What film did you watch last night?

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) - 5/10

Pretty much what was expected with lots of Kaiju action and big, destructive fight scenes. The three plotlines each have their merits and tie together nicely, but it did slow the pace in the middle and the big showdown at the end felt a bit anticlimactic. Most of it was a bit silly, but it was entertaining and fun with good special effects, plenty of action and ample light-hearted moments. The human characters were annoying but bearable but the spectacle of the setting and human side of Kong made up for it. It’s a great world they’ve created with Monarch and Hollow Earth, but there is only so much you can get out of the overall premise.

Ferrari (2023)

As a motorsport fan this should've been my kind of film, but I just found the whole thing a bit slow a boring.

The other problem is the focus on such a short period in Ferrari's life, when a broader telling of more of his life could've made the film more dramatic and interesting.

Acting and production values were a positive, but many of cast had so little to do or say, that they may as well have been paid extras, rather than named actors.

4/10

Green Book. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. Pretty good. Say 6.5 out of 10. Having watched this and Bohemian Rhapsody I'm not quite sure how Rami Malek won the best actor Oscar ahead of Viggo.

24 Hour Party People

Liked the style of this film. A good trip down the Manchester music scene back when music was music, conversations were unfiltered and everyone had a cigarette in their hand at all times.

8/10

1) cocaine bear.
it's a black comedy and I loved it. 9/10

utterly bonkers film. (very) loosely based on a true story about a black bear which gets hooked on coke which was dropped by a drug smuggler

2) Gone girl.
getting on a bit now. I put it off as I read the book after it came out so needed to wait a good few years. a wife goes missing and the husband is on the hook for her murder, but he claims to be innocent.

slow to get going but a better 2nd half. OK not brilliant. 7/10

Headshot (2016) - 7/10

It’s your standard story of an amnesiac anti-hero, a damsel in distress and a charismatic ruthless villain.

The premise and mix of languages is odd but the mean and moody style is good and the music adds to the setting.

Gory and violent but the special effects look cheap and the fast fight scenes, whilst entertaining, are a bit silly and not that smooth.

Some bad editing and little backstory to the characters gives the dramatic moments less impact than they should have, but overall, it’s an enjoyable action flick.

But that's why it's so funny! The campfire/bean scene used to have me crying, showed it to my kids and not even a giggle :(

"Candygram for Mongo"

After I watch a film I always read it's Wikipedia entry.

I reckon they edited out the best line from the film.

Bart's final line during Lili's seduction: "I hate to disappoint you, ma'am, but you're sucking my arm."

Now that had me crying with laughter.

The Northman 7 / 10
Looked pretty in places but prefer Eggers more independent efforts.

Sly, on Netflix, more of a documentary than a film but it's as long as a film. Sylvester Stallone talking through his life, I found it really interesting, not knowing much about him other than his films. You get to see why he did what he did rather than what he did, the latter is what you normally see on a documentary.
