What film did you watch last night?

Was in the mood for a dreadful b-movie style horror film tonight, and once I saw the synopsis for Margaux I couldn't resist.

Are you too, afraid of new technologies like A.I., Smart Homes and...3D Printing?
Do you want a cast of characters that can be summed up by a 3 word stereotype?
Do you want to hear the original voice of Siri saying "I got you girlfriend"?
Do you want to see some of the worst CGI you have ever seen in a modern movie?

Well then this is the film for you!

7/10 as a dreadful horror film (kills were kind of boring, characters were abysmal, CGI was painful)
2/10 as an actual film

Grave of the Fireflies (on Netflix)

Animated film from Studio Ghibli about two young children in Japan dealing with life in WW2.

My first time seeing this. Yup, it lives up to its reputation as being a heartbreaker. Very sad.

I loved the animation - such detailed backgrounds against (comparatively) very minimalistic characters.

Well worth a watch… although, uh, maybe not at a party.

9/10

Glad your finally experienced it. Remember watching this as a kid and I was distraught in the final act. One of first anime's that made me upset.

Hugh Grant
this film is basically a vehicle to have a discourse about religion, it's dubbed as a horror, but I'd label it more as thriller Horror, yes, I believe there is a difference, it's not a slasher anyway.
I'm not going to worry about putting a potential spoiler here, because what I'm going to say is in the trailer, and I presume that most people will have seen the trailer at the cinema or at home..
.. a lot of the move is about belief being the main topic
it is actually a pretty grown up conversation about theology, it's about time we had a film like it, and I'm positive that it will become a cult classic,
Hugh is pretty fantastic, once again finding new higher gears out of his old gearbox, it becomes more, and more apparent, with his most recent choice of roles, that he is, in fact, a very good actor
I think that I am realising that every new character that he is playing seems almost effortless, like he is just playing himself, so I'm starting to think that there is a lot of himself in every character, the naughty king in dungeons, and dragons, the slighty gay, deviant in the gentlemen as fletcher, and now the creepy guy into religion
all in all this was an enjoyable movie, even for my mother, who will still probably have a nightmare about it at some point!
it's a thinker movie, and I know that we got our money's worth out of the film because we will be thinking, and talking about the film for days, if not a week!
definately can recommend, some of it is left to interpretation, of what you believe, esp at the end , I nodded off a little before the last sceen/shots, but mum filled me in, and I've looked it up on the eb now too
but I thik the ending is quite cute how it depends what you believe your inturpretation to be at the end of a movie about belief, it's not a totally unknown ending, it is satidfying enough, esp when you come to your own idea of what the ending is all about
I definately am left with a few question about what was in the movie, and what happened at the end
an easy 9/10 from me!
recommended, see it while it is in the cinema!

Bird - Gritty, coming of age type film about a 12 year old girl growing up in a squat/tough conditions in Kent. Barry Keoghan is good in it as her father who is basically a teenager himself and how she meets 'bird'. Pretty good. 8/10

Gremlins 2: The New Batch (rented from Apple Store)

More Gremlins… in a very grey New York building.

Uh, not so great. Fleetingly very funny, but not often. Lots of meta humour / 4th wall breaking that was probably very fresh at the time but generally feels dated and is sometimes cringe.

The puppet work, sometimes great, is also frequently distracting.

Mostly, it was like watching a comedian that isn’t funny.

4/10

Secrets & Lies (1996)

A film I'd heard about before, but never seen it.

Feels more like something that would've been more widely seen if it had it been a mini series.

Either way, it's a very well made film, the writing and acting is superb.

7/10

Mike Leigh is a great director, Life is Sweet & Naked are excellent as well. His writing style is get all his actors together and improvise a script (simplified explanation of the process he actually uses).

The Last voyage of the Demeter , 8/10

Was wondering how you could make a 2 hour film from a chapter of Dracula , Log of the Demeter : Varna to Whitby . which is about 1 page of the book .
Better than the Salems Lot remake , hope Nosferatu is just as good.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Another unnecessary sequel that you know is going to be rubbish, but curiousity gets the better of you.

While you can appluade the production design, the use practical effects over CGI, Micheal Keaton's performance and Danny Eflman's score. The actual film is tedious, boring, unoriginal, not funny at all.

And considering Jeffery Jones' character was killed off because he's a registered sex offender, why have half the film's runtime devoted to it?

I also question Winona Rider's acting ability, both my wife and I agree she was utterly terrible in this.

3/10

Interesting.

Not watched this in many years. But watched some of the 4k of 1 yesterday.

All I can remember of 2 is the various things the gremlins dress up as.....
Probably doesn't bode well for the rewatch !

Watched the Day Of The Jackal film on ITVX (6/10), will try to find the Jackal next, for a more entertaining watch.

I’d forgotten how slow films were back then, but I didn’t feel like I was sat there for 2 1/2 hours.

Always nice to see the quality that’s reproduced from the old film before we went digital.
