had caught the ghey for a moment:

Bloodshot (2020) - 5/10

Derivative, predictable and cliché in plot, premise and delivery, but at least it acknowledges that it is and even works it into the story.

Slow to start and it has a few weak plot points, but the action scenes and special effects are mostly good, if not that exciting.

Its style is also a bit hit and miss, but the augmentations the other characters have look realistic.

The acting’s good, although the characters themselves are paper thin and mostly forgettable, and the comedy character is funny, but tries too hard at times.

Watched The Stand with the Mrs last night as she's never seen it and I thought it would be a good topical film to watch. It's just as amazing as when it came out in the 90's! 8.5/10!

Farmageddon: Shaun the sheep movie

----

A brilliantly light hearted quirky and typically Aardman Studios movie with Shaun the sheep and friends. As a big fan of Shaun the sheep I was excited to see this. The story itself is very loose (even compared to the first Shaun the sheep film) and it just about holds together. I did find certain bits of it pointless and not adding anything and maybe they were added just to pad it out a bit......BUT

What I loved about it (which is the same as Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the sheep etc) is all the tiny little subtle bits of humour which keep you going. Like the rooster holding a coffee mug saying "Nice Pecks" on it :D - good light hearted easy watching. Not bad overall.

The Favourite - another slice of bonkers film making from Yorgos Lanthimos (the director of The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer). Very good historical comedy drama but with a full portion of oddness. All of the leads did a fine job and the cinematography was differ too with quite a bit of fish eye. Would recommend to anyone. 5/5
