What film did you watch last night?

Cop Land (1997)

I don't think I've seen this since I first watched it on VHS when it was first available on home video.

Still a great watch with probably one of Stallone's best performances and a supporting cast that's more like a who's who great actors that are all on their game.

8/10

I wanted to take my 9 year old to that? ... think he would be ok with it? ie not too violent/nudity or swearing?
No nudity, no swearing (that I recall). Violence consists of Godzilla on the rampage, occasionally picking up the odd person in his mouth and looking menacing and peeved off. No worse than a Jurassic Park film if that helps?

Its a wonderful life - easy 9/10

Me and the mrs watched this for the first time, what a great feel good movie. We've started watching some classic movies that neither of us have seen before, casablanca was average at best, breakfast at tiffanys was terrible but this totally made up for it.

Society of the Snow on Netflix. Very good retelling of the Uruguayan plane crash in the Andes in '72. Bit longer than Alive, so if you want something a bit faster paced (and you don't like subtitles) then stick with Alive. 8/10

Followed by Never Rarely Sometimes Always. A look at the measures some women have to go through to access abortion in the United States. Worth watching. 8/10

The Happening

I’d heard for years that this was truly awful but also that it was perhaps a deliberate troll / comedy film…

You should watch his comedy The Happening

Intrigued, I had to give it a whirl!

Yeah, a ‘terrible troll comedy’ is about right. I thought it was hilarious. There is just no way that these performances with this dialogue are intended to be serious.

Wahlberg, Zooey and their friend could not be more miscast. It honestly feels like 3 non actors giving their first reading of lines they have just read. It’s totally bizarre - a play on the whole ‘superstar playing an unlikely role’? I’m not sure! The romance subplot is laugh out loud ridiculous.

But the deliberate comedy moments are few and far between, with most of the film being played pretty straight. So I’m really not sure if it’s supposed to be a troll or not. Maybe that in itself is the joke?

Either way, I enjoyed myself far more than I should have.

7/10 from me because it was hilarious.
2/10 from wife :D

I’d personally say the themes of this (Godzilla minus one) were much more mature than say, Jurassic park. There is some PTSD and war related stuff, including using the use of kamikaze pilots… dealing with family deaths. So there’s lots of menacing themes even if the actual on screen violence is limited.

I actually thought that the ‘large scale’ destruction scenes were a little ominous and harrowing, personally, with people falling off buildings etc. Although Godzilla himself is so silly looking it sort of balances out… for an adult.
