What film did you watch last night?

Thief (1981)

Bought this from Arrow Video based on recommendations here.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. But like a lot of films I've watched recently from the 70' and 80's, they seem to suffer from slightly dodgy acting and dialogue.

James Caan was great, as good as he was in The Godfather. But Tuesday Weld was probably the worst of the whole cast.

The cinematography was mostly superb and some of the shots would've have been truly inovative and like nothing you'd seen before, if you watched it back when it was released.

I actually think this would make a great 4k UHD release. HDR or Dolby Vision would really make the visuals a joy to watch. Especially some of the night time scenes with the wet roads and neon lights. Reminded me of the start of John Wick 2.

Overall a decent watch and I don't regret buying the Blu-ray. On the other hand my wife hated it. But I don't think she likes Michael Mann films at all, since she hated Collateral and Heat.

7/10

He was pretty big for Kingdom (2014 to 2017) where he played an ex-MMA fighter. I don't know if he trained for that perhaps? I don't actually remember him in Winter Soldier... I need to watch it again :)

I've had Kingdom on my watch list for a while, would you recommend it, based on our shared tastes?

He's one of the Shield/Hydra operatives who eventually becomes Crossbones at the start of Civil War.

Yeah, I would say so. I think I had a few points that made me question a few things, but overall it was a good watch. You'll recognise one of the sons from Justified too, Reylan's nemesis in the final season, and he's an excellent character in this.

Omg...the gunslinger?

He's on the thumbnail for Kingdom on netflix and knew i recognised the face but couldn't figure out where from.

Boss Level - 7/10

A guy is caught in a time loop with the same day repeating until he dies and awakes at the start of the day all over again. Great action set pieces, hits the ground running and keeps up the momentum all the way through. Really enjoyed it and was lots of fun, just imagine Groundhog Day with a special forces operative learning every scenario day after day. Humour was on point too.

Also when did Frank Grillo get jacked, don't remember him being this big in Winter Soldier or Purge.

That was great! Watched it last night and really enjoyed it.

I enjoy a good Groundhog Day/time loop film and this one was done really well. The last one recommended on here was Palm Springs, which tbh we thought was dire.

I really enjoyed Palm Springs, better than Boss Level IMO. Boss Level was very good though, and worth a watch.

I've not heard of Palm Springs or may have done and it's passed me by, whats the premise?

Logan (my second but my wife's's first viewing). Still just as good, if only they had put this much effort into other Wolverine entries. One thing that I did notice on the second viewing and made me laugh - their use of green screen for one of the driving scenes. It was so awfully comical :D.

Love story + ground hog day. If you like Andy Sanberg humour, you should be fine. I liked it/like him but quite forgettable - hence my lack of detail in describing the premise.

Palm Springs looks watchable enough and keeps the missus happy by randomly having a romantic movie to watch for a change. Also quite like him in Brooklyn 99.

Requiem for a Dream. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/

One I started watching a long while back and nearly switched off a few seconds in after recognising the opening scene; I have a habit of watching something too late at night or when too tired and if it doesn't leave a good enough impression, then quite often I don't go back to it. Sometimes I even forget I've taken a look at a particular movie.

However, I'm glad I stuck with it. Some of it made me chuckle like the editing style and sound used, whereas other parts were more sobering.

Requiem is a tough watch. I've never revisited after initial viewing probably a good 15 years ago. I am still haunted by some of the stuff that happens. Particularly how the grandmother goes off the rails.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Ben Affleck directs his brother in a story about an abducted child. Supporting cast includes Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.

It was good but never great. I felt like it needed to turn up the tension more as the film went on and keep turning it.

Still very watchable and comes in at just under two hours, so never feels like it dragged on.

One of my favourite films, seen it many many times and cemented my view of Aronofsky being one of my favourite directors.

I really like Samberg but thought he did quite well in toning it down a bit for Palm Springs? My girlfriend hates his type of American over-the-top comedy like in B99 but she rather enjoyed Palm Springs. Decent effort from him, I think.
