What film did you watch last night?

Woman of the Hour 7.5/10

I've always had a soft spot for Anna Kendrick but don't end up seeing a lot of things she's in because...well she seems to star in a lot of bad films. That's why I was happy to see that not only is this one getting good reviews but she directed it! It's a great effort for a debut, well paced and suitably unsettling.

We watched this at the weekend too, and we thought similar to you. We'd give it a slightly higher rating, 8 / 10.
It took me a long time to piece it all together, but I'm thinking it was intentional to be so fragmented until the end ?

A quiet place day one... and agree it could have been much better, wish they made a more horror genre off it and made it 18+

Its like they tried to make it pg or something

I found the British bloke in that so annoying. He was the sort of crying / snivelling character you expect to die off pretty quick but he kept living.

It's not a good film and doesn't fit with the style of the other 2.

Moonage Daydream (2022) - 7/10

Profound and moving but also very weird, but that’s just to be expected from Bowie.

It’s a psychedelic journey of a rock icon exploring his personal observations and creative process rather than a factual documentary of his greatest hits, but there’s still plenty of great music, interview and live performance footage to enjoy.

The ideas of constant change and the quest for one’s own identity and purpose have never been more relevant than they are today, and his impact on multiple generations cannot be ignored.

As for the film, it has little structure, mostly being a scattering of images and the differing audio levels made it hard to follow at times. Like most documentaries, it also skims over his later career and easily could have been longer.

Jigsaw (2017) 6.5/10

Not seen anything from the Saw franchise for a while but always enjoyed them. Classic case of chasing the twist of the first one, but still a watchable franchise, they just fell off my radar.

Threw this one on as we're in spooky season and didn't disappoint. Twist caught me off guard as well, so that was a nice change of pace!

Terrifier 2

Oh boy… what on earth was this :p

First, the bad. It’s really long and very few ‘silly gore’ films, if any, can solidly entertain for that long. The long end credits scene is particularly stupid and, in truth, unwelcome by that point. The film also has an 80s aesthetic, plus it ‘very obviously’ takes place at Halloween, and both these things feel really done to death by now.

Then, the good. All the ‘non-gore’ stuff is… really quite fab?! What a step up compared to the first film in terms of quality. Great characters.

The film itself also looks beautiful, I don’t know what filters it has on or whether it was shot on a type of film but it really genuinely feels like it WAS filmed in the 1980s, but with a super neat image. I’d say it was probably one of my favourite looking films in memory!

The gore itself is pretty brutal and this often balances pretty well with the humour… but some people would find it too much.

Overall I’d say this was pretty solid. If it wasn’t for the length (which you should be able to get through as it’s very well made), plus the overdone Halloween themes, I’d say this was one of the best made horror films I’ve seen in some time.

7.5/10

Remember (2015) brilliant movie with late Christopher Plummer.

Also watched this and we really enjoyed it.

A Holocaust survivor with dementia and set of written instructions from his friend, tracks down the block fuhrer that murdered his family.

Christopher Plummer is excellent.

I definitely did not see the twist coming that's revealed at the film's conclusion

8/10

All star cast. One of my top 10 movies.

Last night I saw a preview of Super/man: The Christopher Reeve Story - 9/10

A really well put together documentary, about Reeve's career, family, accident and eventually death and legacy. Interviews with family, friends and lots of home video footage.

Won't lie though it had me in tears at points. Just so heartbreaking what happened to him. 20 years since his death too.

I loved that film. The ending really set it for me. Stuck with me for a while too.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

A pleasingly short film detailing a short time period with a small cast in just one location. Lean, in all ways!

It’s quite good. It maintains a reasonably good mood of curiosity and suspense and the two leads are interesting to watch.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the most satisfying payoff. There is an oddly jarring fire effect that marks the decline and from then onwards things start to become a bit goofy.

Worth a watch just to see how ‘less can be more’ but it falters by failing to stick to that premise.

6.5/10 (but 8/10 for the first 2/3rds)

Dead Man Down (2013)

Revenge thriller, with a convoluted plot.

It wasn't until about twenty minutes in that we realised we'd seen it before. But since neither of us could remember much, we carried on until the end.

It's not a great film, but it keeps you interested enough to stick with it. There are definitely pacing issues and the ending is weak and predictable.

5/10

Alien:Romulus

7/10 definitely a good addition to the series and I thought going back to the more gritty settings of the older films was good. And it seems that the Alien:Isolation game has had some influence on the set design. Downside generally is that you know where these films are going now so it isn't as suspenseful.

Bit of an old man rant this but the cast are far too good looking and healthy to be essentially slaves to Weyland Yutani living on a planet with no sunlight, this also happens in other films.

Also, having a CGI Ian Holm android annoyed me as it is obviously CGI and the technology needs to be better before this starts to become a regular thing
