What film did you watch last night?

"The Midnight Sky" on Netflix. Visual beautiful, slow, rather dull and a complete downer.
There are several points which had me utterly WTF-ing. The one on the ice is the worst example. Why is it suddenly sinking? I felt like I'd dozed off for a minute between the previous scene and this one. How do you swim in Arctic waters and then just shrug it off, before surviving a storm with zero gear?
The behaviour of 2 male characters at the end was ridiculous. These are trained astronauts and they just throw their lives away.
But the biggest WTF moment came at the end when I was left utterly speechless at the incompetence of the casting agent. Did they really think that random guy looked ANYTHING like George?! No wonder my wife and I were going "who the hell is that guy?" throughout.

Watched this tonight. Abysmal film.

Was a complete chore to watch.

Almost watched “Nativity”, with Martin Freeman, as I’d seen 5 minutes of it on TV while the enemy was foraging for Brussels Sprouts in Waitrose, so I downloaded it as it looked reasonably good.
I say almost watched it, she Googled it as neither of us had heard of it.
When she discovered that Alan Carr was in it, she gave a sharp intake of breath, and said, “Seriously? I don’t think so!”

I saw the second half of it when my kids were watching (they've seen it a few times and seem to love it and its sequels).

It was (just about) passable family entertainment. I was mostly interested in it for the Coventry landmarks, having lived there as a student.

Didn’t know there was an alternate ending for I Am Legend.

Watched it yesterday and got very confused for the last 5 minutes as I started doubting my memory a lot!

Alternate ending is far better and more thought provoking, assume it's the

One where he realises he's the boogeyman, the 'legend' they fear that hunts them while they're sleeping and hiding from the light and no stupid sacrifice ending

Bone Tomahawk (2017)

Being a massive fan of Tombstone (1993) where Kurt Russell plays legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, I thought this was going to be a half decent western. Popped it on last night; its awful. Simply turns into a shock film. Whether Russell liked the idea of combining movie genres, horror and a western?

Shallow plot, essentially, cannibalistic Indians where the chief resembles the Predator! It comes across as a low budget film made worse when the set looks like those Disney World rides (spray painted foam).

2/10.

Uncle Frank - 7.5/10

Enjoyable comedy drama about the discrimination and then acceptance of a gay Professor by his redneck family after the death of his abusive father. Set in the 70's and with a roadtrip type of style to it, I'd say if you liked Green Book you'd really like this too.

Cats (2019)

Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat jumped onto my car stereo on shuffle today and I quite enjoyed the sing-song, so I decided to give this much loathed film a whirl, having never seen the show.

My initial thoughts were that it was visually HORRID. One of the most miserable looking films I have ever seen. Something about the CGI aesthetic of the actors and the CGI outdoor environments was extremely jarring and unpleasant. If I wasn’t in the mood for trying to enjoy it, I would have absolutely hated this film. It hit its low point quite early (with that dreaded Gumby Cat number - with some really unappealing visuals) and from then on steadily progressed until I ended up quite enjoying myself.

There was almost no sense to be made of it. Just full on weird, with a few catchy tunes to enjoy.

Not sure I could recommend it to anyone but if you are in a mood for something weird and want to enjoy yourself and have a sing song then it’s quite fun.

Altogether now.... oh, well, I never have I ever, heard of a cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistopholeeeeeeees :D

WW1984 - Utter garbage. Seemed for a while that it was going to be a bit of a hamfisted feminist narrative but that was soon dropped for just straight up garbage in every department. Continuity, plot, story, pacing, CGI and length.

3/10 and that might be generous.

Glad I'm not the only one who though WW84 wasn't very good. DC proving once again that they're rubbish at the cinematic universe.

This was next level rubbish. The first WW was pretty good and I haven't had any particular issue with any of their other films. Not great but not awful. This was a mess and thats nothing to do with DC. Thats on the director etc.

Soul (Pixar)

Remarkable film. A truly excellent effort and entirely free (IIRC) of the usual Pixar-twee crap that spoils their films.

I only have one verrrry minor nitpick that made me pull a face:

... the hippy meditator people were just out of place and a misstep.

But the good was sooooo good I’m giving it 10/10. Can’t think of a better Pixar film off hand. A truly fantastic and ‘relevant to modern life’ message too.

Wonderful art style in places.

A real treat this film, one to watch.

I've found most DC films to be pretty mediocre, but as you say the first Wonder Woman wasn't that bad; one of their better efforts. This sequel was just pretty pants though. I didn't care about any of the characters or anything they were doing. 2 1/2 hours that I could have spent doing something much more useful, like picking my nose ...
