What film did you watch last night?

Spenser Confidential (2020) - 6/10

A film that is truly all over the place featuring lots of Boston’s character and culture whilst also acting as a promotional/ego trip for Mark Wahlberg.

The likeable characters are larger than life and very entertaining, but there’s too much style over substance with excessive music and camera angles.

The comical edge keeps things going, but it was never laugh out loud funny.

Sadako vs Kayako

WaT!!! Just.... in a similar manner to my recent David Bowie thread, being a big fan of the horror genre, how the flying **** did I not know this film existed?!

You know the film The Ring, right? You know the film The Grudge, right?

This film is literally The Ring vs The Grudge.

:eek::eek::eek:

Just for that concept alone, it gets 10/10. I’m unable to rate the film anything else. The concept is too good and even if the film was truly terrible, I’d still end up giving it that rating. I can’t help it. I enjoy the concept too much. I rated it that before I even saw the film.

I’m pleased to report that the film is actually quite watchable and it’s pleasing to see the horror icons embrace a goofy side not previously seen. We had popcorn in the cupboard, it was definitely cracked out.

Loved it. Just... I mean what can I say. The Ring vs The Grudge!!!

As for the long debate as to which is the most frightening... even with the silly premise, the Grudge house still provided a few creeps. I’d watch that tape a thousand times over stepping foot in that bad boy.

What a find!!!! :D

Edit: the obligatory Horror Club tag @SixTwoSix and @arc@css :)

Star Wars - Rogue one (4K UHD) - 8/10

First time I’ve watched this since the cinema. It was great and having seen VII, VIII and IX since, I’m amazed that this came out and was a thousands times better and they didn’t employ a similar style and tone for the others. Such a waste.

Looked great in 4k too!

The Lighthouse - wow, odd and different don't really describe this tale of two men in a lighthouse 130 years ago. Black and white, narrow screen and mono sound, it could have been made 80 years ago! Still it had me transfixed. 4/5

The New Mutants - not impressed.

They gave away what was going on real early on, it was overall pretty corny, there was at most one character that I thought was alright, and the special effects were a mixed bag too (can't say more without spoiling it).

That Vader scene at the end though, brilliant.

Richard Jewell - 7/10

A good watch, very interesting story of which I didn't really know anything about. A good example of what still has not been corrected in our (i.e. the world's) media… Trial by media is still a massive issue and this was by all accounts an awful example of it. Great performances, too.

I watched this yesterday and enjoyed it. I didn't know the story at all so was interesting, wonder if he got treat the hero after all what happened.

I think he did, but it's such a shame that he'll never simply be remembered as the guy that saved lives by finding/reporting it. But rather the guy that was proven innocent of it.. eventually :(

Triple Frontier (2019) - 4/10

A run of the mill ‘one last job’ movie which doesn’t really get interesting until the second half.

The ex-military setting and characters backstories have been done many times before and even the surprises in the plot aren’t that unexpected.

It’s functionally entertaining, but apart from the cast, the soundtrack and the scenery, there’s nothing remarkable about it.

Another vote for the Into the Spider Verse. I've been wanting to watch it for ages so pretty excited when it arrived on netflix last week.
I wasn't sure what I'd make of the art style or the different Spider peeps but was fine on all fronts.

Loved it :D

Yeah it was a while back I watched it but it was trippy and pretty cool ... even if some of the spiderman varieties in that seemed like kinda niche ones or however you'd describe them ...

Amazing movie, loved it. I was skeptical of the art style and the framerate of the characters moving but boy it was fantastic.

Doctor Sleep

Second time watching it and the spell was broken a little this time around. Most likely a screenplay issue, but despite it's healthy run time the characters just never gelled for me at all. I like the premise a lot and some of the campiness from the book is pulled back a little which helps, but it just feels very one note from the get go. Definitely Flannigans weakest work to date imo.
