What film did you watch last night?

Predator 2 6/10. Felt it needed a rewatch after The Critical Drinker recommended it as an underrated sequel. Wasn't as great as I remember but not terrible by any means. I am blasting "Hyper On Experience - Lord Of Null Lines (Foul Play Remix)" as I type this, though.

Predator 2 is a weird film to rate, your Die Hard 2's/Ghost buster 2's are great films, they just happen to be follow ups to all time classics. Predator 2 is a fun film and I will always watch it after watching the first film but I just don't think its any where near the same quality as the first.

What a derivative, nonsensical, uninspired, unoriginal and unimaginative load of ****

I swear this must have been written by AI. No writer could in all good conscience write this ****

1/10

Even the ******* CGI was atrocious.

The House that Jack Built (2018)

A serial killer, who commits various murders over a 12 year period from the late 70's into the 80's. Recounts some of them in a series of flashbacks to an unseen (until the epilogue) person named Virgil.

Brutally violent and very difficult to watch at times.

I can't say that I "enjoyed" the film, that would be the wrong word. It actually felt more like watching a documentary on a serial killer at times. So I guess what kept me watching was a morbid curiosity more than anything else. As a consequence I'm not going to give it a score.

I also decided to watch Night of the Living Dead last night, my recent 28 days watching got me on a bit of a zombie kick. I've seen the original before so I thought I'd try the 1990 remake this time. I can't remember the original well enough to compare scene to scene but overall it was really good. Did miss the original's ending though.

Poor Things (2023) - 9/10

Like nothing I’d ever seen before. The voyage of discovery plot has lots of sex and intellectual conversations but also plenty of humour within its disturbing topics and whilst a longish film, it never dragged.

The setting conveys a dreamlike world with its palette of colours and steampunk contraptions and the blend of CGI with the opulent interiors was seamless.

All the acting performances were superb and the use of the weird little musical pieces and fisheye camera lens added to the bizarre atmosphere.

Ghosted - 4/10. Pretty bang average movie. Started out interesting but then flopped into a generic b movie. Even with a lot of surprising cameos couldn't help it improve.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

The dialogue and acting are a product of its time and even Charlton Heston doesn't hold up so well. But it's still an enjoyable film for me, probably because it's a series of films I grew up watching on TV, as well as the TV series itself.

A generous 6/10

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)

Don't know how I've never heard of this, considering the critical acclaim it received.

It's a non linear story of a jewelry store robbery that goes wrong. With some parts going back in time or repeatedly shown from another perspective.

Really enjoyed this and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was as good as ever. With great support from Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney.

8/10

Dawn of the Dead (original)

Still a great film although the makeup and practical effects are absolutely dreadful in places. Luckily what makes the film great doesn't suffer from age, the pacing and blend of moments of levity mixed with the horror and despair are really well done, perhaps the best of any zombie movie.
