What film did you watch last night?

The Gray Man (2022) - 4/10

Stylish but about as cliché and predictable as you can get with its plot and premise.

The set pieces are somewhat different but it is pretty boring even with all the globetrotting and big stars.

The non-stop action in the second half (from Prague onwards) ramps up the energy and entertainment value considerably, but it goes over the top and becomes preposterous, especially Gosling’s flat response to the events.

The Man From Toronto (2022) - 3/10

A watchable mistaken identity caper with low effort put in all round.

The CGI is poor and cheap looking, the comedy is humorous and silly but rarely funny and the film is too long.

The plot and action is passable and Hart is likeable if typecast as the loser, but there’s little thrills or depth to keep you engaged.

Single Black Female - 3/10 - A race-swap "made for TV" remake of the far superior Single White Female from '92 starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh (I give it a 7/10 - I really liked it). This version doesn't really have any "stars" as such, other than the ex-Aunt Viv from The Fresh Prince and a couple of "only done TV" actresses in the main roles (both very large ladies so a body positive film) and either that lack of "Film vs TV" acting experience, or the awful script, or both really hurts the film and hammers home that it's just a bad "Hallmark Channel" type film especially when combined with the very low production values. There's one or two good scenes by Amber Riley (The "Stalker") but overall it's just a sad (and I'm only assuming this) cash-grab based off the interest in race-swapping yet another well known Film.

For me I'd say you'd be better off spending your time watching the original than this.

If you have nothing to do it's ok to watch

Breakdown 1997, mans wife goes missing, film follows kurt Russell in his search for her, really enjoyed it, 7/10. Now on to escape from new york
Always really enjoyed this film, although for a Kurt Russell movie, seemingly slipped under the radar following his blockbuster turn as Wyatt Earp in Tombstone (1993) which is epic!

JT Walsh carried such menace - another recommendation and lesser known nineties thriller is 'Red Rock West' with Nicolas Cage and JT.

Cheers, will check out red rock west, yea JT Walsh was great at playing villians, shame he passed away quite young and didnt get a lot of mainstream praise

Beast (2022) - 6/10

A mostly traditional ‘creature feature’ elevated by its majestic South African setting and magnificent creatures.

The main plot serves its purpose and I can see why the family strife was included, but the girls’ characters were quite annoying and the dream sequences were unexplained and out of place.

There’s enough good acting, tension and great lion CGI for the film to do its job as enjoyable entertainment with a mild moral message, even if the ending was (expectedly) far-fetched.

I am looking forward to watching Best.

I saw something interesting the other day that said Idris Elba's own real life daughter audition for a role as his on screen daughter, but the director didn't feel there was a good chemistry between the two. That must hurt.

Top Gun Maverick - 7½/10

Super cheesy in places, a little predictable, but good fun. I probably don't scores as high as some as I just can't remember the original, so anything it would score for nostalgia is lost on me...
