What film did you watch last night?

Funnily enough, I literally just finished the first film. Never seen it before somehow. I’ll need to check out this jump scare which I also had read is up there as one of the best.

Anyway.

The Exorcist - 6.5/10

Personally didn’t think it was all that great. I’m sure it was scary and ‘better’ at the time of its release. But it’s dated quite badly, at least from the make up of Regan and I found it a little slow.

Oof, that’s a little low! In fairness, I haven’t seen it for some time but I do recall it being surprisingly ‘shocking’ with its content even by modern standards. It must have been outrageous back in the day!

Terrified - 8/10

Great recommendation @Nitefly! Some very convincing effects in this one (although a couple of dreadful ones like the final shot lol) and a really convincing sense of unease.

Woo - glad you enjoyed it! Yeah some effects were a little inconsistent but I feel like I had to give it a pass on that front considering the presumably *tiny* budget… especially when other bits were really well done.

I actually think the strangest ‘effect’ is the representation on the poster for the film… it looks downright cheesy! I scrolled passed it when looking for something to watch (not knowing what it was) and actually laughed at how ‘in your face’ and naff it looked, thinking it was just one of those ten-a-penny bargain bin monster flicks :o more than meets the eye, thankfully!

If you liked it, I’d really recommend ‘When Evil Lurks’ as well, following on from the above convo :)

Death by Murder (1976)
Absolutely dire, soon as Peter Sellers appeared on-screen with racist Chinese makeup and un-funny wang penis jokes we knew the game was up.

Crackerjack.

This was recommended by a friend when I mentioned Ozzy comedy as I love Kenny and The Castle. Very much of it's time (2002) generally heartwarming, but not as many laughs as the other two I mentioned. I still think Blackball has the edge for lawn bowling comedy. 6/10

Devara, Part 1

I love RRR, so when I see a Telugu language epic I click the Telugu language epic. Staring Rama Rao Jr (who is one of the Rs that RRR got its name from) as two characters - a father and his son - it is gloriously, absurdly over-the-top without the touch of ironic intent that a Western cinema equivalent would feel the need to add. The tone is wildly inconsistent and it leaps from ultra-violence to basically a romcom to having a musical number with dizzying speed. Not up there with RRR, but I still enjoyed it a lot and unlike so many long films these days its three hour length didn't drag at all. It is the first of two parts, and the first ends on a massive cliff-hanger without resolving the plot points its been teasing to explain since the start, which gives it a slightly unsatisfying end until we get the second part in 2026, but still I recommend it to anyone who liked RRR.

8/10 - Gloriously over-the-top nonsense fun.

Alien Romulus - 6.5/10. Not as good as i hoped it would be, but no where near as bad as it could've been, i've certainly seen far worse Alien movies thats for sure, there were a couple of moments that fell well into cringe territory but on the whole it did the job & i enjoyed it.

vue Norwich Venom The Last Dance 4/5

More romping fun with Eddie and venom
mum and I watched venom 1 and 2 recently so we could watch the last dance, without going in blind: Venom 1 is a diamond in the rough, (9/10 a very enjoyable film, having you wonder is this film a comedy sometimes, sure it has it's highs and its lows, and venom two was definately not as good as venom 1, both film are great at making you feel for the symbiote

I have mixed feeling about last dance, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, although it was great to be with the lethal defender again, one interesting thing to note is that in part of the film (not a spoiler) is that Tom hardy is suited and booted, looking his best an a black suit, white fancy shirt, and shiny shoes, I think the director did this, just to play with how well Tom hardy would look as James Bond, he sure looked good, I'd be happy with Hardy as Bond, now

the plot was maybe just a little predictable, but it took its sweet time getting there with plenty of venom comedy in the meantime 4/5
bit odd watching these films after being a spiderman fan, all my life, but overall, this was a great take on venom, really good, and super funny at times, personally I advise watching them all

I can't think of any sequel that well-known and potentially cash-grabby that was Trainspotting 2. It's great seeing Danny Boyle indulge himself and it all works. Ewan Bremner is one of the best actors there is and when Spud tells Renton what a junkie would do with 4k, I absolutely believed him. Fandabidozze.

Paddington 3.

4 of us went to see it yesterday and we all enjoyed it. It borrows some of the themes from P1/2 and still has lots of mishaps, but it did seem slower-paced. P2 is still my favourite of the series because of the jail themes. I give P3 7 out of 10. Definitely one for the whole family again and should do well at the box office.

On a side note, I'll never forget that Paddington skit with the late Queen Elizabeth II about 3 years ago.

kate beckinsales black canary

5/10, I got the feeling they were trying to do an Mission impossible/bond type film where the agency turns against the movie lead and yada yada, kate's always hot but she had no expression or movement ability on her face, so you were left wondering wtf is going on in the movie.

If you got time to kill and just want to see expressionless fear and suspense from kates face, go for it.

terrifier 3

7/10

while not as good as the 1st, its better then the 2nd one imo. The special effects, gore and horror is there for anyone and much more improved then the first 2 movies.
Bit too much with the storyline imo, but there setting up many more in the series.

Don't eat or have a big meal before watching!

The Count of Monte-Cristo (2024)

Fantastic adaptation of the novel. Yes they changed and cut things out, but it was very well done and kept the spirit of the book.

9/10 (no Luis Guzman so it gets marked down) :D
