What film did you watch last night?

What? It's bloody excellent.
I am probably being a little harsh so tweaked me score - I think because I paid Amazon and should've waited until it was free!

If I was much younger I would've enjoyed more. Just not for me, just way to OTT, but I guess that's the point!

A big fan of Odenkirk though and as said, makes this film - other than this it sits like a Van Damme/Seagal/Neeson cheese film (to me).

Solo - 5/10 (as a huge fan of the novels, much lower for anyone else) - A "sci-fi" film based on the amazing novel "Weapon" by Robert Mason, who is famous for writing "Chickenhawk" about his experience as a Vietnam Helicopter Pilot.

A robot, Solo is designed in the mid 1990's to replace human soldiers in battle. It is humanoid in shape, in order to allow it to use all the military vehicles and equipment human soldiers do. Solo is capable of feats of great speed, strength and endurance. Solo's AI begins to display what his designers consider aberrant behaviour. He begins to question and occasionally refuse his orders so, on training mission in Nicaragua when he refuses to kill an innocent, Solo is attacked by his own side and believed to be destroyed. He is discovered by a group of Nicaraguan villagers who although initially fearful of him, come to trust the robot and depend on his protection from local soldiers who attack their village.

So whilst the novels are very much loved, the film is punished by being a very low budget affair. It stars Mario Van Peebles who doesn't have the acting ability to make "Solo" feel like the "lost child" that the novels make him out to be and instead tries to perform in a Terminator style which badly misses the point and isn't very good. There's a couple of bright patches however, William Sadler is epic as always as the "bad guy", the nasty US soldier sent to kill Solo and anyone else who saw it no questions asked, and an epic practical stunt where an entire cliff face/runway brought down. Sadly the film, as per usual, just couldn't compete with a novel which has far more time to set up what/who Solo is at a philosophical level (which is a big part of the novels), rather than having 90mins to cram everything in and the 2nd half just falls apart rapidly.

Breakdown 1997, mans wife goes missing, film follows kurt Russell in his search for her, really enjoyed it, 7/10. Now on to escape from new york
Thanks, never seen Breakdown so will watch that tonight. The premise sounds good. Escape from New York is a classic. Snake from Metal Gear Solid is homage to him in that film, if that wasn't obvious haha

22 Jump Street 7/10

Stupid fun, giggle moments. Just as good as the first one.

Us. 5/10.

Watched this in preparation for Nope tomorrow night. I wasn’t a fan of Get Out, and Us is even worse.
Worrying that I’ve read Nope is awful too… what have I let myself in for! :o

Captain Fantastic 2016 Viggo Mortensen Inde style movie about a hippy father raising his kids off grid then having to re-integrate into society following death of the childrens mother. If you liked Peanut Butter Falcon or perhaps CODA then I guess you would also enjoy this too. 8/10

Day Shift.

Watchable Netflix fare at best, mindless dross at worst. Apparently cost $100 million, just like The Gray Man, I can't see where the money went.

4/10

When you consider the same production company made three John Wick films for $140 million or Atomic Blonde for $30 million or Nobody for $16 million. Netflix really are paying over the odds for very mediocre content at best or getting royally screwed at worst.

Interceptor (2022) - 6/10

An enjoyable and surprising action film in many ways, even if there isn’t much originality.

The plot is entertaining and wouldn’t be out of place in a Tom Clancy story with its American militaristic patriotic zealotry, although the misogyny and political topics are a bit on the nose.

The no-nonsense female lead does well overall and with the action and drama, although the special effects look cheap and there could have been more action and thrills in the middle.

The villain is initially a bit boring but comes into his own and the Hemsworth cameo is good fun, if ultimately pointless.
