What film did you watch last night?

Green Border - 6.5/10

Polish film based around the plight of refugees on the Belarus/Polish border being used as political, and literal, footballs between the two states.

Told in various chapters portraying the humanitarian aspect of the plight of the refugees and everyone involved, it's naturally quite bleak but not overwhelmingly so.

Watched the Iron Claw last night, didn't know a jot about it before watching. Was pretty damn depressing lol. Some great performances, Effron was fantastic. I think it felt like they tried to cram too much story in at times, there wasn't as much character development as it needed and parts of it felt like going down a bullet list of 'events' as it were.

Doomsday - 7/10

Not seen this in a long time. Really entertaining post apocalyptic film, made more so by being set in the UK. Crazy characters and some wonky special effects are part of its charm. The 4k release is a really decent transfer as well.

Alien: Romulus https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18412256/

As a film in its own right, I enjoyed it a great deal! However, the characters in it did little for me, with Andy being by far the best out of the bunch, IMO.
To be fair, as the film progressed, one or two of the other cast members did ingratiate themselves to a certain extent, with the leading lady doing a pretty good job overall.

My nephew had a school trip to Bruges yesterday, so of course it reminded me of the best film of the city, In Bruges. Not sure I've watched it at all in the past 15 years but still it has great writing and was perfectly executed. Like a ... fairytale.

A great day this has turned out to be. I'm suicidal, me mate tries to kill me, me gun gets nicked and we're still in ******* Bruges!

Venom: The Last Dance (2024) - 3/10

The weakest of the series, Venom deserved a better send-off and the other symbiotes deserved more screen time.

The plot is contrived ridiculousness which was hard to take seriously and the film tried to fit too much in, bringing in lots of new characters and ideas but never using them.

Combined with rehashed scenes and the almost pointless inclusion of characters from earlier films, it ends up being tonally inconsistent, jumping frequently from silly to serious to daft to drama.

The whole production felt cringey with awkward dialogue, it lacked the humour of the earlier films, instead going for a more heartfelt approach which was weak and shallow, and some of the action scenes looked awful.

The creature special effects were great, but their seeming invulnerability made little sense and the human ‘villains’ were badly portrayed.

Black Canary or Canary Black (or pick any other 2 words)
5/10

Bog standard forgettable super secret agent getting betrayed. You can pretty much write it as it goes, there are very few real surprises.

MadS

A teenager who stops off to see his dealer to test a new drug before heading off for a night of partying. On the way home, he picks up an injured woman and the night takes a surreal turn.

Thought this was a excellent horror. Solid and very well made - filmed in a single shot it seems! Couldn't see any cuts.

Saw 3 (2006)

Unfortunately after watching the second film, my wife still wanted to carry on watching the rest of the series.

There's barely 30 minutes worth of script in the entire runtime and the rest is padded out with flashbacks and scenes from the previous films. And of the 30 minutes of "new" material there is, non of it is worth watching.

Quite how this series carried on after this dross is a mystery. That is until you see box office versus the budget.

2/10

Beetlejuice 2: Did not complete it. Dunno what it was but something felt off but maybe nostalgia was getting the better of me. Made it about halfway through and binned it. I'm surprised Jeffrey Jones' character and likeness was used so much, because, you know..

Transformers one 7/10

Really liked it, didn't watch trailer as I just heard bad things.
Usuall tropes blah blah but it was a nice change to actually see no humans and just bots and how the two main characters split. Animation also let's unique transformations and effects which look bad ass.
